The crippling shortage of mealie meal in Kasama in Northern Province on Wednesday entered day two.
Only one outlet at Kasama Milling had stocks of the commodity which led to many people jostle to buy mealie meal.
Armed police had to be called in to control the masses after the situation almost degenerated into chaos.
Some residents interviewed said the situation is reminiscent of the Kaunda days when mealie meal shortages were the order of the day.
They said the shortages are uncalled for and appealed to Government to quickly address the situation.

ECL told us mealie meal was now 45Kwacha from the solar milling plants but now its like a ‘normal’ milling plant is the one producing mealie meal. Zambians what does it take for us to question those who rule over us to be factual. i believe the solar milling plants are on borrowed money that each one of us has to pay irrespective of one’s political inclination or lack of of it

People are taking advantage of the cheap mealie meal in kasama by buying in bulk and resale at double price where it’s stop expensive. Don’t worry that’s a good sign of positive feedback from solar initiative. We are installing them all over and price will stabilize and no more shortages soon.
