MARJORY Moyo, the police traffic officer who was knocked down by an unlicensed driver at a road checkpoint last Saturday was yesterday evacuated to South Africa for reconstructive surgery.

Ms Moyo, who was accompanied by her mother, Mervis Mumba, and Levy Mwanawasa General Hospital medical personnel, left on board a South African Airways (SAA) flight at 13:00 hours.

Ms Moyo was seen off by her father, Handson Moyo, Government officials, traffic officers and senior police officers at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (KKIA).

Speaking in an interview in Lusaka yesterday, Mr Moyo said he is still heart-broken after the incident in which his daughter was injured.

“When we received the news, we were heart-broken and we are still in shock. But we are grateful to Government, the people of Zambia and staff at Levy Mwanawasa General Hospital for the support,” he said.

Mr Moyo said that his daughter has been slowly recovering from the injuries sustained in the accident.

Ministry of Home Affairs spokesperson Moses Suwali said Government will enhance modern traffic policing in operations to prevent such incidents.

  1. “Government will enhance modern traffic policing in operations to prevent such incidents”.
The word there is modern, thanks. We cannot continue to have traffic officers trying to be brave by standing in front of a speeding vehicle just because they are police. They even have the balls to chase an offending vehicle in residential areas at high speed without thinking about the safety of innocent pedestrians. Not all people have fear of police.
In civilized/modern countries the cops just write a slip with the offense and fine on it and stick it on the vehicle without engaging in unnecessary confrontations with the drivers.

  2. What happened to MedicAir? These guys speciallise in medical evacuations such as this one. How on earth can you transport someone requiring surgery, on a hospital bed, using a commercial plane? Sub-standard and incoveniencing!

    • I almost ran over one on a highway…didnt see him or the checkpoint untill the last moment…they dont even bother to wear high visibility vests!!

    • @minish, you are very right, in fact these police officers from PHI/Bennie Mwiinga are thieves, they stole from my car after abandoning it at mashilands. I tried to complain but to no avail. In fact that lady who was knocked down was among the guys in question. Am happy that she has been punished, the rest are yet to follow

  3. Whoever has driven on Zambian roads should agree that the police officer needs to be taught a lesson. It is unfortunate that the driver in question was unlicensed but in most cases the police will stop at nothing to find faults with motorist in exchange for bribes. I once spend a weekend locked up just because I did not have money to bribe them. Let us kill a few more so that the government can wake up.

    • @Srutinizerer you have never driven on Zambia roads. These police are heartless and deserve what has happened to them. I am sure Mr Moyo never questioned her daughter the money she was giving him before the incident. These people are day light thieves on the roads.

  4. She’s a poor victim of poor policing practices. She won’t be the last victim for as long as cops remain hooked to receiving nichekeleko from rotten drivers at the expense of enforcing law and order. All day long defective vehicles and nutty drivers slip past police roadblocks with the nod of traffic officers for a few kwachas, and hence the road anarchy that now comes to haunt even the cops themselves!!

  5. I still have a alot of questions about the accident, what i have noticed is that every time traffic police mount these ATMs, they are usually 3 to 5 office on the scene, but when i had a look on the video circulating on social media, this officer was so helpless, i didn’t see any of her colleagues help her at the accident scene, all i saw was civilians drivers and pedestrians help her help onto a Canter truck and taken to the hospital, where was her fellow officers? Only to show up when evacuating her to south Africa.

  6. I wish u a quick recovery, and now this is for RTSA and Z P traffic section: the blood of the lady is in your hands because of your unquenchable thirst for nichekeleko!! You even walk with heads high in your camps yet you’re have been proven to be the most corrupt and sleaziest Govt dept.

  7. In this day and age you still have police checkpoints to fatten these corrupt officers wallets…instead of computerising the motor traffic database.
You happy to waste taxpayers on hideously overpriced roads yet neglecting health.

  8. Useless PF. Still rushing people to South Africa. We need to submit names of PF leaders and Lungu’s to the international criminal court and soon we will arrest them when they try to go to South Africa or India for treatment.

  9. If the cops were doing their job properly, this should not have happened. The problem is they only go pa road block for the cash. If they ask questions, it is to find fault so that they can levy you something. They never write receipts. Nowadays, they are even given revenue targets and everyone is aware; from OIC right up the PIG (Police Inspector General).

  10. The same scenario happened in Kitwe at 16ft bridge were a lady traffic police officer lost her life 4 to five years ago. She was left to die on her own with three officer friends bolted and the light truck canter which bushed her overturn two times but the driver survived.
