GOVERNMENT says the new amendments to the constitution will empower women in the country and will eliminate all forms of discrimination.

Speaking yesterday during the Commemoration of International Women’s Day at Choma Stadium Commerce Trade and Industry Minister Margaret Mwanakatwe said amendments to the constitution had created an enabling environment for women participation as it has incorporated gender as a fundamental value.

MS Mwanakatwe who was the guest of honour said one of the provisions of the constitution was to create a Gender Equality Commission which would put in place mechanism for monitoring, investigating, researching, educating, lobbying, advising and reporting on issues of gender equity and equality.

“One of the provision of the constitution is the deliberate strengthening of the institutional capacity to deal with gender issues by creating the gender Equality Commission,” Ms Mwanakatwe said.

She said government was determined to ensure the success of the commission once it was established.

Southern Province Minister Nathaniel Mubukwanu expressed disappointment at the failure by opposition political parties to attend the event.

Mr Mubukwanu wondered why the opposition political parties shunned the event when the Women’s Day was for all the women in the country.

“ Women’s Day is for all of you there’s no reason why certain faces should be missing we have only PF here today (yesterday) we don’t want women to be dancing at political events when they can make the most of this event on their day,” he said.

Choma District Commissioner Sheena Muleya commended the organising committee for hosting such a colourful event.

The women’s day was celebrated differently as the women organisations, government departments, Ministries, business houses and various Non-Government Organisations exhibited some of their services and products that saw Ministry of General Education emerge overall winner following a colourful exhibition.

The rest of the winners are Finance Bank that got the second position while National Construction Council (NCC) took up the third position while Zambia Police were fourth.

This year’s women’s day was being commemorated under the theme planet 50-50 by 2030: Step it up for gender equality.’

  1. Opposition parties in Zambia are unprofessional, non-representative of the people of Zambia. The fight is for them to get power if they can’t they spread falseness and try to bring down democratically elected gov’t.

Their activities are treasonous and unZambian. Like little school kids they are sullen and act out in anger.
