Zesco seek critical home win over Horoya

Zesco coach George Lwandamina is positive about a home win in Saturday’s 2016 CAF Champions League match against Horoya of Guinea at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.

The Zambian champions are seeking a vital home win in their first round, first leg match to take into the final leg on March 20 in Conakry.

“Every coach trains the team to win. So I don’t know why you want me to lose. We have to play and we will play whatever result will come that will be what will be there,” Lwandamina said.

Horoya will present Zesco with its first big test in this years competition after the hosts sailed through 3-0 on aggregate from the preliminary round with victory over newcomers Al Ghazala of South Sudan.

And the visitors too are unbeaten in the competition following a 4-0 home win over AS Douanes of Senegal in the last round to advance by the same aggregate scoreline.

The pressure is very much on Zesco who have not eliminated West African opposition in three outings since the 2009 Champions League when they beat Africasport of Cote d’Ivoire and Djoliba of Senegal on their way to a debut group stage appearance in continental competition by a Zambian club.

Meanwhile, Zanaco kickoff their continental campaign today when they make their debut trip to Zimbabwe to play Harare City.

Zanaco enjoyed a bye from the preliminary round while Harare City picked up back to back 3-2 and 3-1 home and away wins over Adema of Madagascar in the preliminary round.

The two teams will be in the return leg derby on March 19 at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka.
