CARITAS Chipata has advised President Edgar Lungu against adopting some of the current serving Members of Parliament (MPs) who recently endorsed his candidature in the August 11th general elections.
Caritas Chipata Good Governance Programmes Coordinator John Zulu said in a statement yesterday that Caritas Chipata was shocked to see a number of failed MMD MPs parading themselves at a Patriotic Front (PF) rally held in Chipata giving indications that they were popular in their respective constituencies and pledging support for President Lungu in this year’s elections whilst not.
“The opposite is the truth, most of the MMD MPs in Eastern Province especially from among those who paraded themselves have no support to offer to Edgar Lungu but instead they actually want support from Edgar Lungu in order for them to bounce back in Parliament,”Mr Zulu said.
He said people in most constituencies in the province were not happy with most current sitting MPs adding that few deserve re- election into Parliament.
He said some MPs who have lost popularity want to ride in the name of President Lungu to get re-elected into parliament during the general elections.
Mr Zulu said this was a timely warning to all political parties who want to recycle Parliamentary candidates to consult widely on the grassroots before they finally adopt candidates.
“Political Parties must put in place adoption processes that give equal opportunity to all aspiring candidates and do not allow corruption to take charge of the adoption processes.
Some of the current MPs have nothing to talk about apart from Constituency Development Fund (CDF) projects that are a sign of a failed MP,”he said.
He challenged those who want to be re-elected to tell the people what they have achieved during their five year tenure in office.
He said some MPS had even failed to visits their constituencies to conduct assessment of developmental needs of the constituency with stakeholders in the constituency?

PF is not the only party that might want to adopt these other failed MPs from other parties. Leaders should be careful on this one, you just can’t override someone’s membership record with someone’s popularity record.

ANYWAY, MAKING A PRONOUNCEMENT THAT ONE OR A GROUP OF PEOPLE SUPPORT THE RULING OR ANY OTHER PARTY DOES NOT NECESSARILY MEAN A QUALIFICATION FOR ADOPTION. THE QUALIFICATION FOR ANY INDIVIDUAL SHOULD BE BASED ON WHAT THEY HAVE ACCOMPLISHED ON THE GROUND FOR THE INTEREST OF THE CONSTITUENCY OR COUNCIL. ANNOUNCING THEIR SUPPORT FOR MEANS AND IT SHOULD MEAN THAT THEY ARE SAYING THEY WILL VOTE FOR THAT PARTY DURING ELECTIONS.
