Government to install 12 000 computers in schools across Zambia

Some of the computers handed over to Namuseba Primary School in Monze District today by Zambia National Building Society (ZNBS) in a bid to complement government’s efforts to spearhead Information, communication and Technology (ICTs) learning in schools.
GOVERNMENT has set aside over K100 million to procure and install 12,000 desktop computers in schools across Zambia.

And the Ministry of General Education says it is pleased with the positive results achieved from teaching grade ones in local languages in line with the revised curriculum.

Ministry of General Education spokesperson Hillary Chipango said the procurement of computers is meant to enhance the management of computer studies examinations to avert what happened last year when some schools had no computers.

Mr Chipango said in response to a query yesterday that Government has already signed contracts worth K54 million with three suppliers of computers for the supply and installation of 6,000 desktop computers.

“Half are inbuilt with computer graphics software and will come with art demonstration CDs and 16GB storage discs,” he said.

  1. HOPEFULLY THEY WILL INSTALL ELECTRICITY AT ALL RURAL SCHOOLS SO THEY CAN USE THE COMPUTERS !!!!!!!!! OR IS IT ELECTION TALK AGAIN

    • All you need is 4 solar panels for a computer room …but this is too much for these empty tins that want a cut in every deal as evidenced by the above estimates.

  2. I see scandal here if the specifications are what I am reading into the usual vague reporting by LT. Listen, rural schools need to get the state of the art. Let’s do something right. I know some know-it all will talk about lack of amenities in rural areas but that is exactly it. By now solar energy should have invaded the rural folk and schools. So let’s get better specs (16GB in the 21st Century when storage is so darn cheap!???).

  3. Computers is a must-have these days. So thats a good move in principle. Though I am not sure K9,000 per computer is a good contract even if it includes installation. Computers are plug-and-play these days.

Now, with load shedding etc… how is it going to be? UPS can only go so far, and is not a substitute to mains supply. There is no mention of solar panels and inverters etc..
…AND it is not a good idea to show an old photo of computers in this article because it raises a lot of alarm bells. The old screens shown use a lot of power (watts). AND is that a slot for a floppy disk in the processor in the middle?

  4. “Half are inbuilt with computer graphics software and will come with art demonstration CDs and 16GB storage discs,” Education spokesperson Hillary Chipango.

Surely what year is this? This spokesperson is talking of specifications of obsolete computers that are 15 years old…yet they are quoting 2016 prices for them. This is what happens when we deal with middle- men.
I bet you some minister is rubbing their hands as his proxy company will be awarded this contract to supply these PCs.

  5. Most of those have been recycled, assembled with incompatible software by look of them. But for basic levels….maybe.

Anyway, it’s good to know we are able to provide for future cyber bullies …among other skills they’ll learn! What…no internet …?!

  6. These computers were picked from recycling pits in UK. They are not fit for any purpose BUT to be crushed and melting a bit of gold in the components. Please Zambia be serious with education.
