Zamtel Managing Director Mupanga Mwanakatwe says the power deficit has negatively impacted on the company’s performance.

Dr. Mwanakatwe says the company does not have back up power for most of its sites in remote areas.

He has also observed that shocks in the local and global economies have seen dwindling purchasing power.

Dr. Mwanakatwe is however, optimistic that business will pick up as the economy recovers.

He was speaking during a signing ceremony with Huawei Electronics Zambia Limited of a joint corporate social responsibility program where Zamtel has set aside 2-million kwacha to be spent over 2 years while the ICT Company is putting in 2-hundred thousand

Dr. Mwanakatwe has revealed that the program will involve the drilling of 100 boreholes in all the 10 provinces as part of improving access to clean water as well as supporting tertiary education.

And Huawei Zambia Managing Director Fan Wen said student education is key to the development of society.

Meanwhile, Mr. Fan has observed that Zambia’s mobile penetration has remained low around 70 percent compared to other countries in the region like South Africa with over 110 percent.

He has observed that infrastructure in terms of internet penetration has also remained low a situation he says is a potential area for further investments.

    • Most of these government institutions in Zambia are run by people who have no clue on how to run a business. They`re appointed based on political and ethnic cronyism.

    • Suffice to say Mupanga is a wrong person to drive embattled Zamtel from a quagmire. He doesn’t have what it takes to launch Zamtel in the eco-system. Post election, in the interest of Zambia we should recommend to President Lungu and the Board to let Mupanga go. What has he got to show when Zamtel should have been the heartbeat of smart cities evolution in Zambia? President Sata errored in risking Zamtel with an I’ll qualified soul.

    • @ 1.1. and 1.2…what do you expect when cadres have taken over everything in Zambia. This is the insanity that HH must root out, and allow trained professionals to run organisations to make them competitive..at the moment, Zamtel is such a libaility to every tax payer, just like ZESCO is!

    • Didn’t Lungu and his PFoolish Cabinet insist that the powercuts would have no impact on the economy? So what is Mupanga complaining about?

    • Sata is the cause of all this: Mupanga at Zamtel, the powercuts, the nationalisation of Zamtel, the total incompetence in PF.

  1. How this underperforming MD is still in the job is beggar’s belief…technically speaking this firm has been sold to the Chines who are in control of systems…imagine what a secruity flaw that is.
How can you not run a mobile company profitably with such monopoly of fiberoptic broadband and landlines.

  2. This is the man HEECL should replace immediately he forms his new government as this man is one of the most incompetent and visonless buffoon. Can you imagine from last year August to date Zamtel has failed to procure modems for Internet connection and if you want to migrate to Zamtel from say Iconnect, you buy modems from Zamtel workers who are buying them from SA. Just wonder why this mangwamu continues to occupy that office as he has destroyed the company.

    • Only a mangwamu appoints another mangwamu and is happy with it because he does not recognise the uselessness and incompetence of his mangwamu. Lungu is such a useless loser. He should have fired Chikwanda and Mwanakatwe a long time ago but he does not recognise the uselessness of these mangwamus.

  3. There is one Chief Financial Officer at ZAMTEL called Nchimunya who has a history of stealing. He has made sure that ZAMTEL does not get financing using all underhand methods including stealing and distorting the balance sheet of ZAMTEL. The only problem Mupanga has s the heart for individuals he MUST fire this little sex maniac. He stole in Airtel through many double invoicing and was the reason he was transferred to Siera Leon. Mupanga brought him back thinking this was the guy.

  4. “…Mupanga Mwanakatwe says the power deficit has negatively impacted on the company’s performance.
THIS IS A LIE. ZAMTEL HAS EVER BEEN RUN POORLY EVER SINCE INDEPENDENCE OF ZAMBIA.
“the company does not have back up power for most of its sites in remote areas”. AND YOU THINK IT’S THE CONSUMERS’ FAULTY FOR LACK CONTINGENCY PLANNING OR FUTURE ANTICIPATION?
“Meanwhile, Mr. Fan has observed that Zambia’s mobile penetration has remained low around 70 percent compared to other countries in the region like South Africa with over 110 percent.” THIS IS SIMPLY, BECAUSE OF THE WAY ZAMTEL HAS BEEN RUN SINCE INDEPENDENCE. THE COME UP TO NOW DO NOT CONSIDER LAYING INFRASTRUCTURE AS ESSENTIAL FOR ANY FUTURE EXPANSION PROGRAMS. TAKE FOR INSTANCE THE INTERNET IN ZAMBIA…

  5. S AFRICA, BOTSWANA AND ZIMBABWE HAVE INTERNET NOT ONLY IN BUSINESS OFFICES BUT ALSO IN DOMESTIC HOMES SIMPLY BECAUSE EVEN BEFORE THE INTERNET CAME, OF THESE COUNTRIES ALREADY HAD MOST OF THEIR POPULATIONS HOUSE LAND PHONES IN THEIR HOUSES WHICH IS JUST AN AUTOMATIC INFRASTRUCTURE FOR THE INTERNET. ALL THEY HAD TO DO IS JUST IMPROVE A LITTLE ON WHAT THEY ALREADY HAD BY INTEGRATING THE TRANSPORTATION OF (PHONE SIGNALS) VOICE, TEXT, VIDEO, PICTURE SIGNALS ON ONE CARRIAGE VEHICLE AND LATER ON MAKING IT BROADBAND- MEANING ONE DID NOT NEED TO WAIT FOR HIS SISTER TO FINISH CHATTING WITH HER BOY FRIEND IN ORDER TO CONTINUE WITH HIS/HER ACADEMIC RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET. SHE CAN TALK FOREVER AND YOU CAN GO ON WITH YOUR RESEARCH.

  6. I have always said that Zamtel foolishly and imprudently spent too much money in Marketing… Billboards all over the place sponsoring all sorts of silly events … Millions were spent at the expense of investing in optimising their Network. Why Should Mupanga cry now ?? He somehow went for the “old” Marketing strategies employed by Muhanga in which he made a lot of money in kick backs…. its really a shame and thats the reality with Zamtel

  7. IT USED TO BE AND STILL IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO GET A LANDLINE FROM ZAMTEL (BY THEN POSTS AND TELECOMMUNICATION). THIS IS SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY DO NOT THEY DO NOT DEVELOP AND EXPAND THE INFRASTRUCT AND THINK FORWARD. IF THEY DO, IT WILL JUST BE ALONG THE LINE OF RAIL LEAVING THE LARGEST POPULATION OF ZAMBIA WITH NO LAND PHONES. WE HAVE ALWAYS HAD THICK-HEADED COEs WHO HAVE ALWAY BEEN THINKING THAT A PHONE IS FOR APAMWAMBA MUMA YARD (RICH PEOPLE IN LOW DENSITY AREAS OR SUBURBS). I WAS SHOCKED TO FIND PHONES IN TYPICAL VILLAGES IN BOTSWANA. EVEN IN FORESTS/JUNGLES FOR HELP. i COULDN’T BELIEVE HOW BEHIND ZAMBIA WAS IN THIS CONTEXT.

  8. BESIDES, MOST TELECOMMUNICATION COMPANIES IN THE WORLD USE THEIR ENGINEERS IN THE ENGINEERING DIVISION TO DESIGN AND IMPLEMENT TELEPHONES AND OTHER COMMUNICATIONS GADGETS. BT IN THE UK DOES IT. WHY CAN’T ZAMTEL SMELL AN OPPORTUNITY TO START DESIGNING AND MANUFACTURING AT LEAST LAND PHONES TO CREATE A BROAD INFRASTRUCTURE FOR INTERNET CONNECTIVITY IN DOMESTIC HOMES, RATHER, THAN PEOPLE DONGOS EVERYWHERE. LAND PHONES HAVE NEVER BEEN A LUXURY IN EVEN OTHER AFRICAN COUNTRIES SUCH AS MENTIONED ABOVE. SO BA DR MWANAKATWE, USE YOUR BRAINS AND YOUR ENGINEERS TO CREATE INFRASTRUCTURE, LANDLINES IN HOMES FOR BROAD CUSTOMER BASE AND USE MFEZs TO DESIGN AND MANUFACTURE STARTING WITH LAND PHONES HARDWARE.
