BEWARE OF UPND ‘TENDERPRENEURS AND CROOKS,’ THE POST WARNS
Barely four months ago on 29th January 2016, many Zambian readers were greeted with a shocking headline and story in the Post Newspaper regarding the opposition UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema commonly known as HH. The headline was shocking because it read: “HH regrets insulting The Post,” and the reason for that is a matter of public knowledge to any politically savvy Zambian—HH and Post publisher Fred M’membe were not exactly cut from the same piece of cloth and were the most unlikely allies under any given circumstances.
Both gentlemen historically resented each other with a passion to an extent that one could never get to level of apologizing to the other even if it meant a loss of life was eminent. The reason for the love-hate relationship is probably a matter for another day’s discussion because today a new page has opened in the lives of the two gentleman yet again.
If a scathing editorial in the tabloid today (24th May 2016) is anything to go by, the love affair between The Post and HH has either come to an end or is nearing a bitter end soon.
But before getting to today’s comment, a recap on HH’s olive branch three months ago that left a bitter taste in the mouths of many that support him read:
“The People of Zambia must give The Post Newspaper unconditional support and appreciation because the job that they are doing for everybody is too important to be trivialised by political differences,” Hichilema said.
The opposition leader boot-licked on like a whining puppy seeking attention,
“We (HH and UPND) have obviously misunderstood them in the past and attacked them unnecessarily and this is regrettable.”
The eulogy continued:
“We (HH) want to live that in the past. We need to open a new page, all of us people of Zambia, UPND included and myself. We need to look forward with The Post.”
“What is important now is to give The Post our unconditional support, and personally, I (HH) will visit the newspaper with my colleagues when we return to Lusaka to give our friends the solidarity they deserve from all of us.”
For those that know not the love hate history of the newspaper and the opposition party, here is a bit of background, before the truce, the tabloid had called HHs party a tribal Bantustan party that had a regional colour while its leader HH had even been roasted for one graft allegation or another.
Hakainde had also called the newspaper publisher an arrogant man that sometimes thought he was a literally a young brother of Jesus Christ. The fights, the hate, the blood, the accusations and counter accusations continued and the rest of the nation stood by and watched wondering who would go down first.
Today, however, the two partners appear to have fallen back to their bad ways with the tabloid striking first blood and calling HH and his party some unpalatable terms such as “Dodgy” and “Tenderpreneurs” which normally would be left for bitter enemies and not partners.
The tabloid seems to have suddenly realized that contrary to chanting slogans of ‘ability for economic management and graft fight’, the UPND is thin on commitment because they are just an ordinary bunch of Tenderpreneurs and crooks. A new term that may soon enter the Zambian day to day lingua franca like Sonta epo wabomba popularized by President Edgar Lungu.
The tabloid thinks HH and his cohorts are nothing but Dodgy Tenderpreneurs masquerading as businessmen, they are inconsistent and cannot be trusted because of the following reasons:
- The UPND is dominated by elements that were running business in MMD and PF
- UPND is incapable of talking about corruption and least of all fight it because its members are corrupt
- HH denounced corruption of RB in 2009 but promised to embrace RB if he assumed office
- New UPND stalwart heavily defended PF on corruption but today he accuses the PF of corruption forcing The Post to ask: “what nonsense is this (Guy Scott) what hypocrisy is this?
Perhaps one of the greatest consternation for the tabloid is the observation that the UPND today is not the UPND of yesteryear but one full of “crooks” interested only in enriching themselves if they assumed power through tenders.
The will to win power according to the tabloid is simply that of greed and it is their “insubstantial glue” these Tenderpreneurs. The UPND does not mean well for Zambia says the tabloid.
The tabloid says because of the colour of tenderpreneurs, UPND has the propensity of becoming worse in government than any other party.
The above concerns are not being raised by the ruling PF but by the UPNDs strongest ally and biggest news supporter, The Post newspaper in its 24th January 2016 of page 20.
So if the newspaper that chose three months ago to fully support HH and his party against all odds has finally seen through the parties entrenched corruption, what must Zambia voters do?
They must hid The Post advice and push HHs political career into oblivion because he cannot be trusted and neither can Guy Scott whom the newspaper has called nonsensical and hypocritical.
Politics must perhaps be left to tested leaders like Edgar Lungu who in a year has shown he can make tough economic decisions and unite a country.
Beware of Tenderpreneurs and crooks in UPND disguised as economic managers and politicians. Heed The Post warning or live to regret supporting them.

It is actually amazing that the Post even pretended to support HH/UPND. Feel sorry for Hakainde with his desperation to win by any means necessary—even getting into bed with his sworn enemies like M’membe did seem to matter to him.
Fortunately, many Zambians are able to see through the “facade” that the “Dodgy” and “Tenderpreneurs” gathering in UPND really are. It is surprising it has taken Newspapers such as the Post this long to figure this one out!

Just tell Fred Mmembe to tell us how he acquired the 100 trucks and the tender to transport copper to Namibia. ask him how he frustrated Prof Chirwa in his attempt to revamp ZRL and tackle over its rightful business of transporting Copper by rail and not by road which damages the roads. Let him tell us how his friend Wynter Kabimba got oil importation tenders for his company with Michael Sata under Ilunda Chalo.
Actually Fred Mmembe is sitting between a hard place and a rock i.e. between Edgar Lungu and HH. He is in a dilemma and doesn’t know who to really back. He knows it won’t be easy going forward under Edgar lungu but also he doesn’t trust HH to provide him the leeway to run government like he did under Sata. In his confusion he ends up supporting Wynter’s socialism nonsense.
Comment:While Fred Mmembe and Wynter Kabimba are pushing for socialism, Venezuela is in deep trouble economically because of socialism. There is no sugar, no power, no soap, etc. They have what we had toward the last days of unip in the 80s- long cues for commodities. Under a socialist government, Venezuela has privatised industries and as usual as in every socialist state, they have appointed loyalists to run the nationalised industries which have now been run down. Socialism is not realistic. It is an ideal ideology for an ideal environment I.e. heaven. And then Fred and Wynter are dangling this failed ideology knowing that Zambians generally are dull and will accept any sh@t packaged nicely.
This analysis is devoid of deep thought. Of course its from a cadre. What the post was telling us is politicians left to their ways are the same. Let’s not trust in the goodness of people but build on strong institutions. Even Obama (or the Pope) under our current institutions will be a thief. ECL in his1.5 years in statehouse has only mentioned the word corruption once, he’s acted on none. UPND doesn’t pretend to be humble. We know their human weaknesses. Its up to us to create a strong nation .
Reporting on the report of other people’s works is not news. We read all that in the Post, so why is LT repeating Mmembe’s works???

One can understand Mmembe’s frustration at the lack of traction of his friend Wynter’s Rainbow Party. However, socialism has no future in Zambia or anywhere in the world. Venezuela is reeling under its own failed socialist experiment. Cuba has failed under socialism and has to be bailed out by USA. Fred himself is a tenderpreneur who benefited from PF government support for his transport business and advertising business in his newspaper! I am not a fan of the Post but I fully support Fred Mmembe’s editorial of 24th May 2016. Tenderpreneurs and crooks have regrouped in UPND. These are very greedy and selfish individuals who want to grab each and every lucrative tender from Govt leaving no chance to other Zambians. They would want to recoup every ngwee they are selfishly dishing out in their quest to ‘buy off’ unsuspecting vulnerable Zambians’ votes. For balanced debate, the writer should have highlighted what The Post newspapers and Fred M’membe are saying about Edgar Lungu… then we can compare fairly. Otherwise as neutral observers we could only assume bias.

I did not imagine once that Mmembe could be bought, I have not read the editorial myself but reading from the comments, it is clear that Mmembe has become a PF cadre all of a sudden. He has been bought. Now Lungu will sit and relax , he has done his job, it will be HH versus the Post. Mmembe will not face anymore persecution from PF Government.

By the way if you read the Post regularly it is not the first time that Mmembe has gone to town on HH. A few weeks ago Mmembe mocked HH for being bankrupt morally and ideologically which again is a fact. According to Mmembe in that editorial voting for HH would be the same as jumping from the frying pan into the fire. Does that sound like Edgar has bought Mmembe? NO! So just enjoy the unholy alliance with HHs newly found girlfriend Mmembe and leave our innocent Edgar out of your misery, its the price that all you crooks pay.
This has been our concern as longtime UPND members. Our Party has been hijacked and HH is looking on. If Sata were to awaken and join a UPND Rally today, he would think HH has defected to UPND! We condemned Mulenga Satas sudden wealth, GBMs donination of almost all Tenders at ZESCO and Ministry of Defence. We rose up to support BY Mwila when GBM denied his evacuation by refusing landing rights to an Air Ambulance etc etc. The UPND HH has now is not what Mazoka left. HH we need our party back !!

When Sata appointed Judge Ngoma as Security Manager at ZESCO we all condemnef this ‘thug’ but on whose security detail is Judge Ngoma now ? I wont say anything on Ruth Mbandu’s murder coz we commented on it but we dare not raise the issue as UPND coz HH is dining with the enemy ! I dont see us winning Aug 11 coz its like PF competing against PF. What corruption will we fight when GBM who bulldozed his way to any Defence or ZESCO contract is almost becoming our Vice President. The bottomline of the Post editorial is in the last sentence: A call for HH to start addressing corruption as a campaign message as well as manage those joining him when he forms government. Full stop. The rest is Just Mmembe thesis.

I have always said, HH has never been in government voting for him would be a mistake. Mmembe knows this and before HH could even prepare for his speech, Mmembe, turns round 360 degrees reminding Zambian to be ware of black mamba.
