UPND President Hakainde Hichilema says President Lungu’s claims that the economy is on the upswing do not bear any truth to what the people know to be true .
In a statement Mr Hichilema wondered where the President was drawing his comments from when people were suffering due to the economic mismanagement.
He described as insulting the claims that the country is recovering economically as the challenges faced by the people are visible.
“Lungu’s comments come as the Kwacha continues weakening again to more than K10.50 to the dollar as a result of a failing economy. While President Lungu claims the economy is on an upswing, the banks and experts are telling a different story. Where are the signs of recovery and who should Zambians believe?
“This is the same President Lungu who promised to create 500,000 jobs before the end of 2016 but so far has only been presiding over job losses in all sectors. Even in the pro-government Times of Zambia for today, the PF Government have placed a teaser for an advert from the Ministry of Education inviting qualified candidates to apply as teachers when those from the previous round of applications are yet to be deployed.
“President Lungu’s Government announced the recruitment of 5,000 teachers in January 2015, which were to be selected in August 2015 and deployed in September 2015 but in June 2016 they are pretending like this never happened,” he said
He added “These lies are an insult and mockery to those who are jobless, especially the youths. We have the same situation in other sectors, including the military, where Government has called for applications for officers to try and create the illusion of jobs but they never follow.”
Mr Hichilema further said the only economy that is growing at a super fast rate in Zambia today is President Lungu’s personal pockets.
“Meanwhile, the Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection has shown another monthly increase in the cost of living, from K4,293.95 in April to K4,817.41 in May. Our people in townships live on between K500 and K2,500. President Lungu should think again before he makes such claims.
“It could be said that the only economy that is growing at a super fast rate in Zambia today is President Lungu’s personal pockets, which has abnormally increased from the January 2015 election declaration to a whooping K23.7 million as per the recent declaration of his assets,” he said.
