UPND President Hakainde Hichilema says it is rude for anyone to question his decision to pick his vice president for administration Geoffrey Mwamba as his running mate.
Mr. Hichilema says as party president it is his right to chose who should be his running mate.
In an interview with QFM by telephone from Northern Province where he is campaigning, Mr. Hichilema it is unfair for people to continue questioning his choice for running mate when no one is talking about other political parties.
He has wondered why people are not questioning President Edgar Lungu’s choice for running mate vice president Inonge Wina.
Mr. Hichilema has reiterated that party vice president for political affairs Canisius Banda who some people expected to be his running mate still has value to the UPND.
He however, stated that he has not spoken to Dr. Banda over his decision not to be part of UPND campaign team that currently on the campaign trail in Eastern province.
Meanwhile, UPND Vice President for Politics Dr. Canisius Banda refuted claims suggesting that he withdrew from the party’s Eastern Province campaign tour led by former vice president Guy Scott and former Chongwe Member of Parliament Sylvia Masebo because he is bitter for being overlooked as presidential running mate.
Dr. Banda told QFM via telephone that such claims were cheap propaganda which should not be taken seriously.
Dr. Banda said that he harbors no ill feeling after UPND President Hakainde Hichilema picked his Vice President for Administration Geoffrey Mwamba as his running mate.
Dr. Banda said that his absence from Eastern province campaign team has nothing to do with him being overlooked as a presidential running mate, but that something personal came up and he decided to remain and attend to those matters.
HH the fact that people are questioning you, means that there could be something terribly wrong with your decision making and that you lack the wisdom of listening…
Whichever way, HH made a self-inflicting pain.
He has dribbled himself from continuing with his political career.
HH’s political career has been deeply challenged, because after losing in August 2016 he will be forced to retire from active politics by the ‘guys’ or is he going to accept to be a mere UPND member, or at least a member of the NEC?
Let us assume that in the unlikely even he won the election (forgive me for assuming the impossible), GBM would be a thorn in HH’s flesh – take it or leave it. GBM would have a constitutional mandate just like HH, and HH will have no powers to fire him. Those who know GBM will tell you, that HH’s would not be easy.
You may not like what I have said but that matters little the point is that, whichever way, HH’s career has taken a self-inflicted challenge because of greed – the hunger and thirsty for State House.
HH made a wise choice that’s why people are talking about HH and not ECL or FDD. Ya, they are scared. Politics is about numbers and strategies and this one is working wonders on the ground where it matters. This time it’s South (HH)and North (GBM)Vs East (ECL) and West (IW). Let’s wait and see. Unfortunately, Guy Scott is using the young men Miles Sampa and Mulenga Sata to advance his agenda of revenging on Lungu. The more I think about it the more I am convinced that he is behind their defection! He is trying by all means to remain relevant to the political scene!
On the contrary, the questioning is a vote of confidence that he is more likely becoming the next president. So reality check on the decision.

People have a right to question the selection of public servants, especially someone who will be a heartbeat away from the presidency. Zambians have a right to make sure the right people are put in public offices. Thus, we have a right to raise concerns if there are any. And it’s up to you to satisfy us that your selection is what’s best for Zambia. Remember, he will not just be “your” vice president, but “every” Zambian’s vice president. So we have a stake in it, and thus we should have a say. Labeling people’s questioning of your choice for a “public servant” as “rude,” smacks of dictatorship. Last time I checked, we’re have democracy in Zambia and thus we have a say in what happens to our beloved country. That’s how democracy works.

Perhaps ‘rude'</ is probably not the right word, especially if people are questioning the decision. People have the right to question who their potential veep is and eventually their potential president.
They should have used the opportunity to explain why GBM and their ticket is good for the country. They should have taken advantage of the attention to explain why they are better and what they will do for the country.

It now looks like Zambia is for sale. GBM who has money can buy his way to the UPND RM and eventually the Presidency. Banda and all other UPND long serving members dont have the money so they cant be running mate even if they have the qualities to be president. How can a man who is months old in any party overtake those who have been in the party for years. Are we the voters going to sell our country?
You are very right.. What people are forgetting is that a VP in the new constitution is a president in waiting…. The moment people will stop thinking on party lines, the better for this country. Until then, we will remain undeveloped. People need to question the actions of these leaders, not worship them be it HH or ECL.
