The Association of Vendors and Marketeers have called on UPND Leader Hakainde Hichilema to apologies to the Zambian people for allegedly mismanaging the privatization process before he talks of fixing the country’s economy.
Association President Abel Chikwa says it is inhuman for Mr Hichilema to talk about fixing Zambia’s economy today when he allegedly failed to heal an ailing economy during the privatization process.
Mr Chikwa in a telephone interview with ZNBC News in Kitwe charged that majority of the people in the informal sector are ex miners who were retrenched during the privatization process championed by Mr Hichilema.
He has noted that the President Edgar Lungu and PF government have designed a number of interventions for the informal sector and the economy in general to flourish.
He wondered what measures the UPND leader will put in place to fix the economy when the economic policies put in by the PF government are already bearing fruit as evidenced by the number of investments recorded in the mining and other sectors of the economy.
But UPND Spokesperson Charles Kakoma says the opposition political party is tired with unsubstantiated accusations that Mr. Hichilema mismanaged the privatization process.
He said to the contrary, Mr. Hichilema has the ability to transform the economy and better the living standards of the people.
Mr. Kakoma, however, said if voted into office Mr Hichilema will give traders across the country interest free loans to boost their businesses and grow the economy.
Mr. Kakoma further says loans that marketeers are being given by the PF administration under the presidential initiative fund will be scrapped off if Mr. Hichilema forms Government.
He said the marketeers will instead be given loans to empower them, without any condition of paying pack.

This is a tired story. If HH committed a crime during the privatization process why not sue him in a court of law? The Zambian govt who were the owners of the mines and the Zambia Privatization Agency should sue HH urgently and disqualify him from the Presidential election race. Lungu should do this if he thinks HH has a case to answer. What crime did HH commit during the privatization of the mines which is more than 20 years ago?

Folks: There was a government responsible for privatization, and no one talks about the fact. If anyone got rich including those who bought houses as seating tenants, and many more, a marketeers would certainly not understand. The executives at Privatization Agency were, Mr Francis Kaunda, Mr Valentine Chitalu, and many more who no one talks about. If anything HH bought what MMD folks and their appointees at the Agency did not want to buy, eg farm land. Ask the folks who signed off on those sales, Grant & Thronton’s job was to evaluate those assets and not sale them. And the owners or managers of the assets were at liberty to agree or disagree with a contractor hired to perform that exercise on their behalf!
There are many others like HH but no one pursues them because they are not seeking public office and are not boastful. Because of that, people including me do not name them at all. We just say spilt milk.
