Nevers Mumba condemns closure of Post Newspapers

MMD leader Nevers Mumba says the closure of the Post Newspapers represents one of the darkest days in the history of Zambia’s democracy.

Dr Mumba said the intolerance, intimidation, and victimisation facing the opposition parties, has now been turned onto the media.

He said these acts represent the last kicks of a dying horse and only serve to condemn the already failed, and soon to be removed rule of an intolerant regime.

Dr Mumba has since demanded the immediate reopening of the Post newspapers and an immediate negotiation be arranged.

“The government itself owes contractors, food suppliers, stationery suppliers, pensioners, utility companies, and civil servants and nobody, nobody, has shut them down,” Dr Mumba said.

He has also called on all Zambians to join the fight to save the free Media, and the Post in particular.

“In a week when we were just commemorating the 5th memorial of Late President and our First Party President, Dr. Frederick J T Chiluba, it is unacceptable that we can have a crop of leaders that are hell bent on reversing the many gains this man, and we as the MMD, fought for such as Democracy, the rule of law and the respect for all fundamental freedoms, and instead, start to run a banana Republic,” Dr Mumba said.

And MISA Zambia says it is closely monitoring the situation and the nation will be updated on what action will be taken.

It however observed that a media house’s economic freedom is closely linked to its editorial freedom and the situation with the Post is a classic example of what happens when economic freedom is manipulated to interfere with a media house’s editorial freedom.

Zambia Revenue Authority officers arrived at Post Newspapers head office and printing press around 17:00hours on Tuesday in the company of armed police, demanding that the company pays a total of K68 million in disputed tax arrears immediately.

Post Newspapers general manager for finance Rowena Zulu then explained that the money ZRA was demanding had already been paid almost in total.

But a ZRA officer responded that they had not yet accessed the money and thus they could not withdraw the warrant of distress.

The lawyers from Nchito and Nchito then produced a court order restraining the officers from issuing a warrant of distress on Post Newspapers, but the officers disobeyed the order.

Instead, the ZRA officers chased all employees who were still working at the head office, before locking up the entrance.

At the printing plant, the ZRA officers also switched off the printing press, locked up the premises, leaving the heavily armed police officers in charge.

  1. Dr Edgar Lungu and your minions!

Please be aware Rupiah has only used your government to advance his movements. Closing down The Post will just be a temporary fix. I hope you and your minions are well insulated against the humiliation you will receive once The Post resumes operations, you are out of power and your immunity stripped to face the courts of law. I am sure The Post is thankful for the support it has received both locally and internationally and this tax issue is just going to end up as a failed political fix.

    • LIPILA Chabe. Not this one did this or hat one said that, court did this or that, injunction this or that. Nchito is another thief. JUST PAY AND MOVE ON

    • Zambians are cowards and most docile batch of people. The country is being taken over by thugs under the authorisation of one hypocritical Chagwa and there u are, all quiet, no protest, no uniform voice!! And a lot more are even still shouting ifintu ni Lungu. ..what a shame, u are building this guy Edgar into a hittler or mugabe. After using pangs to win the next thing he will do is scrap the 10 years limit to rule and rule u forever 2gether with his kaponya ministers kailing hemail knows u areally gaulible, won’t say nothing. Anyway let you continue testing poverty for yr cowardness.. But one thing am really greatly disappointed with is the deafening quietness of the Catholics, have they also been bought off? What a batch of cowards for a people, shame, shamular!!

    • If you are blaming government for failure by Fred M’membe to pay tax then you need to have your head examined. Don`t support lawlessness just because he supports your party

    • QUOTE: “The government itself owes contractors, food suppliers, stationery suppliers, pensioners, utility companies, and civil servants and nobody, nobody, has shut them down,”

Wow, really! This is coming from someone who once acted as VP and former Evangelist? No wonder corporations in Zambia act with impunity when it comes to NOT meeting their TAX OBLIGATIONS. Because politicians don’t seem TO GET IT when it comes to the importance of paying Taxes and the morality of it. Not only is absconding on tax obligations a CRIME, it is also MORALLY REPUGNANT if you believe in the COLLECTIVE DUTY we all have to our Country. Where does Dr. Mumba think Govt will get the funds to meet its commitments he has cataloged if businesses, such as The Post, refuse to pay taxes? Govt has to raise funds…

    • continue…

Govt has to raise funds somehow, and taxes is one avenue Govt has for revenue generation—and as a former Clergy, Mr. Mumba should know Jesus’ views on paying taxes. Enough said!

    • M’membe i thought pf were your friends. Where is kambwili your friend? Your editorials on HH as a tribalist really destroyed him but he took the blow and did his way. today hh is still in the ring. Fight your battles also and just pay. we warned you about pf lelo bakwisala!!!!! i love it

    • It is very shocking to hear people supporting non tax payment more so if the same people keep promising free everything to the electorates. What a bunch of hypocrites.

    • Yambayamba – It is so sad when you see how some events uncover the foolishness of some people. How can an ex-VP utter such rubbish? Anyway, it also helps explain why Levy dropped this useless man.

    • First they came for the CommunistsAnd I did not speak outBecause I was not a CommunistThen they came for the SocialistsAnd I did not speak outBecause I was not a SocialistThen they came for the trade unionistsAnd I did not speak outBecause I was not a trade unionistThen they came for the JewsAnd I did not speak outBecause I was not a JewThen they came for meAnd there was no one leftTo speak out for me –

    • Mumba kwati napena…! where on earth does he expected certain businesses not to be paying tax. Membe is not above the law…we all pay tax…Mumba should be assessed, may be he has also stopped paying tax

    • King I agree with you. M’membe runs a private company whose profits he puts to his own use. Why has he been allowed all these years not to pay taxes on privately acquired wealth? Maybe if he decides to run a free paper then I would say he is charitable. I have never heard that he even donates his profits for a good cause anywhere. Let those who feel sorry for him donate to his cause so that he re-opens his paper and he continues to amass his wealth. He has a lot of debts. I hope everyone will go after him now that he has no power of the pen. No one is stopped from helping M’membe to pay off his debts and tax arrears. Those that are supporting pay on his behalf.

    • JUST LET THEM PAY THE TAX. WE ALL PAY EACH MONTH. WHY SUCH A BIG BUSINESS KEPT EVADING TAX IS A QUESTION UNANSWERED BY M’MEMBE. NO WONDER HE KEPT HOLDING PREVIOUS GOVERNMENTS HOSTAGE SO AS TO RUN AWAY FROM PAYING TAX.

ONLY THOSE WHO DON’T PAY TAX WILL SUPPORT POST ON THIS. YEAH PERSONS LIKE NEVERS MUMBA.

  2. The Post is an Army as it a voice for those that are unable to be heard!

EVERYONE IS ENTITLED TO THEIR OWN OPINION WHETHER RIGHT OR WRONG! the actions determine long term result!

THE POST IS HERE TO STAY!

SORRY TO ALL WHO ARE AGGRIEVED BY THIS!

THIS IS JUST ANOTHER LEADER ON HIS WAY OUT!

ENJOY THE AMBIANCE OF STATE HOUSE AND WHAT IT BRINGS FOR YOUR MINIONS!

ITS OFFICIAL! WITH ALL THE MONEY THE CURRENT SECT OF PF HAS WASTED! YOU ARE ON YOUR WAY OUT!

DO NOT BE CHEATED BY THOSE DEMOGRAPHICS THAT ARE BEEN SHOWN TO YOU! EDGAR CAGWA AGWA MANJE!

IS THIS WHAT YOU WANT TO HAVE ON YOUR LEGACY ACCORDING TO THE USELESS “SONTA EPO BW BOMBA”?

NGA BA POST BA FULWA NGA BA KALIPA! BALE SHUPA! TAMWABA KWANISHE!

    • And the POST is back on the streets with a screaming headline, ‘ZRA TURNS POST OFF….’!!!!

      POST teyakwangasha, ba POST temunobe.

I love it when the plan gets together

    • And I hope M’membe is remitting taxes on those papers he is still selling on the streets. Because the TAX issue ain’t going away—the Law has him by his nuts on this one!!!

  3. The Post is welcome to stay for ever even beyond meembe. But let them pay tax and the 14 billion is next. The supreme court passed judgement and no other small court can restrain enforcement of the judgement. Let them pay and continue their business of immoral reporting.

    • Well said. Let them pay!!!! I never read the Post but I do not want them to go out of business as other people think the Post is the gospel. However, we should fair in our dealings. Let M’membe pay his taxes even from the Company’s profits.

  4. But government itself of which ZRA is part of owes so many people, retirees and for many years, food suppliers, retrenchees, mines and so many others. And just uses its muscle to close a newspaper

    • The Post is a private entity. The government can claim to be putting the money to some other good use e.g. subsidising ZESCO, maintaining roads, employing nurses etc. Where does the Post take its monies?

    • So u don’t Know that the same money The Post Owes can be used to pay the above mentioned People, How special are The Post, if any Poor Zambian earning K3000++ is able to pay Tax and a Poor marketer with a Kantemba is able to pay Turn Over Tax, whoz Fred Not to Pay, let them just pay Period No Hard Feelings.

  5. Dr Mumba, you are preaching with your HH that you want to increase the tax-base, improve lives by enhancing access to health facilities etc. Where do you think the bloody money will come from ? Its from the Taxpayer and if one taxpayer is evading tax what happens ? The Post brought this unto themselves because the accumulated this amount because they were given a political haven by Micheal Sata then and the opposition was against this. Why are they now crying simply because one faggot’s paper has been closed. We need that money so that we SONTA !

  6. It’s amazing what PF has done to the Zambian economic and political landscape in just 5 years in power. When SATA was alive the POST was their darling. Tax issues were overlooked and only became an issue when their president passed away.
Mmembe may not be the saint but in a real democracy Times of Zambia who owe more statutory payments than POST would have been the first to be shut down. Some here have argued that TOZ is GRZ, but nothing is further from the truth. Mining companies and other parastatals which were closed many years ago. I for one will not celebrate but will wait patiently for August 11 and may God help me get there.

    • That’s why it is dangerous to build your entire business on the premise of KISSING POLITICIANS’ @SSES for favours. You might end with someone (President) in office who doesn’t want or need their @ss licked to do you biding. M’membe has finally met such a politician in Edgar Lungu.

Hard luck M’membe. Many of us don’t want to see The Post newspaper permanently shut down, but you owe these taxes. Just pay up and move on.

Let this be a good listen for your future interactions with Politicians and how you conduct your business—just be honest in your dealings with the TAX MAN—it is an obligation and duty of every Law abiding citizen of our beautiful Country.

  7. Dr Nevers Mumba is very dull. No wonder they grabbed MMD from him under his noses. He should know that tax payment is an obligation and no one should give excuses. If a business fails to meet tax obligation its as good as stealing from the poor. Let the post honour its tax obligation period.

  8. So this useless Mumba is happy for a company to operate in this country tax free…this man has no moral fiber in him to be taken serious on anything.

    • SO THE USELESS YOU, YOU HAPPY WITH DESTRUCTION THE USELESS PF AND USELESS LUNGU HAVE DONE TO OUR BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY? I AM SO SAD TO HAVE A USELESS AND MORALLY BANKRUPT COMPATRIOT IN YOUR. MAYBE BE YOU ARE ALSO FROM MALAWI.

    • I have SMEs in the country and I pay tax….i would be glad as well if the wasnt any tax for 10+ years no import duty or anything. Only street vendors like you who dont pay dont feel the pain…to hell with your Fred even if he is against the govt of the day when it suits him.

  9. Failure to pay tax is criminal in other countries and its people like Fredy Mmembe who made it harder for our politicians to govern and to actually solve problems once they are elected. People are ignorant to history and it is insanity, during the reign of King Cobra Michael Chilufya SATA there was a lot of dishonest reporting by praise singing by post- Michael this, Michael that, and yet they knew no one heals themselves by wounding another.

  10. Dr Nevers Mumba the same money Fred Mmembe and the Post Newspapers owes the Government, that’s the same money which will be used to pay the same contractors you’re saying Government owes money…In Dr Mumba’s warped mind he thinks Government prints money to pay contractors…Again Dr Mumba I urge you to go back to the Church as politics is not your calling…

  11. The crusade to make post accountable started with the opposition and sata was protecting them. After sata died one Ecl seized the opportunity of making Mmembe pay tax areas and dbz loans. Fred was aware that the Zambian people wanted him to pay and that’s why Ecl was voted for. It’s now over a year since he was given a repayment plan but instead of paying he runs to the courts to buy time. Who is to blame now.?
We the majority are the ones who wants him to pay and you the little minions will be crushed should you start behaving funny.

    • @zakeyo you are 100 % +1 correct. Mumba is dull. He doesn’t know the cycle of money flow. Govt gets money from tax to pay civil servants suppliers etc and Mmembe was even mocking govt of delaying to pay salaries meanwhile the 1mbeciles are the causer.

  12. Ba Nevers you are not a leader. believ me a leader knows what is right but if you can’t speak the truth instead you support with your feelings then you dont deserve to be a leader.

i can encourage ZRA to do the same to other companies who dont pay tax.

  13. The Post precedence set by ZRA will live to haunt Lungu and his minions and first on the chopping block will be Berlin Msiska and his relatives AB Chikwanda, Rupiah Banda, Margaret Mwanakatwe, Mvunga, Gen Chimense….watch!

    • @Salamat: Are you talking VENDADA or LAW? What Law have these people you have mentioned broken for you to hold such a blinding grudge against them? Interesting how Partisan Politics can make people go mad!

  14. The POST survived 10 yrs under Chiluba, 07 yrs under Mwanawasa, 03 yrs under Mwanawanyoko and under less than 02 years under a thief who stole client’s money the POST is closed. What a sad day for mother Zambia.

  15. buti ba pastor aba,,,i think bapuba period.ati first thing wen u r zambian president u will bring down UTH, then MMD, now ati ‘The government itself owes contractors’….come on wat sort of reasoning is that.

  16. This is just a gimmick by Freddy. He is pulling Lungu into his direction. He is deliberately allowing Lungu to act desperately. What will now happen is The Post will receive a lot of sympathy from the donor community and when they come back Lungu’s image at international level in terms of good governance will have already been tarnished. Wait and see what will happen to the economy and weakening of the kwacha when donors pull strings on account of bad governance. That is how he is playing it. But Vuvuzelas who cant read between lines are celebrating. Then war will start between Lungu and The Post until the voting day. Mark my words The Post is coming back. Lungu is very dull and has allowed Freddy to pull him in his direction.

    • It is the Courts, another arm of Govt which M’membe once effectively used/misused in the past to continue defaulting on his Tax Bill, which has finally told him to pay up; NOT EDGAR LUNGU!

It must be very strange and new to some of you to see/have a President who wants to least try to have Govt Institutions operate with some semblance of Autonomy and Independence, right? Why do you have to drag the President’s name in nearly everything that happens in the Country? Even when crimes are successfully committed by people with their own FREE WILL—M’membe willingly ignored paying Taxes, so I don’t see why the President should be blamed for it!

Well, it seems there are no more Judges he (M’membe) can manipulate, threaten, hold hostage, lambast, intimidate, coerce, or buy in the…

  17. U pepo comdeming this action by zra , do pay tax from your salaries or your business if do then u know nevers is from the church were they don’t pay tax he is used for free money from members

  18. Ba Mumba just campaign for a posting as ambassador so you can steal again no where in the world can government be shut down for failure to pay; but a private citizen running a business? He must pay and not externalize profits and then ‘refuse’ to pay taxes….so get a life and go back to seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and then all the things of the world including your quest to campaign will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and Grace…. The Past has its work cut out but like HH says he will reopen them because he intends to run ZRA affairs from his boudoir with Maureen

  19. I pay K20 000 per month from my Salary. Post employee are deducted PAYE. Everytime I buy a Post Newspaper I pay VAT. PAYE and VAT are taxes paid by other people and the Post as a company are just supposed to remit to the Tax authority. Why are the Post owners not doing this? In the meantime the newspaper preaches morality!

  20. If we all presented promises to tax authorities which can not be honoured where will our country be?Taxes are a major source of government revenue.Ordinary citizens are subjected to PAYE,VAT,CARBON TAX you name it.

  21. One quality of a good tax system is objectivity the other is Equity. The Post hasn’t refused to pay it taxes . It has been paying though under very difficult circumstances. what I see is political interference because ZRA is not been objective. But what goes up will surely come down one day. who ever is behind this they will answer for it one day if not after August 11th 2016.
    VIVA press freedom ..
To My brothers at the Post .. take heart ..this is nothing compared to what we went thru in the 90’s. I know king Fred , Post employees and indeed the Zambian people will fight this little battle to the end.

    • You are a big joke my friend. How long must it take for them to start paying, one, ten or 50 years? Do you even pay taxes?

  22. Mr Mumber go back to the pulpit and preach the gospel to the people especially these last days . you were not called to be a politician but a man of GOD

  23. We Zambians are fools and we are now paying the price of our mistake. In January 2015 we elected a thief and a thug as our President. Lungu stole a client’s money and ascended to the PF Presidency thru violence. Now Lungu thru violence wants to install himself as a rising dictator. Lungu’s role models are Uncle Bob and Mu7. Lungu is doing exactly what these 2 dictators did in their respective countries to steal elections. Lungu has closed the Post as part of his Election Rigging Plan. This Is not about tax issues. It is about muzzling and silencing private press to facilitate election rigging and violence. Zambians we now realise the monster we created last year and on 11th August 2016 we have a chance to correct our mistake and remove this fastest rising dictator in Zambia. Lungu must…

  24. Which shutting down.? The Post is on the streets selling. But Lungu bakupanga ubukopo ayi. Wait a minute, do not celebrate. Freddy enjoys this game. He is not even heart broken as some of you may be thinking or rejoicing. He calls this temporal set back. He is deliberately allowing this to happen. He is enticing Lungu to cause problems for himself. I’m sure he has a printing plant somewhere in the sky. Otherwise where were those newspapers printed from in the streets toady. It is nice sometimes to be complicated like Freddy. I enjoy seeing the guy when there are big problems and I’m watching the how the game is being played.

  25. Zambians u never cease to amaze me, sure can a true Zambian sympathize with the situation surrounding the post newspaper? That is why our country lacks behind because of our own attitude as a people, calling innocent people as thieves and encouraging thieves to continue depriving the state of its finances, just becoz u have got political interest from what they publish. If it is unfair or that govt is against the post, why not watchdog becoz watchdog has been bias and has ever been insulting the president but rather the post, they are criminals. When govt delayed to pay students allowances you said lots of bad words against Lungu and Kaingu but here is a thief who has stolen public funds u are supporting, is it different with those who said kill Jesus Christ and save Barabas for us? This…

  26. Let them just,me I pay every month.Don’t support stupid things put your politics aside ala.Let the post be closed until they pay what they owe Zambians.

  27. what kind of thinking is that ba mumba? you same people will badly complain if teachers, nurses and students are not given their dues… when you know for sure that government gets it income from taxes. .. but today you stand with the post and say its unfair. ..such incompetence. .. whether pf loses votes or not, they have done a right thing…

  28. I have a very simple but effective piece of advice for the Post. Just pay every ngwee you owe in tax and you ll see how the govt wont be able to touch you! Simples!

  29. Ba Pastor aba katwishi mwandi nga balibafye bwino. He is conman pastor.nowonder we can’t even waste a single vote for u in bemba land.Jesus paid tax and he gave us good example.Even in churches they teach us to be responsible citizens by paying taxes.Where do u want money to come from ba Pastor imwe?U expect good roads, hospitals and infrastructure if pipo are not paying taxes?come on u’re so backward nowonder Mwanawasa kicked out in a short period.it seems u can’t rule but can only speak whatever comes out of your mouth. We need principled leaders who can’t stand for what ‘s right. The courts of Zambia have ruled that post should pay tax.what do u want then if suprime court say pay tax.let us be serious and never allow pipo like Mumba,HH,GBM otherwise zambia will be sold in 4 months…

  30. And this guy was once Vice President of Zambia. Does he not realise the importance of paying taxes? If he thinks some people should get away with it, how about everyone else who’s paying. Suppose other employers stop remitting the PAYE from their employees to the ZRA, what’s gonna happen? The country will simply collapse. PAY YOUR TAXES and nobody will bother with you.

  31. I PAY TAX EVERY MONTH WITHOUT FAIL FROM THE LITTLE I EARN NOW WHO THE HELL DOES FRED THINK HE IS NOT TO PAY ? DAMN LET HIM PAY ZRA FINISH AND KLAR . HE HAD THE CHANCE TO PAY SLOW MANJE NTOTA , IF HE HAS PAID IN FULL THEY SHALL GIVE BACK THE KEYS FINISH ITS NOT LIKE THE HAVE DEMOLISHED THE COMPANY . OTHERS ARE COMIN FOR YOU KOSA CHABE. OSA TUCANA NGWENYA MATAKO YAKALI MU MANZI ! PAY

  32. If The Post was paying the taxes as it should patriotically do, just like my poor uncle in Chama does, it was, indeed, going to be a dark day for the media. But supporting a tax-evading media to remain functional is questionable! The Post survives by riding on the backs of politicians to evade taxes.

  33. MMEMBE HAS BECOME STUBBORN BECAUSE SUCCESSIVE GOVERNMENTS HAVE BEEN USING HIM TO CHAMPION THEIR ILL MOTIVES. THEY HAVE ALL ALLOWED HIM TO DODGE TAXES ONCE HE IS ON THEIR SIDE. ALL THE PREVIOUS GOVERNMENTS HAVE BEEN GOING TO BED WITH MMEMBE AND HIS POST. SO HE SEES NO NEED TO PAY THE TAXES. IF UPND WINS THESE ELECTIONS (AND GOD FORBID), MMEMBE WILL STILL BE ALLOWED TO SURVIVE WITHOUT PAYING TAXES. SO, IN A WAY, YOU CANNOT BLAME MMEMBE. I ONLY HOPE THIS TIME THE PF WILL BE SERIOUS.

  34. “The government itself owes contractors, food suppliers, stationery suppliers, pensioners, utility companies, and civil servants and nobody, nobody, has shut them down
It is simple Nevers, if Government owes these firms as you claim, it is because you and minions in business like Mmembe and many others are defaulting on tax payment. I thought you, Nevers, would be smarter having worked in Government. Government does not make money to use in the economy. It raises revenue through tax collections. Nevers, your shallow minded behaviour is worrying to say the least.
Of course, you forget so easily, it was the same Post Newspaper that costed your Veep position during the LPM regime. Your Political mindset is begining to becloud your sense of reasoning. Every Zambian must pay taxes, you…

  35. It is sad to see our country Zambia going backwards and we are all watching. Please God sought out this government for the sake of your people. We cry to you Abba father you are not dead but alive intervene Lord we pray in Jesus name.

  36. Mumba failed to repay a bank loan and to avoid the bailiffs he hid his items at Simsons. Lucky for him Mwanawasa appointed HIM VP!

  37. MWANOMAMBULWA, please don’t mention my beloved Malawi in this matter, careful in choosing words stay in line period. we pay Tax for your information.

  38. This is a Politically motivated move to deny Zambia alternative view points and ideas. This scenario suits DICTATORS as there will NO longer have checks and balances needed in a democracy.

  39. Nevers sounds like a lost sheep.clear proof that his reversion to upnd was unprincipled and highly undirected. reminder to him, ‘give to caesar what belongs to caesar and to God …’ no pastor worth the vision would overlook that line

  40. Ba Nevers Mumba, you can’t tell anyone now what you are, what you are doing and your direction. Today you say this, tomorrow that…!!! You failed as Vice President, you think you can manage as President…? Problem your motives are wrong and your appetite fro power, glory, money is too much. Church and Politics are not the same. We know you have no income and are broke…. you hope that HH and GBM would share their money with you. But am not sure if there still remains any relationship between you and God coz these guys will make you do rubbish for their money.

Stop using the Name of God on political Platforms. I heard, in Chipata, you said, “As long as I am the Man of God, ECL won’t be in power…” If this is true, then I doubt your spirituality coz it won’t be the first time…

  41. Matt 22:15-21
Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his words. They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians. “Teacher,” they said, “we know you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren’t swayed by men, because you pay no attention to who they are. Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?” But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, “You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me? Show me the coin used for paying the tax.” They brought him a denarius, and he asked them, “Whose portrait is this? And whose inscription?” “Caesar’s,” they replied. Then he said to them, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”
