Madaliso Muthiya wins debut Sunshine Tour golf title

Zambia’s top golfer Madaliso Muthiya on Saturday won his debut title on the Sunshine Tour.

Muthiya, 33 won the three-round, Vodacom Origins Tour Title by two shots to become the first Zambian to win a tournament on the Sunshine Tour circuit.

He took home Rand 110, 950 of the Rand 700,000-rich event staged on South Africa’s Wild Coast after carding a final round of 11-under 199 beating off a strong challenge for the South African contingent.

Muthiya finish at four-under 66 on the final round in what was his best score over the three days.

2016 Zambia Open third place finisher Hennie du Plessis of South Africa was second at nine-under 67 tied with compatriot Ockie Strydom.

Muthiya had a near-flawless final round with four birdies and one bogey on the par-three number four.

It is Muthiya best finish after three years on the tour after finishing second at the Sun Sibaya Challenge in September, 2015.

Muthiya joined the Sunshine Tour in 2014 after seven years on the second tier USA PGA Challenge Tour.

His local career highlights include a 6th place finish at the 2000 Zambia Open in Lusaka that he bettered in 2006 at Nchanga with a runners-up spot.
