The Patriotic Front says the impending election petition by the UPND will help show that it also suffered due to election malpractices.
The UPND has confirmed that it will file petition papers this week in the constitutional court hoping to overturn the election victory of President Edgar Lungu.
But in an interview, PF Deputy Spokesman Frank Bwalya said the party is excited that the UPND intends to petition the outcome of the presidential election.
Mr Bwalya said the PF is confident that the Judiciary will handle the matter judiciary and expeditiously.
He said the party will comply with the provisions of the amended constitution and allow the Speaker to act as President once the petition papers are filed in.
Mr Bwalya said the PF will use the petition process as an opportunity to highlight the many injustices that some of its election agents faced intimidation and some were beaten up in UPND strongholds.
He said the party’s legal team will be on hand to defend the re-election of President Edgar Lungu.
And Mr Bwalya has advised PF members to celebrate the victory responsibly and not mock the losers.
He said President Lungu does not want to see mock coffins in UPND colours saying such celebrations are provocative.

Who will over see it when UPND have already said the ECZ is not credible?? Is it possible to nullify an election in certain parts of the country and order re-run in the cited constituencies only?
The petition should be thrown out, they can not dictate to us who we must choose as our president, we have exercised our democratic right and we have chosen EL as our leader for the next 5 years period.

As a UPND die hard, I think our running mate contributed to loss of votes. Just look at Kasama Central, PF got 25,321 whereas we got only 9,537. I think GBM should be flashed out of the party. Had it not been for GBM, disaster was awaiting HH in muchinga, northern, Lusaka, luapula, copperbelt. i recall 2008 and 2011 .. HH was 450 votes against Ba SATA’ s 24000 in some constituencies on the copperbelt. Gbm added more value than inonge did to EDGAR. had it not been for GBM, HH would ve gotten 425 votes in Kasama.

A loss is disappointing and HH and team must naturally be disappointed. However, there are things that transcend disappointment. In my view, the ConCourt battle that Team UPND has is for the law lords to pronounce themselves on what is a free and fair election. The task for the UPND team is to urge the court to pronounce itself as I saw elsewhere on this blog on these matters, inter alia:
I. Freedom to campaign with State embargo and beatings from cadres
2. Role of public media
3. Use of State resources by the illegitimate ministers
4. Conduct of elections by ECZ, the forms required etc
5. Tallying of votes and reconciling to register
6. Killing of opponents and brutality
Unless the law is settled on these, forget about participating in an election.

The Constitution of Zambia (Amendment) [No.2 of 2016] provides as follows in Article 72(1) A Member of Parliament shall, except the Speaker and the First Deputy Speaker, vacate the seat in the National Assembly upon a dissolution of Parliament.
In case of no Speaker, the supreme court justice shall act as President. Justice Mambilima shall preside over the nation.
