Former Heavyweight boxer Joseph ‘No Pressure’ Chingangu was last night severely beaten by some UNZA students after he was allegedly found trying to steal laptops.

Police Spokesman Rae Hamoonga said Chingangu aged 48 aged of unknown House number was yesterday at unknown time but between 21:00 hours and 22:00 Hours badly beaten by students at University of Zambia.

“It is alleged that the victim wanted to steal a laptop from a student as he was standing by the window of the hostel and attempted to get it through the window and that’s how the mob of students descended on him. He is currently admitted to Levy Mwanawasa Hospital,” Mr Hamoonga said.

“We would like to warn members of the public who are in the habit of engaging in mob justice that it is a crime and the long arm of the law shall surely catch up with them.”

Chingangu was recently arrested and charged with aggravated robbery but he was discharged by the Lusaka Magistrates Court after witnesses who were Chinese nationals failed to testify against him.

Chingangu at the height of his boxing career briefly stayed in the USA and fought Heavyweight Champion Vladimir Klitschko in 1990 and lost.

  1. Chingangu, why engage in stealing?
I think the National Sports Council and Boxing board of control or whatever they are called should sit him down, give him a role as a coach to train upcoming boxers. Where is Mr Kalenga?

    • Country men and women, poverty and hunger should be the enemy number one. It is sad that a person like Chingangu has found himself in such a position. He must be shown love and be rehabilitated by the Boxing Council of Zambia. He needs help and not mocking. The spirit of mocking in this country has attained heights of unprecedented levels. As a people, especially those who claim to be Christians, must be at the core value system of our being as individuals and societies. If insulting in public by leaders continue to be the center debating issues, then this country is in trouble. Timely warning to all leaders at all levels to debate without demeaning or insulting others. Please Fr Bwalya and Pastor Mumba take a lead in this issue.

  2. Chingangu was an armed robber before he became a boxer. Unfortunately he’s returned to his old ways due to hard times.

Best for him is to start boxing coaching or go back to his village in N/W province. Otherwise Jail or an early grave is waiting for him.

UNZA students kill robbers by stoning. I’ve personally witnessed at least 3 robbers getting killed by monks.

  3. My nigga! From fighting Klitschko to a common thief! Zambia can finish people mwebantu! That guy should be working as a boxing coach or something……Well done UNZA students. ZP are always sleeping or tending to their personal business anyway!

  4. That is what happens with riches which come from the world, they slip away from your hands during the day light whilst you are watching. The blessings which come from God never slip your hands until death when you leave them as legacy for your children and children’s children. May God forgive him and save his soul.

  5. Chingangu has resorted to such kind behavior to furnish his drug addiction. Sitting him down or reaching to the Sports Council will not transform this man to role model. He needs drug rehabilitation first, then maybe after recovery he might contribute to boxing. It’s a long shot but good luck to him!

  6. What measures is this country putting forward to prevent our young sports men and women from ending up like this. Africa is strange. Anything goes!

  7. @Marie-Anne, you correctly guessed that before becoming a boxer Chingangu was an armed robber , but went ahead and gave him a tribe or province he does not belong to. For your own information and probably for others too. Chingangu is from DRC, yes he is Congolese. I have known him including his late mom for many years.

    • Ba Mwine, check out the following:

      The Lunda

Now living in the Luapula area and North Western Provinces, the Lunda people are descendants of the original Mwata Yamvwa Chieftainship in Zaire.

      The Bemba

Representing some 18% of the population, the Bemba, along with the Lunda recognise an almost legendary place called Kola as their land of origin. Historically they were nomadic hunter gatherers. Their paramount chief is called the Chitimukulu. When copper mining began in earnest on the Copperbelt, the Bemba speaking people came down for jobs in force.

That is how Kazembe, in Luapula, also gets the title “Mwata” Kazembe, just like “Mwata” Yamvwa!!

So, in the large scheme of things: Chingangu is a descendant from KOLA!!! So in some weird way, YOU are both correct!!

      I…

  8. @Katondo Boys my brother, I am very much aware of the history you have brought up. I remember passing G9 history exam because of the interest I had in the subject. The man concerned (Chingangu), does not hail from any where near Zambia or from the two respective chiefs you’ve mentioned. I my post I indicated that I ve know him and his family for a very long time. My very good friend comes from the same village with him. He once told me that they come from Kananga and not katanga in the DRC, from chief Mpan’ga. They claim to be a dominating Luba tribe in the country. Chief Mpanga, by the way is in no way associated with the chiefs you mentioned. Try research on the tribes in the province I’ve mentioned then you will understand.
