Former MISA -Zambia Chairperson Kellys Kaunda has urged Muvi TV, Komboni and Itezhi Tezhi radio stations to seek a negotiated settlement with the Independent Broadcasting Authority-IBA, following the suspension of their broadcasting licences.

Mr. Kaunda, a media Consultant, says the three stations must resist the temptation of playing to the gallery over the matter.

He says messages of solidarity the stations are receiving may be psychologically soothing but may not be helpful in a speedy resolution of their cases.

Mr Kaunda said this in a statement released to ZNBC News in Lusaka.

He has noted that public comments on the action taken by IBA are not helping the situation and most of them are pure political statements that are simply inflaming an environment that can be managed differently.

Mr Kaunda feels Members of the public must resist the temptation to talk about every issue and passing judgment even when their knowledge of the subject consists of bits and pieces.

He has observed that it took several months of expert observation on the part of the IBA to emerge with the charges levelled against Muvi TV, Komboni and Itezhi Tezhi radio stations.

On Monday, the IBA suspended broadcasting licences for Muvi TV, Komboni and Itezhi-Tezhi radio stations for unprofessional conduct.

IBA Board Chairperson Justin Mutale announced this at a media briefing saying the three broadcasting stations have conducted themselves in a manner which poses a risk to national peace and stability.

  1. What are you saying you job seeker! Keep quiet if you have nothing to talk about you idi0t! If you want a job from edgar go quietly you twit!

    • @1 I hate… this is the problem with some of you people. What is wrong with Kellys Kaunda (KK)’s advice? His advice is free and those who are wise listen to all advice and then choose to follow what they believe is right for them. Who has power in this case? Is it IBA or Muvi etal? Who is crying and who has lost an income? From your name I can see you are a tribalist bcoz you have forgotten that HH in 2006 went to Lozis and told them “not to vote Saki of ULP bcoz he had sold them to Bembas by working with Sata” that was after rising to the presidency of UPND on the theme of “only a Tonga can be president of UPND” something HH has never denounced! See what is happening in Namwala now!Lungu has never said this of sort thins and has been reaching out to all people!

    • I agree on muvi tV, the last stock was broadcasting that Lucinda was in Livingstone to manipulate vote counts. They forgot Lucinda was a minister of broadcasting he knows how to answer back. Shut it down!

    • This Kaunda is a Fo.ol, deserve not to be a consultant. such are people making the authority, influenced by politicians make such mistakes. The action is not justifiable and lucks credibility.

Muvi TV, sue and get your ,money, they disrupted your business.

    • Democracy is supposed to be rule of the people, by the people, and for the people. But in order to rule effectively, the people need political knowledge. If they know little or nothing about government, it becomes difficult to hold political leaders accountable for their performance. Unfortunately, public knowledge about politics is disturbingly low. The closure of radio and tv staions will make the people even more IGNORANT!

    • “Mr Kaunda feels Members of the public must resist the temptation to talk about every issue.” It seems like some politicians in Africa do not understand the era they’re living in now. Seems like they’re still stuck in the past. It’s the era of the internet. Some 30, 40, 50 years ago, the only way the public made comments on news items was either by postal mail to the editor, or by phone call, for those who could afford making calls to the radio or TV station. Now with the dawn of the internet, things have changed completely, because it’s now easy for people to comment on current issues in real time, even from their phones, as long as they’re connected to the internet. And it doesn’t matter what part of the world they’re in. Internet has made participation in matters that…

    • (Continued)… concern them easy, which is health for democracy—and maybe bad news for politicians who want to be secretive. Remember democracy is a government of the people, by the people, for the people. So people have every right to comment on how their government is being run. People who are elected to public office work for the people, and not the other round. That’s why they’re called public servants. The government belongs to the people. So it’s logical that they should have a say in all matters that concern their government. Just get used to it. And by the way, you still haven’t told us why you had to shut down these news media outlets. We’re still waiting. Stop the secrecy and be more transparent. Democracy is about transparency. And our demand is not politically…

    • (Continued)… motivated as you suggest. Anybody who believes in the preservation of freedom of the press would protest the suspension, regardless of what political party you belong to, or even if you don’t belong to any. Unless you believe you have some compelling reasons for doing so, the news companies you shut down were doing a public service. So you owe the public an explanation.

  2. No one needs to preach tribalism, you silly twerp! It is on display in Southern Province as I write. The truth hurts and I can tell from your comments you are hurt. I’m sorry if you are from there, but that’s the truth. Zambians are not interested in tribalism but oneness as a nation. ONE ZAMBIA, ONE NATION!

    • One Zambia, One Nation so called is lost my friend. In fact, we didnt lose it, we discarded it as it has been just window dressing

  3. I thought being a media consultant this fool will say something sensible but unfortunately I have just realised that the ***** is a job seeker.

  4. When did you hear ECL and CK preaching tribalism. It is preached and indoctrinated by your icilema and the likes of sejani, vj and others.Look at the way non tongas have been brutalized in southern province. The brutalized are saying this themselves and from hospital beds and you and and your icilema are rejoicing shame

  5. The headline in Times Of Zambia yesterday was the most dangerous and closest to inciting civil unrest Zambia has ever been and hopefully will ever be.
How does a headline like `Ethnic cleansing in Southern Province’ find its way to the front page.
The Country is on a genocide watch right now and should the unthinkable happen whoever wrote that headline will be in the Netherlands one day to face the music.

    • @Echos of… how do you explain what is happening in Namwala, Choma and other places were they are attacking people bcoz of ethnicity? The one writing those headlines is actually alerting the world to the “ethnic genocide in the making”. What headline would you suggest if the perpetrators of violence of targeting people based on their ethnicity?

    • We assume that the violence in Namwala is related to the election loss by the UPND and perpetrated by that party’s perceived supporters, against those deemed to have voted against the party. But that demographic is not ethnically homogeneous for a varied number of reasons.

To begin with, it’s not possible to separate people by how they voted based on their tribe. The UPND ticket had a Tonga and a Bemba on it, therefore, it’s very likely that some Bembas and Tongas based in Namwala voted for the UPND. At the same time they are some Tongas who didn’t vote UPND, who are related to Namwala natives like the candidates who stood on the other parties . Then there is that other significant demographic inter-tribal citizens who can’t be classified in a specific grouping, these could have…

    • Voted any way. Therefore violence by those who felt aggrieved, against perceived enemies, would not be restricted to a particular tribe but cut across many.

A news media outlet is supposed to be aware of such possibilities and be mindful of them as they report. Failure to do so, as has been shown in the wrong charecterisation of happenings, threatens to put a more dangerous perspective to an otherwise small pocket of truant behaviour. Which is nothing more than what local law enforcement acting with minimal professionalism can arrest.

    • In short there was first and foremost political violence by those aggrieved with an election result. They assumed that the cause for this was most likely tribe related and in trying to meet out punishment found out that the perceived enemy included tribesmen, therefore illegitimising any cause for ethnic cleansing.
Times Of Zambia should have included that angle, unlike now we’re they have created an impression that a tribal altercation has been launched. With battle lines allegedly distinctly drawn out on tribal lines. Sad!

  6. Why seek a settled negotiation? Have they done anything wrong? This is an infringed on peoples rights. Why silence people wanting to be heard? Does ZNBC feature, interview or invited poor villagers to come to the station and air their views and frustrations? Please give people their rights and entitlements to speak freely and willingly without fear on issues. What national risk of peace and stability has Muvi Tv imposed that Lungu has not done already? Lungu right now is a walking time bomb, a liability and a national risk to the nation. Problem is chaps like this are always looking for opportunities yet forget there are knowledgeable Zambians capable of challenge them. Remember “freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of speech and of the press is a right.”

    • Some one was celebrating his claim that ‘we have won on the Referendum’ i.e. it NOT passing through, where are these rights you are talking about were to be enhanced…

    • Some one was celebrating his claim that ‘we have won on the Referendum’ i.e. it NOT passing through, where all these rights you are talking about were to be enhanced…

    • ITS NOT WRONG TO BE BIASED IN REPORTING BUT ITS WRONG TO INCITE THE MASSES BY REPORTING WRONG INFORMATION LIKE e.g ECZ CUTS ECL VOTES AND QUOTES ECZ AS HAVING CONFIRMED. ALOOWING NEVERS MUMBA TO DECLARE HH AS PRESIDENT WHO IS NOT AN ECZ OFFICIAL. HE WENT THERE WITH HIS OWN FIGURES. THATS NOT BEING BIAS BUT UNETHICAL BECAUSE YOU INCITING THE MASSES TO RISE AGAINST THE OTHERS.
I BELIEVE THATS THE POSITION TAKEN TO CLOSE THE SAID MEDIA STATIONS.

    • @Mbondi the Times of Zambia headline was not only wrong but worse. To all those not in Namwala, that headline was a defacto deceleration of a tribal cleansing; the beginning of a tribal war. Horrifying reportage if you ponderously look at it!

    • Tongas, and many other non-Tongas have been attacked in Namwala. Yet the paper created an impression that only particular tribes were attack. The unfair spin-off from that being unjustified anger against people from other ethnic groups that were also victims in Namwala.

  7. This Kaunda idio*t irritates me, i listen to him on hot fm everyday in the mornings waffling like a dog, the chap is a pure PF carder looking for a job. i wonder why Hot FM always bring this idio*t to make irritating noise in the mornings for us. his contributions are PF inclined and the problem he has he thinks he is smart….. i need to let him know on his facebook account, the nigg*a pisses the shi*t out of me

  8. Kellys advise is the best one can get for free. The legal route will take long and just see what happened to your friends at the POST, they thought they knew it all, where are they now? Sometimes its better to admit that you made mistakes and just apologise. An apology will take just one word, unlike if you choose to go to Courts etc.
The same players who were using you are now in their Mansions drinking Wines and just condemning the authorities with no solution for you people at MUVI and the two radio stations. Please refrain from being used to that extent, you are grown up and educated individuals.

  9. ANY right thinking editor or DG of any Radio or Television station should incorporate a policy that allows a balance and a sense of nationalism. The years of the warlords, serf lords or indeed ethnic groupings have no place in society…in 1980 in Rwanda at the height of the tension a particular radio station championed the mass murder of others all in the name of freedom of speech…a famous DJ would take to the air and mock those who were ‘hesitating’ to ‘do their duty’…They were all tried and convicted for crimes against humanity…for a long time here we have thought it cannot happen to us… go to matero, namwala etc..what do you think you are witnessing? Do not hide behind freedoms for a few pieces of gold made during elections.

  10. What Kelly is advising is that, if one is a dander head, lower yourself to their level so that you are listened to! If you stick to your level headedness and his is incapacitated to reach your level, you will simply go round circle!

  11. This country is at this level of tension ,all because of ECZ which worked hard for PF and their bellies instead of working for whole of Zambia!

    • @12 Keen Follower, if you believe what you are saying then tell the UPND Lawyers to quickly serve summons so that the case can start so that UPND can prove how ECZ stole their victory!! Numbers do not lie! There are polling certificates for all polling stations signed by parties in presence of monitors! Only looser resorts to propaganda while pursuing a legal process at the same time. We all love democracy and freedom expression but we want responsibility and patriotism! If war breaks out the blame will again to those in power for having failed to manage security! SAFETY KULI SUNGA WEMWINE!!

  12. I am non partisan but this Kaunda guy is flat. If it took “seven months of the IBA to monitor suspended stations”, BUT do you need EVEN a week to observe the unprofessional conduct of ZNBC. If the man started from there, he was going to make a bit of sense.

    • Maliya – Do you mean your perceived bias in coverage between opposition and ruling party by ZNBC? Has ZNBC been preaching falsehoods and inciting violence? Are you sure you are making equivalent comparisons?

  13. it seems all you people that keep supporting this way of reporting don’t realize that you are in Zambia too and that your relatives are in Zambia too. do you not realize that the killing will be indiscriminate? think very carefully, your kids and wives and parents will be displaced. when two elephants fight, its the grass that suffers. we are the grass, don’t forget that

  14. IT IS MIND SOOTHING AND EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO HEAR WORDS FROM WISE PEOPLE
    ======================================
I applaud Kellys Kaunda for those highly encouraging and wise utterances. I sober mind can get Muvi TV back on track and they would have learnt from their mistakes.
When times are bad, you find very few friends. We would like them back on air changed and behaving yeah!

  15. @ Thorn in the flesh – you mean you want them to bow to your music? No way buddy! In your dreams. The problem at hand lies with you people who think Zambia belongs to you. Fortunately for us it does not. We will make sure this remains a free Zambia for Zambians. You just keep eating PF money being thrown your way in a dogs bowl. We will make sure our future generation live in peace and free from the Lungu’s of this world. He will go down in history as the worst president in Zambia. History has already started writing his terrible short term legacy.

    • HH will not pay their salaries forever. I feel terrible for some innocent workers at Muvi TV who mean well and non partisan innocent subscribers but for one reckless Costa who feels a great deal of himself and whom supposedly HH promised a position in his imaginary cabinet. Let’s face it, HH is allegedly running the station. Now hurry go and don’t meddle in adult talk; go tell mama to change you, your nappy is heavy now. Spoiled kid.

  16. Kellys Kaunda has sold out to PF. He used to be a friend to Muvi Tv. Now he can go to ZNBC for a walk-in interview. Only PF puppets are allowed at ZNBC.
