President Edgar Lungu has sent a message of condolences to Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi over the tragic loss of hundreds of lives during an earthquake which struck Central Italy on August, 24, 2016.
President Lungu said he is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of lives in the recent earthquake and prayed for God’s comfort and solace to the bereaved families during this trying period.
Mr. Lungu said the Zambian people commiserate with the Italian people as they mourn their beloved ones.
This is according to a statement issued to ZANIS in Lusaka today by Special Assistant to the President for Press and Public Relations, Amos Chanda.
Meanwhile, according to the BBC, the death toll in the August 24, 2016 Italian earthquake stands at 241, as rescuers maximise their efforts to find survivors.
Dozens of people are believed to have been trapped in ruined Amatrice, Accumoli and Pescara del Tronto in the mountainous Central Italy.
