The Opposition in Woe?

Share

FILE: MMD Dr Nevers Mumba during the presidential debateI am certain by now most of the political parties especially those in opposition are planning on how they can win the 2021 elections. Before I even go far I must make a point here that the Patriotic Front was very lucky to have won the 2015 elections.

The 2021 election will be another interesting one as it will be similar to what we saw in 2001 when we had no incumbent on the ballot. Like any other such election, 2021 won’t be a race for the faint hearted, nor the battle for the weak. I am sure those in the opposition may want to agree with me that the next five years in opposition won’t be easy. The PF is a very brutal government as we have already seen from several actions taken by police and other law enforcement agencies so far. Police summons and call-outs are flying all over the show heading to different directions. Just yesterday one of my good friends from one media house was taken to police for questioning. They are so determined to deal with anyone that seems to breaking the law to the extent that not even the media is spared. But then this is the same government that promised us that they will enact laws that would protect the media. I guess that was just another peace of political rhetoric.

The PF is not the type of government that I believe will tolerate the opposition and give them freedom to conduct their mobilisation. It may as well be either concluded or perceived that the president really want to inculcate some level of ‘discipline’ in the opposition and the media.

Out of all the political parties in the opposition today, the UPND is at a higher risk of going into extinction before the 2021 elections. They are now the target by those in power. The PF knows very well that if the UPND is left unchecked, they may become stronger in 2021 especially that the PF candidate for 2021 presidency remains unknown until potentially few months before the general elections. The UPND made their own mistakes in the last elections and I can only hope that they will learn from their mistakes and do better next time.

Unfortunately the behaviour of the UPND so far does not indicate that they have learnt anything from the past election. If I were part of the UPND leadership I would be urging the party to use the bemba science of “ukupoka icinsenda ku nkoko kunakilila”. The PF leadership is not the type that one can go head to head with. They are very different from the MMD. These ones are a tough team that will lock up anyone that does anything that appears punishable by law. Few stubborn people will survive though with some injuries.

We will potentially see the return of NAREP and president Chipimo on the ballot in 2021. At that time the party will be ten (10) years plus in opposition, the same time it took president Sata in the opposition before he became president. NAREP will have to remind the voters about the importance of issue based politics and convince them that President Chipimo is the right man hoping I am not judging too early that it will be president Chipimo as the party maybe going for a convention according to their party constitution. But all the same the principle still applies that NAREP will have an uphill battle. They have been one of the most inconsistent parties in the last few months. The party has also lost a lot of ‘credible’ members most of them now serving in different capacities in the PF. But on the other hand this could just be a cleansing process to allow better people to join and move the party to greater heights.

I am not very sure if the Rainbow Party SG Comrade Wynter Kabimba will want to contest the elections again in 2021 after losing terribly in the last election, losing to even the youngest political party on the scene PAC. I have not heard the plans that the FDD is working on and so that makes it a bit hard to even guess what may happen with our mother’s vibrant party in 2021.
I must state here that Zambia has the potential and opportunity in 2021 to try a all-new crop of leaders. We have vibrant young politicians that I believe would be good to try out in the next election.

By the way I understand that my good friend Chilufya Tayali has now formed a new political party (MEDE). His move can only mean three things; 1. He may have seen a real opportunity to be the biggest opposition in 2021 knowing very well that the PF eyes are on the UPND. 2. He may have been sponsored by some ‘clever’ politician from within the PF wanting to create a platform in case of any division at the time the party will be choosing the candidate for the 2021 elections. 3. Tayali may be using very strange spectacles that make him believe he is the best candidate for presidency in 2021. All the same the move he has made makes me understand why some people ask me when I am forming my party even though I always take such comments for jokes. It’s like most of the people who start like Tayali end up with a baby political party, the case of Father Bwalya and indeed Tayali himself among many.

I want believe that he will bring nothing more than confusion to the opposition, but again this is his democratic right and many of us can choose to join him if at all he made sense. He talks quiet a lot and history proves that in Africa those who make the loudest noise end up occupying political office.

My general feeling however, is that now we need the opposition to be strong and ensure that they put the necessary pressure on the PF and president Lungu in order for him and the PF to deliver according to the expectations of the people. No opposition should be silenced by those in power. We must fight democracy and good governance. We will have ourselves to blame if we sleep and allow few individuals to take us at ransom and have their voices heard.

    • Couldn’t you surely write about what we will be doing by 2021? We just voted and all that is on your mind are 2021 elections? No wonder our economy is in this mess. All we care about are elections, after voting we want to go and campaign again. My foot.

    • Edgar and his rubbish government will not even survive until 2021, so better than trying to predict what the political landscape will look like in five years time the opposition should be making plans on how to cope with that.

PF came to power through lies, deception and cheating, their promises on the economy are delusional, and when Zambians are starving and realise this is the result of corruption and stolen elections, that will be the end of PF.

Zambian are not as docile as Zimbabweans.

  1. Who indeed is the author! There is a good reason they write incognito. Why, the article is nothing more than another voice putting on airs of importance when it comes to discerning Zambian political scenes. Firstly, he fails to understand the role of gov’t in controlling mob rule. They fail to acknowledge that UPnD has been unruly and needs strong police action on their stance to cause riots because they ‘do not accept’ the democratically elected President. Secondly, the other opposition that are being touted as potentials are politically suspect, that’s Chipimo(now you see him, now you don’t). Tayali, becoming second largest opposition displacing HH, is premature, chap hasn’t even got started. What is true is that UPND, is a dying Cult. It’s Leadership has been laid bare…

    • …..laid bare to reveal an obsessed central figure that wants Presidency for self aggrandisement and to be worshipped. In fact UPND, would be better off, coming clean and confessing to being a cult AND giving up Political ambitions. They have Mumba the preacher who can lead the worship.

UPND should change its name to the Golden Calf, Exodus 32:4. The Members of the party are tasked in performing ceremonies like ‘The Adoration of the Golden Calf’ (only HH can be Leader, worshiping him).As the Bible teaches, the golden calf was an icon (a cult image) made by the Israelites during Moses’ absence, when he went up to Mount Sinai.

    • It was made of Gold, I believe, something HH worships. “I AM Mammon, your God,” is HH’s message to Zambia.

  2. Mr Author you made your argument on a wrong premise that 2021 will have no incumbent. Edgar Lungu will be on the ballot legally or illegally. The referendum was to be manipulated to provide for Lungu to stand by removing article 79.
Two-third parliamentary voted would have allowed ECL to stand. Before 2021 the referendum may comeback and Lungu has directed his MPs to “fine-tune” the constitution. For me I know what that means.

    • You are as lost as the author, the constitution as it is allows the incumbent president to stand without any amendments. Read article 106 (6):

“(6) If the Vice-President assumes the office of President, in
accordance with clause (5)(a), or a person is elected to the office
of President as a result of an election held in accordance with
clause 5(b), the Vice-President or the President-elect shall serve
for the unexpired term of office and be deemed, for the purposes
      of clause (3)—
      (a) to have served a full term as President if, at the date on
which the President assumed office, at least three years
remain before the date of the next general election; or
      (b) not to have served a term of office as President if, at the
date on which the President assumed office, less than
      three…

  3. Its laughable. Just thinking loudly! Why is it that whoever wants to form a political party must come from the Bembaland? Is it greedy or the Bembas feel they are the only ones hand picked (anointed) to rule Zambia or they feel they are the only ones who can think for the other 72 tribes in Zambia?

  4. That is the problem with Zambian we rely on hearsay and not well researched information before we even take a pen and write things. The author should read the constitution carefully and then he will know that ECL still qualifies to stand in 2021. Failure to read such important document costed the UPND time in the concourt.

    • ELIJAH MUDENDA, MAINZA CHONA, HARRY NKUMBULA, ruled Zambia. HH is not the only one who can rule Zambia in UPND. You guys worship the man like a god…! live your life

    • Without Tongas your would all be eating monkeys and mbeba casava and millet….! Tongas are proud cattle-belt and maize-belt people – SO LIVE WITH IT

    SONTAPO – DUNUNA REVERSE

  7. Dr.mweene if indeed u work at uth u hv signed yo termination letter. It is very easy to trace you. Hw can u say tht.,are u planning to be killing bembas and nsengas? I wil lodge a complaint against you tomoro morning.

  8. THE ONE WHO WROTE THIS ARTICLE IS PURELY A TRIBALIST WHO WANTS TO PUT BEMBA OR EASTERNER TO BE THE MOST SUPERIAL PEOPLE IN ZAMBIA. WHY COMING UP WITH CHIPIMO? GOD HAS ALREADY SEEN THE MISERY OF THE OTHER TRIBES AND HE SHALL INTERVEN IN THIS OPPRESSIVE SITUATION AS WE SEE. DIVIDE AND RULE IS THE REALITY OF PF LEADERSHIP.

  9. IF MUTATI’S STATISTIC AND MATHEMATICS EVIDENTLY AND VISIBLY FIXES THE ECONOMY RESULTING INTO SOME APPRECIABLE INDUSTRIALISATION AND CREATION OF NUMEROUS EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES AND MORE INFRASTRUCTURE- UNDOUBTEDLY, HE WILL BE THE NEXT PRESIDENT. BUT PF MUST FOCUS ON REAL FARMING WITH FARMING MACHINERY (NOT HOES), ESTABLISHING MAJOR FOOD PROCESSING PLANTS TO SUPPLY LOCAL MARKETS AND FOR EXPORT ABROAD AND OVERSEAS, MANUFACTURING OF GOODS USING LOCAL RAW MATERIALS FOR EXPORT AND LOCAL CONSUMPTION, ETC.

  10. It has been proven beyond any shade of doubt that HH loses elections even to new comers. To prove the point he classically lost to Edgar Lungu in 2015 and 2016. So what is the dumb writer talking about? Surely it has been proved beyond reasonable doubt that HH is unelectable. And worse, he shoots himself in the foot at critical times as I have always argued. Just look at the 2016 elections. He had very strong credentials to win the elections in the midst of copper collapse, high prices of food, job retrenchments in the mines, financial crisis, kwacha collapse you name it. And what HH do? He appoints GBM as running mate!!!!! And loses painfully and points fingers at other peopleal and tribe for his loss.
