Veteran coach and ex-Zambia international winger Benjamin “Kawilo” Chilongo has died at the age of 55.
His son Kibrix confirmed to Lusaka Times that Kawilo died on Sunday afternoon at Ndola Central Hospital after an illness.
He was coaching Malanti Chiefs of Swaziland at the time of his death.
“He fell ill two weeks after coming back to Zambia from Swaziland for a coaching training.
Chilongo was first admitted to Roan General Hospital before he was transfered to Ndola on Saturday and we lost him on Sunday,” Kibrix said.
Funeral is at Kawilo’s residence in Luanshya’ Mpatamatu area.
He played for Nkana and Green Buffaloes.
On the local front, Kawilo coached Nkana, Roan United, Red Arrows, Ndola United, National Assembly, Prison Leopards and Kalulushi Modern Stars.
He had coaching stints in Botswana and Swaziland where he won the topflight league title as Mbabane Swallows coach.
Chilongo went back to Swaziland to coach Malanti Chiefs last month.

WELL I NEVER HEARD OF HIM IN ZAMBIAN SOCCER TO BE REFERED TO AS VETERAN?? AND THE SON KIBRIX what name is this ? from swaziland, how can he be named like that? GO WELL BENJAMIN, RIP swaziland is no good place gne to early at 55 when coaching life was just starting
@4 when did you start watching football? Benjamin and his brothers Hoffman and others dominated Zambian football at one point.
I’d have rather Kibrix said, “Dad was first admitted to..”. Maybe it’s the LT editor…!?
Too bad and RIP wheels as we used to call you when you were at your peak at Roan United with the likes of KOKOLE, WADE MUMBA and LUCKY “BUUUBU” BWALYA
