Green Party President Peter Sinkamba has commended President Edgar Lungu for coming out in the open to publicly admit that there is widespread and pervasive corruption within the rank and file of your government, adding that it takes a lot of guts for a man admit a wrong.

Reacting to President Lungu’s comments that he has received reports linking some Ministers to corrupt activities, Mr Sinkamba said that it was really shameful that the corruption in your government was on the increase with impunity.

Below is Mr Sinkamba’s full statement

Congratulations Mr. President for the courage to publicly come out and admit there is widespread and pervasive corruption within the rank and file of your government. It takes a lot guts for a man to admit a wrong.

Million thanks too for pledging to fire some of cabinet ministers soon who are the corrupt lot. It is really shameful that the corruption in your government is on the increase with impunity, and that abatement systems that you have been put in place to stop the rot, such as the Anti-Corruption Commission and Integrity Committees, have been rendered useless.

As you have rightly observed, it is immoral and wicked for any one of your corrupt Ministers to receive huge daily bank deposits in their personal accounts when you have publicly called upon the masses to sacrifice, embrace and endure the austerity measures that your government has triggered into motion since your election into office almost two months ago to resuscitate the shrinking economy.

As the Greens, we totally support your pledge to fire Ministers and other government officials involved in this pervasive gross corruption after you have heard their side of the story. We strongly support that position.

Since you have noted a problem with your investigative wings, we hope that beyond expressing repugnance on daily cash deposits and your threats to fire Ministers, you will go further by unleashing a foreign-led investigation, in collaboration with the Auditor General, to undertake a detailed forensic or State Capture investigation on corruption covering State Institutions and officials to stop the rot. The on-going gross corruption, especially in the pricing system in Zambia is appalling. The gross corruption entrenched within the oil cartel system, for example, is excessively exploitative and gravely hurting the economy.

  1. DECEPTION, DECEPTION, DECEPTION, DECEPTION! LUNGU’S WORDS MEAN NOTHING. LUNGU IS SUPPOSED TO SHOW ACTION BY FIRING THOSE CORRUPT MINISTERS INSTANTLY. WE HAVE ALWAYS DESCRIBED THE LUNGU GOVERNMENT AS A LOOTING, THIEVING AND CORRUPT GOVERNMENT. LUNGU HIMSELF IS A BENEFICIARY OF CORRUPTION. ZAMBIA IS A FALLEN STATE.

    • Sinkamba is there anything to commend someone here? commend him for what? for acknowledging that there is too much corruption among senior government officials? what value does that statement add to our economy? We need actions not mere talks. Ibange sana ba Sinkamba naimwe. He is just fooling us to think he has a serious agenda of fighting corruption but just wait only time will tell.

    • Sikamba also, too much matokwani. Lungu’s statement was hollow because he blamed the ACC as if they were the controllers of govt funds. Corruption and abuse of resources must be stopped at source by having Ministers and civil servants with integrity and professionalism. Not riffraffs who are on a looting spree and then expect ACC to stop the rot. Lungu will never accept wrongdoing, just as he blamed the widow he stole from before his peers in LAZ fingered him.

    • Edgar kind of admitted, but he has never fired any PF/MMD’ minister. Even violent ministers he has to gather a tribunal to spend millions on them. He could just say “Kapyongo, sending thugs in Shangombo to stone helicopters for opposition is pure violence, therefore you’re fired”.
Or in this case he can try out suspending the entire cabinet until the ACC pick up banking files. Unfortunately, the ministers may spill the pots at state House.

    • Edward is angry because the ministers are not taking a ninth to him & keeping a tithe for themselves. They are doing a dununa reverse on him (taking a tithe & keeping a ninth). Instead of threatening to fire them they should be arrested & prosecuted.

    • The president is a lawyer and understands that he cannot fire people based on rumours. Let ACC provide evidence and the president will take action.

    • What a waste of praises! My praise will only come after the man has take action against, not talked about -corruption. Wake up Zambians, stop praising the parrots!

    • You Zambians are very dull. You mean you can’t see that Edgar is just windowdreesing for the IMF?Seriously you think Edgar with the entire government machinery at his disposal does not know what is happening? He has even given you clues about huge deposits and accummulation of assets and now you are praising him.

    • Sinkamba is there anything to commend someone here? commend him for what? for acknowledging that there is too much corruption among senior government officials? what value does that statement add to our economy? We need actions not mere talks. Ibange sana ba Sinkamba naimwe. He is just fooling us to think he has a serious agenda of fighting corruption but just wait only time will tell………

    • Sinkamba my other president is being sarcastic, only a weed smoker like me would understand him. I hear you old wise Sinkamba. Lungu smokes rubbish weed.

    • Fellow countrymen and women do not be cheated that there is anything to the presidents comments regarding corruption! Consider that these comments were made while the IMF mission was in the country and it should raise skepticism for whom they were really made to impress! Peter Sinkamba may have his reasons for thinking that it is courage propelling Lungu to admit corruption and hope for action while many believe it will amount to naught! Yes reports have been received maybe investigated or not and yet to be investigated then action to be taken only time will tell. However of corruption investigations by who on whom for whom and will it be a process with equity? Who doesn’t know that determination of rottenness in fish is examination of its head first!

    • Firstly, there is absolutely no reason for praising Lungu for doing what he is supposed to be doing in the first place. Secondly, acknowledging alone is not enough. Words amount to nothing. Action is what counts. Thirdly, ECL needs to demonstrate that he’s serious by explaining to us where he got the K13million increase in his personal assets in 15 months. Then after that, he needs to have all his ministers, who have sudden increases in bank deposits, investigated, and if found wanting fired and prosecuted. Acknowledging alone impresses no one, and is actually a ploy to hoodwink the gullible. Also if he’s serious about fighting corruption in his cabinet, his government should direct banks to report any minister, or any other government official, who has a sudden increase of cash…

    • (Continue)… in his bank account. And in the future, all ministers should be made to declare their assets at the start of their terms, and also after they are done. Any unexplained increase in wealth should be a sign that a minister has been stealing public funds. Other than that, Zambia will soon acquire the label as the most corrupt nation in Southern Africa. And that, ladies and gentlemen, will be PF and Lungu’s legacy.

    • President Sinkamba seems to be the only opposition leader working. The rest are like PF ministers, after a mockery sworning ceremony, they disappear.

  2. The auditor’s report hasn’t been acted upon. Lungu has said he knows some of his ministers have bank accounts bulging with unexplained sudden money, but he hasn’t taken any action against them. The PF govt operates like a criminal enterprise and their one mission is to bankrupt the economy.

  3. The president said “I hear” and that does not conclude with facts that his ministers are indeed “crafty”. He has various wings of government who are responsible for investigating and then recommend/ act in what ever way consistent with their mandate. We all know the buck stops at the President but at times it is illogical to blame him for everything that is not to YOUR taste.

  4. The President Completely fail the test of a proactive and passionate fighter of this scourge. Making such a very important announcement and warning while swearing in only “some” govt officials takes away the sense of gravity the warning should have conveyed. The President should have called a press conference, address the whole nation and send a warning. The swearing in ceremony is a semi national function. The focus is on the officials being sworn not on the presidents running comments. I am sure no Memo was circulated over the same, just as no action will be taken on those offenders he has gotten a report about! The next time you will hear abt corruption again is at next campaigns!

  5. But Lungu’s dental formula also, in another life he would have been a Crocodylinae nilotica!

  6. Mr. Sinkamba you know how to ADVERTISE your self and attract RELEVANCE… Donald Trump said , being a politician is like being a SALES MAN. So you always need to make a successful deal. No emotions attached. Its just BUSINESS. Good for you Mr. Sinkamba..

  7. Please pray for our outgoing leader HH he has acute fatigue, low libido, stress,bp bordering on depression. We wish him quick recovery as he is on bed rest once ready lets go for the convention

  8. Soon the heads will roll as the President means business and will fire those found wanting however an equal enemy to corruption is govt inefficiency and bureaucracy which often faciltates corruption- reduce inefficiency you automatically cut out the environment conducive for corruption. Office holders should be in their offices to attend to the public, in their absence let someone else stand not a situation where to get your title deed you have to wait for the LandsComissioner when there is a deputy – efficiency is needed!

  9. @ shu shu shu
What evidence are you talking about when investigative wings like police are being threatened by police e.g in choma, police officers at ant money laudering were transfered by the ps because ps is protecting civil servants who have looted funds. psmd transfered the paco who is one of the masterminds but the guy is still being kept by the so called of civil service in the province and ministry of finance is not taking action.Africa will never develop with such mentality.

  10. I think for the first time in a long time, Edgar talked sense. Remember he even said when he proves that the ministers r\that are suspects are truly corrupt, he will fire them even before ACC investigates them. I expect to see some action by the end of next week. Watch this space.

    • Only in your next life! Lungu has just reappointed the ministers with a smattering of new ones this past week. Why did he reappoint the same thieves? Does that make sense?

  11. It cannot be better said than this, Mr Lungu: Zambian politicians vie for Govt positions to serve themselves!

The objective of our governors is not for the purpose of commoneal, public welfare, but virtually all politicians now take politics as commerce! Instead of investing their own resources in industry or agriculture, they have turned politics as the most lucurative business, second to none!

There a need for a paradigm shift from this greed, to common good, which must be the mission of Govt.Comment:

  12. I beginning to like sinkamba for being a knowledgeable and proving to be an adult politician. If he continue like this he will become president before the tribal leader.

  13. he says this while swearing in ministers like its a by the way thing,he should have held a press conference for the sole purpose of talking about corruption

  14. Lungu will not fire anyone for corruption, he was instructed by his God father to put his ministers in cash cow ministries to loot the government coffers. You will never hear anyone fired, MMD is known for corruption that’s why we voted them out.

  15. Yes, but it is easy to see corruption when you were the one who put it there in the first place. Lungu knows all the hiding places.
