LUTEMBWE Dam one water treatment plant which provides 45 percent of the commodity in the border town of Chipata has been decommissioned by Eastern Water and Sewerage Company because the raw water resource holding the dam has completely dried up, company managing director Lytone Kanowa said.

Mr Kanowa said on Sunday that with the prevailing situation where dams in Chipata and Lundazi districts have dried up, the company could to a larger extent achieve customer satisfaction if the water being supplied was not wasted.

He said this was due to the acute weather in which the dams in Chipata and Lundazi have dried up to unexpected levels.

“With the recent delay in rainfall, Eastern Water and Sewerage Company Limited (EWSC) would like to appeal to its esteemed customers and the general public to conserve water till the onset of the rains,” he said.

Mr Kanowa said company remains committed to its mandate of providing water and sanitation services to its customers

He said Lutembwe Dam One in Chipata which has full capacity of holding 1000,000 cubic meters of water but has dried up to an alarming level of approximately 50,000 cubic meters meaning supply water for approximately 12 days.

“The Lundazi Dam in Lundazi which has a holding capacity of 533,000 cubic meters is now at 60,000 cubic meters for approximately 30 days of water supply,” he said

In order to continue having some water supply in Chipata and Lundazi districts, Mr Kanowa said all customers should take maximum caution in the daily water utilization and desist from any activities that lead to excessive use and wastage to ensure the little available water resources was able to last for a longer period of time.

  1. Is it decommissioning or suspension of pumping due to inadequate water? Does the author really know what he is writing about in his title? Don’t alarm the peaceful people of Eastern Province.

  2. I am left to wonder if the LT / author know what decomissioning of a dam means. Common guys use terms you fully understand. Decomissioning a dam means pulling it apart, destroying the wall so that it no longer holds water.

  3. The dam is a wall.
I am sure the writer meant the reservoir. Erecting a wall across a river or a stream creats a reservoir or a lake. The wall that is erected to create a reservoir or a lake is called a dam. For example when you say Kariba dam you actually mean the wall erected at lake Kariba. But if you want to refer to the body of water then it is lake Kariba. Wonder what it means a dam drying up?
