Roan PF Member of Parliament Chishimba Kambwili says there is looming hunger in Zambia following the failure by the Ministry of Agriculture to distribute farming inputs on time.
Dr Kambwili said many households in Zambia will be hit by hunger because Government has failed to manage the Farmer Input Supply Programme (FISP) properly this year.
He said the distribution of seed and fertiliser under the FISP programme has been chaotic in several areas of the country.
Dr Kambwili revealed that all the districts on the Copperbelt Province apart from Masaiti have not received the required full packs under the FISP programme.
“As I am speaking to you, there is tension on the Copperbelt because our farmers have not received their inputs except for those in Masaiti. You find that when some people receive seed, then fertiliser delays. When they receive fertiliser, it comes with no seed and these are farmers who have not been paid their money by FRA so they can’t even buy their own inputs,” Dr Kambwili said.
He added, “Agriculture has got a time limit. This December is time to plant. You can’t tell farmers to wait because time is moving and now farmers are upset.”
He described the e-voucher scheme being piloted by the Ministry of Agriculture as a total failure.
“We need to handle this e-voucher issue properly to avoid hunger next year. Agro suppliers have not been sensitised, farmers have not been sensitised and nobody knows how this works,” Dr Kambwili said.
He stated that the e-voucher project is a good thing which could revolutionize agro input distribution in Zambia if properly implemented.

too much politicking this is the results. After elections we needed government to start working but we were busy petitioning till now. We a lot of time and things are now catching up with us. so lets not blame the ministry of agriculture remember agriculture goes with time following rain pattern if fertilizer and other farming inputs are delayed by one month then you miss it coz it means a farmer will get seed when he needs to apply fertiliser and get fertiliser when he needs to start getting his yield. Lets work with timing not just talking.
