Chipata Municipal Council warns Markeshift restaurant onwers

Share

The Chipata Municipal Council has warned makeshift restaurant owners
to stop trading at the second class trading area known as Down Shops.

Council Public Relations Officer Taonga Kaonga said Wednesday that the
mushrooming restaurants were illegal and the council would move in as
soon possible to demolish them.

Ms Kaonga said it was illegal in Zambia for any person to trade in
food stuff that has not been certified by the health inspectors.

She said the public health inspectors who visited the make shift
restaurants at Down Shops in May this year, warned the traders to stop
trading because they were trading from an undesignated area.

Ms Kaonga said that the restaurants owners have continued to trade in
uncertified food stuffs adding that they do not even have trading
licenses from the local authority.

Over the weekend,  about  10 trading stands near Down Shops in Chipata
were swept away by heavy rains.
The rains also washed away the foot bridge between Kapata Modern
Market and Down Shops.

  1. Is there no way of legitimizing these businesses insetad of rendering these people un-employed? If the land in question is already designated for something else that is understandable, but if the question is just standards and illegal operation, this service is obviously going on because it meets a certain demand in that area. Is it possible to licence these people, tax them, and set standards that they have to live up to or get their licences revoked… Systematizing the operation instead of shutting it down.

  2. Sisters of Mercy, this is very good contribution. Just set standards. It could a source of income for the council. The only problem is that the council does not account for the money they get from markets. It just goes into people’s pockets

  3. Make shifts restaurants are also in Lusaka and the city council does nothing. These makeshifts restaurants are a health hazard as there are not regulated and sell anything
