Labour union against the proposed quashing of maternity leave pay

Share

The Civil Servants and Allied Workers Union (CSAWUZ) in Northern Province says it is against the proposed withholding of salaries for women on maternity leave.

Provincial Secretary Wallace Kasao says the proposed withholding of salaries for women who go on maternity leave discriminates against women’s rights..

Mr. Kasao told ZANIS in Kasama in an interview yesterday that there is a better way of making the women in employment productive rather than punishing them for being pregnant which is their right.

He said as a labour movement in the province they support government’s intention to have a performance based system in the civil service but not withholding of salaries for female employees.

Mr. Kasao said the performance based system will carter for both genders as opposed to the withholding of salaries which only targets women as if they are unproductive.

He noted that the performance based system is better because both male and female employees in the civil service will have to be paid according to their level of performance.

Mr. Kasao argued that some women were better performers in terms of work outputs than their male counterparts adding that the proposed withholding of salaries will disadvantage them greatly.

The union leader stated that child bearing was a right and should not be taken as burden for women who are employed in government and the private sector.

Mr. Kasao added that all those women working in both private and public sectors must be allowed to enjoy their full right of child bearing without any discrimination of any kind.

He noted that women in employment should not be punished for exercising their natural right of child bearing as well as breastfeeding but that they should be tested to prove if they were capable of delivering.

The union leader added that his union will defend the rights in employment in the public sector

Mr. Kasao also urged other unions in the country to stand up against any deliberate policies which are against women’s rights.

    • These are the effects of dununa backwardness under visionless PF bandits of blind Lungu.
Women at UTH are delivering on the filthy floors & now PF bandits want to even confiscate maternity payments from the already poor & marginalised women!?
Dancing dununa regret has landed many people into mwamoneni~to these unfortunate women. Visionless PF bandits~leave the women’s maternity payments alone.

  1. Whoever is thinking like that must be mad, this is backward thinking and is detrimental in modern days. Are they really saying women should stop conceiving just because balabomba? It is a very bad idea and must be condemned at all cost. It is their right to have children so they should not be punished.

  2. Poorly written article. The writer does NOT deserve to be this job as a journalist. He has not been trained well enough to be a communcations agent. He has not given us the background to this story as to why the Unions are against paid maternity leave for our working women. Who ever suggested this is clearly a mental retard and anti-women.

    • @Mwape:
That is the problem with you monkeys! Do a self introspection first and you will realise that you are no better than the journalist and that you are in fact worse at communication.
You start with and I quote “Poorly written article. The writer does NOT deserve to be this job as a journalist”. So you wanted to sound cleverer than you really are but ended up stu.pidly posting an even worse statement? What did you mean when you said “The writer does NOT deserve to be this job as a journalist”.
Foo.lishness begins at your home, AR.se.whore!

    • Chilyata, you sound so hollow and bitter! Are you the author of the article? Even if you are the writer of this poorly articulated document, you have no right to shower blog contributors with insults and name calling.
be civil with all contributors despite their poor grammar they have something to contribute.
YOURS IS INTERNET BULLING, LOUSY AND CRUDE!
Leave pay for maternity leave MUST STAY!

    • In support of the journalist: you people on LT do not pay to access this site. Neither do you advertise on the site. So how does the journalist earn a living other than by quickly posting half baked and badly worded articles and then rushing off to a real job somewhere (maybe selling kapenta?) Just be thankful that your sorry assess have something to read. Otherwise you should be on the Times of Zambia site!

    • @ Chilyata
You are the worst blogger to ever have dirtied this site with your unpalatable language! Someone in a haste just omits an ”IN” and all hell breaks loose in your deranged brain! What’s wrong with your upbringing, did your parents abandon you? Get a life man!

  3. Think of better ways to save money than proposing to disadvantage the women. It’s their right which should be guarded jealously.

    • What is the actual proposed change that the labour unionist is raving against? Isn’t current practice for a 3 month paid maternity leave?Anything longer is unpaid.

  4. We told you about the Drunkard without a vision whom you helped to steal the election. Just look at some of the election rally videos and you will find many PF women with different shapes/types of bums, FAT, Small, planks, etc foo.lishly dancing to Dununa Reverse, courtesy of the murderer and human sacrifices JK!!
Hopefully PF women will still be dancing to Dununa Reverse when their Maternity Pay is stopped. That is how st.upid they are NOT to have known that PF is a party of thieves, scoundrels, thugs and Mother Fuc.kers led by the Chief Drunkard Lungu and the Lord of Corruption Rupiah Banda.

  5. Chilyata, the only word missed in that sentence is “IN”! The sentence should have read,” The whole sentence should have read,”The writer does NOT deserve to be in this job as a journalist.”
I guess the mistake was made due to too many internet outages due to Airtel’s ineptitude! I was really in a rush to maximize the short performance intervals between its ups and downs! I really do not know why ZICTA does not deal with our poor internet services.

  6. Women should not be assessed for their performance during the period they are on maternity leave and it should be indicated as such in Performance Management Contract. However salaries should be paid, loose the benefit of that come with assessment during a given period. For example they may loose performance bonuses as they were not assessed the period they were on leave. Muganiza bwanji imwe bantu?!!!

  7. Withholding of a salary may apply if the woman is yearly going on maternity. But if it is a normal way at least after two years that shouldn’t be the case. If the thinking is that any time if the woman/lady goes on maternity leave the salary should be withheld is NOT a supportive motion!!
