THE Football Association of Zambia and First National Bank (FNB) Zambia have unveiled a three-year K1.5 million sponsorship deal for the Zambia U-20 Men’s National Football Team to run from 2017 to 2019.

Speaking at the Taj Pamodzi Hotel, FNB Chief Financial Officer Ackim Chalwe said the sponsorship deal was a long term commitment by the bank toward the support of the game of football in Zambia.

Chalwe revealed that the negotiations that had gone on for over five months had been catalyzed by the success of the U-20 at the on-going continental youth tournament being hosted in Zambia.

”We are proud to formally announce the official sponsorship of the U-20 team. The sponsorship is worth K1.5 million (USD 150,000.00) over a three year period,” Chalwe said.

“FNB being long term partners and friends of football, our sponsorship is guaranteed for three years and is not in any way tied to the results of any matches the team plays,” he said.

FNB Zambia Limited has 21 branches countrywide and over 60 automated teller machine (ATM) network, as well as FNB Zambia Online and Cellphone Banking ensuring that customers have access to their accounts around the clock.

And FAZ president Andrew Kamanga said the sponsorship to the U-20 will be fitted in the association’s blue print for promoting youth football.

The FAZ president said the sponsorship for the U-20 will help the team prepare for the FIFA World Cup in Korea but most importantly be spread across the country beyond the forthcoming tournament.

He said that the right investment in talent could unearth talents beyond Lusaka and the Copperbelt as seen by the rise of Edward Chilufya from Kasama’s Mpande Youth Academy.

“This money will help us take football development across the country. Like you know, one of the stars of this U-20 national team, Edward Chilufya, is from Kasama,” said the FAZ Chief.

Chilufya scored the goal which sent Zambia into the final of the 2017 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations where they will face Senegal at the National Heroes on Sunday, March 12.

  1. Though a welcome sponsorship, $150K is nothing to right home about for a bank like FNB considering how much they are milking from Zambia. By the way how does this sit with their own Bafana Bafana?

    • @Manga- clearly you are not too bright with numbers. That is enough money to support international games (there are less than 30 international games in 3 years) so it sufficient. FNB are not milking from Zambia, if you borrow you will pay at an interest, if you save you will earn an interest, it is your choice. FNB is not a mine.

    • Thanks FNB though the amount is nothing, its only like $150,000 to run for 3 years?? it can’t even cover the cost of Jerseys, let alone travel expenses, in that period. FAZ should get serious than Rushing to get in to such contracts. They would have advertised to attracted better investment?? Damn sleeping Kamanga..

    • Yes the money is not enough but its a start and this is not the funds used to buy jerseys the jersey manufacturer supplies that both home, away, training jerseys are supplied by them. If the boys win today companies will come knocking.

    • Ok, we are supposed to be grateful for everything, but surely, $50,000 per year for all the publicity that FNB will get from this fantastic U-20 Zambian team is really not enough. This is my salary, mwebantu!

    • I cant agree more. $150K sponsorship from FNB? St. Desperacious……..THIS IS PEANUTS!!! You are clearly not a money man/women. Its $50k per year, what is that? They want to use our team for $150k . Ba Kamanga , we thought you are a business man?

  2. Lusaka Times, in the picture Chief Financial Officer for FNB is Ackim Mwale in the story he is Ackim Chalwe, which is which

  3. @St. Desperacious, I like your line – “…if you borrow you will pay at an interest, if you save you will earn an interest…” And I haven’t regretted saving with FNB. Problem is, people are ever eager to borrow and spend and never keen to save and invest. It’s happening all around me at my work placeand my employer pays a good wage. Worse still, they borrow to drink the money and when nothing is left to show for it as they pay back, they blame it on the bank. What a backward culture! You’re safer not to lend money to a desperate friend, and the banks have noticed this risk, hence the mega interest to mitigate it.

  4. Good work and good intentions of investing in grassroots football by kamanga. Salute.

Unlike one corrupt former administrator who only thought of his pockets.

Zambia is headed for great heights with the right administration. For once I call applaud lungu for not letting kulusha interfere in the running of the beautiful game in zambia.

  5. Carry on the good work FAZ admin and it will not go unoticed especially if you are transparent and accountable in your deals unlike the dark days under the corrupt Galu regime.

  6. How can anyone in their right frame of mind utter despising comments on this welcome development; something we’ve not seen in recent years! How more ungrateful can you be SHUWA! Thumb up FAZ and FNB! Please please soldier on with good works … as they say you’ll only hear needless noise from empty buckets!

  7. WHY IS IT THAT IN ZAMBIA WHEN THE MONEY AMOUNTS TO A MILLION OR MORE USDOLLARS THAT MONEY IS QUOTED IN US CURRENCY AND WHEN IT DOES NOT AMOUNT TO A MILLION OR MORE USDOLLARS BUT IT AMOUNTS TO MILLIONS OR MORE KWACHA (LOCAL CURRENCY), IT IS QUOTED IN THE LOCAL CURRENCY? CAN’T THIS TREND STOP AND QUOTE THE MONEY IN LOCAL CURRENCY?

  8. AND OF COURSE K1.5 million (USD 150K) IS PETTY CASH ESPECIALLY FOR THE BANKS IN ZAMBIA WITH THE HIGHEST INTEREST RATES IN THE REGION OR IS IT IN THE WORLD? THEY SHOULD AT LEAST BE GIVING BACK TO THE YOUTH AND GENERAL PUBLIC THROUGH MANY MORE FUNDINGS TO NEEDIES MUCH MORE THAN THEIR LOOSE CHANGE FROM STOCKING UP THEIR CORPORATE CUPBOARDS OF COFFEE, TEA, SUGAR AND MILK.

  9. NEGOTIATIONS FOR 5 MONTHS ONLY HAVING A RESULT OF 150,000 DOLLAZ MALABISHI , ME I NEGOTIATE THAT MONEY IN FEW MINUTES

  10. NINDALAMA ZA ANYOKO TO WAIT FOR THE FINAL? U CANT READ THAT THE SPONSORSHIP HAS NO CONDITION ON RESULTS, READ BEFORE YOU PUT YOUR HANDS ON THE KEYBOARD, THESE ARE CHAPS WHO JUST SIGN DOCUMENTS WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING THE CONTENTS
