Lumwana Mine is not exporting Uranium, but just stock pilling it-Yaluma

Mines Minister Christopher Yaluma
Mines Minister Christopher Yaluma
Minister of Mines Christopher Yaluma has refuted claims that Lumwana Mine in North Western Province is exporting Uranium.

Mr. Yaluma says Lumwana Mine is only stock piling uranium that the firm is getting as a by-product of Copper.

He says the mining of uranium by Lumwana Mine is strictly monitored by Government regulatory agencies such as the Zambia Environmental Management Agency- ZEMA.

Mr. Yaluma says Lumwana Mine is yet to apply for a uranium license to Government so that the mining of uranium can start at full scale.

He says Government will only authorize the export of uranium once a technical committee of experts is constituted to monitor the mining, export and transportation of uranium.

The Minister has told ZNBC News in Kitwe that Government has since stated the process to appoint a nuclear technology committee to look at uranium mining.

He has further explained that a group of Zambian scientists are currently in Russia undertaking studies on nuclear energy so as to broaden their understanding on subject.

    • I am sure Uranium is being exported without government knowing, GRZ does not even know how much copper i being exported, there is no monitoring.

    • I am sure Uranium is being exported without government knowing, GRZ does not even know how much copper is being exported, there is no monitoring.

    • ZEMA has failed to monitor river pollution in Chingola. How do you expect such an organisation to monitor this harmful and very expensive product?

  1. Comment:the question is how is it stored and in what quantities? these guys have been mining for a long time now how huge is their stock piles?

  2. There are also strict international regulations that have be complied with to avoid the uranium landing in wrong hands.

Anyway, why is this guy speaking for the mines? We shall never diversify with such leadership.

  3. This clown is a misrepresentation of leadership. Lumwana has been exporting uranium for a long time you moron. These trucks leaves the mine at 02 hrs everyday and this copper enriched with uranium ends up at chambeshi mine owned by the Chinese. Sometimes you wonder why we have such people in these sensitive ministries. Yaluma you will go done in history as the most useless and dull minister to have ever graced that ministry. You have cut deals with the owners of these mines and get kickbacks to turn a blind eye on what is happening. How about cobalt mined at KCM and gold that leaves Zambia every fortnight at Kansanshi? Swallow your pride and resign in national interest, misfit.

  4. Interesting: “…apply for a uranium license to Government so that the mining of uranium can start.” Someone educate me please. How is it possible to solely mine a by-product? Next on the Zambian scientists to Russia: You mean the govt has been singing about going nuclear energy yet the country has no scientists with a broadened understanding on subject?” Very dangerous! Let’s drop the nuclear talk because we don’t even have “scientists with a broad understanding of street lights – lights in burma and chilimbula roads have long become white elephants and can’t remember the last time they lit up. It is utopian to expect to be taken to mars by a set of individuals with mindsets of cave-dwellers.

  5. Please please my beloved Zambian people, this is not true. The minister should be one of the people benefiting from the said mineral that’s why he is even becoming a spokes person of the company.

  6. Why cant these regulatory agencies speak for themselves and not this dull corrupt minister? Everything is shambles with him we dont trust him

  7. Reading between the lines with this guy you can rephrase the statement as “I have no idea what is happening so I’m making a statement – the rest is somebody else’s job”. And where is the amazing oil discovery this airbag promised to come “soon”?

  8. Yaluma is not dull as some of you may think, he is a genius ,mind that we are not mandated to insult any one in power we must learn to respect one another this country can be small.
The one you call names may one day be your father in law what would you do!
To me it now appears as if any one who is not in government is an angel and those in power can be called anything is that fair!
Suppose your own father was a president or minister would you call him what you call them!

  9. URANIUM MINING IS SIMPLE JUST LIKE MANY BASE METAL MINERALS IN ZAMBIA. PROCESSING URANIUM FOR THE PRODUCTION OF OF ‘YELLOW CAKE’ WHICH IS THE FEED TO NUCLEAR GRADE URANIUM IS NOT A SIMPLE MATTER (A THING I CAN EASILY DO).
IF THE MINE HAD BEEN PRODUCING THE YELLOW CAKE FROM THE MINED ORE THE FACILITIES CAN BE IDENTIFIED.
GOVT MUST FIRST FIND OUT IF THE MINE IS EXPORTING ANY ORE AS OPPOSED TO STOCK PILLING.
AS FAR AS I KNOW THE MINE ONLY OPERATES A CONCENTRATOR AND SUCH A FACILITY CAN NEVER AND WILL NEVER PRODUCE ANY SALEABLE URANIUM OF DEBATABLE VALUE.

    • You very correct man! Only upnd chaps do insult coz they hardly think before they speak! In short they have SHALLOW minds hence their talkative behaviour!

  10. If you arent exporting it, how are you storing it? This is a highly radiocative mineral so it can affect the whole of Solwezi if not the province. Are The workers protected from the dangerous mineral?
