UPND denies blocking President Lungu’s Motorcade

United party for National Development (UPND) has denied reports that they had blocked the motorcade carrying Republican President Edgar Lungu during the Kuomboka ceremony over the weekend.

In a statement released to the media last night, UPND Spokesperson Charles Kakoma said that UPND President Hakainde Hichilema’s Motorcade would have courteously given way to the motorcade carrying President Lungu had we seen it coming.

Mr Kakoma was reacting to Patriotic Front Deputy Secretary general Mumbi Phiri who has asked the police to give guidance on the crime committed by the opposition UPND in Mongu when they blocked President Edgar Lungu’s Presidential motorcade.

Mrs Phiri said that it was sad that the opposition UPND leadership would endanger the life of President Lungu by obstructing his motorcade.

Mrs Phiri said that it was unfortunate that the UPND resorted to obstruct the way, which she has described as an act of lawlessness.

The PF Deputy Secretary General said that it was important for the opposition to accept defeat because it is clear that the people of Zambia voted for the PF looking at statistics in the last general elections

WE NEVER BLOCKED LUNGU’S MOTORCADE

We would have courteously given way to the motorcade carrying Edgar Lungu had we seen it coming.

Assertions that we opted to drive side by side with the motorcade that was carrying Lungu are not a true reflection of what transpired.

We are a law abiding party and we do understand the rules of road usage.

We cannot put the lives of innocent people in the line of danger over who has the right of way.

As you can see from the pictures, we were driving in a convey of vehicles and without warning we just saw state vehicles overtaking us at a very high speed.

Only when they passed us did we notice that it was Edgar Lungu’s motorcade.

We couldn’t make an abrupt stop considering that we were also in a motorcade.

Doing so would have caused an accident of unimaginable proportions that would have resulted in the injuries or death of some of our members.

We wish to make it clear here that we are not in a childish or petty competition with Edgar Lungu.

We will gladly give way if notified but in this case we were also caught unaware.

As you can see from the pictures we were on the left lane meaning the cars carrying Edgar Lungu were the ones doing the overtaking.

Our vehicles actually slowed down and others even attempted to stop so as to pave way amid the confusion.

None of our vehicles attempted to block the motorcade but instead kept to the left lane giving Edgar Lungu’s motorcade enough space to over take us.

We are just thankful to God that nobody was hurt in the process. We feel the police should have conducted themselves in a professional manner to send an advance party to clear the road to ensure that all road users were guaranteed of a safe passage.

It’s strange that there were no sweeping vehicles or police motor bikes with sirens to warn us there was a motorcade coming behind us.

  1. Zambia Police is another major political party in Zambia and they acted in a partisan manner on this dispute between the Panga Family and the Tonga family.

    • So many ministers and Kanganjas deserve fired, risking Ba Edgar like that shows disrespectful.
      Last paragraph of press release is the justification in HH trial. Why no motor bikes or RTA vehicles to clear way for most important man in land? Why are they not respecting Mr. Lungu?
      And why Edgar’s vehicle was in front, not in middle of motorcade? Are his people being serious? Was it Kaiser advise again on how to conduct politics?
      Fire them Edgar!! Be a man.

    • HH is another attention seeker, a god amongst his blind followers. What a baby, he is. Why compete on the road, why risk his own life and that of others? HH show some maturity by behaving like a father. Lives of others do not matter to you, isn’t? So long you become president some day. Your presidential ambitions have completely blinded you.

    • If HH and GBM had been practising this type of politics under KK’s rule or that of Chiluba, we would not even be talking about them. They would be dead!!! Nowhere in the world do you endanger the life of a sitting President and get away with it. You simply get shot at and life goes on for the rest of the people in the country.     • It doesn’t hurt or make you less of an opposition party by showing respect to the head of state.
      You may have disagreements with PF and the current govt, but your press statement is so packed with blatant and flagrant disregard and disrespect for Edgar Lungu.

      upnd would serve the country well by not engaging in political brinkmanship as they have more to lose.

    • upnd kept to the left, the upnd convoy never went to the other lane to block on coming traffic, they observed road traffic rules diligently, if they had blocked the entire road, then that would have been obstructing other road users. By the way the entire fleet of automobiles in lungu’s motorcade passed through at lightening speed.

    • We expected that denial. UPND is a party of sadists. Time HH accepted reality and moved on. His antics are becoming too boring.

      – High youth unemployment
      – High fuel prices
      – Load-shedding
      – Unaffordable minibus fares
      – High food prices
      – High interest rates
      – High house bond rates
      – Pensions have become virtually nothing
      – Companies are struggling to stay open
      – School fees have increased whilst number of children in classrooms has doubled
      – Imported goods have become ridiculously expensive, that includes medicines.
      – Government needs to pay suppliers & contractors. The Kwacha is strong bcoz govt does not want to print money to pay suppliers & contractors

      These are real issues affecting the poorest of the poor NOT about who is occupying “my” road.

    • This morning I was listening to the breakfast show with Luchi&Roxy on radio phoenix. I’m disappointed with the way these two presenters were promoting hate. While they have a right to their opinion, I think they should have been careful with the responsibility the are bequeathed with by society. The rwandan journalists also claimed right to opinion but we all know the result of that.
      Radio should give fair coverage with all sides of the story told for listeners. Management at radio phoenix should look into this. That’s not what Errol Hickey wanted that station to be. A vehicle of hate.

      All this motorcade malabishi needs to come to an end. What is it for and how does it help the country develop? Lungu should share the road just like any citizen road user.     • HH, just like it was with your delay tactics during the period of your petition hearing, it is a miscalculation to think that if you are arrested the international community will have their attention on you.

      You and your big brother GBM were in cells on the Copperbelt, none of the international community said a word about you.

  18. So 600 police officers were not enough to provide the much needed security during the kuomboka activities??The fault here was with the traffic police officers. They were supposed to clear the route to Lealui or is it Limulunga at least 10 minutes before the Presidential motorcade passed.

    2. one motor cycle with flashing lights to order cars to stop then
    3. police motor cycle escorts before Eagle 1 then
    4. an ambulance in case of Levy Mwanawasa’s motorcade
    UPND disregarded 1,2 and 3 because their HH was on the road. The police ignored him instead of deflating his car.

  31. This was a Planned ambush to assassinate HH by causing a huge accident among the Vehicles in HH’s Convoy. No Police warning, No Motor Bikes,No Sirens etc. Why didnt Lungu’s Security and ZPS order HH’s Motorcade off the Road? The idea was to Bump off HH’s Vehicle off the Road and kill him. We wonder why KZ aborted the Plan? Thugs and Criminals like Kaizer Zulu will cause a Civil War in Zambia. This saga was another way to intimidate and force the Petitioners to recognize Lungu. Lungu’s Motorcade overtook HH’s at high speeds to go to Litunga Palace and block HH and his delegation from entering the Ceremony Venue. The PF ZPS did indeed bar HH from the Ceremony. Lungu did not want focus to shift to the Popular HH but when the Lozis realised their Heroes had been denied entry they walked…

  36. @BJ: Anderson Kambela Mozoka was a pure professional who understood how government works and built the UPND into one of the most organised opposition parties in the region. It’s the reason he stoop as councilor in Bauleni so as to have first hand experience of the grassroots-If he didn’t die, I can assure you he would have become president one day (THAT IS WHY I VOTED FOR HIM IN 2001). Things went bad in the upnd when he bequeathed the mantle of this great party to a novice who had tribal inclinations and thought the presidency was his birthright.   71. Lungu is not god as PF cadres take him. Zambians will respect him as long as he respects them. Zambia has had more than four presidents before Lungu and were all respected because of the respect they accorded Zambians. Very simple and straight forward issue: Either UPND or PF security/intelligence wings should have known a day in advance who is arriving in Mongu on which day, so that one of the Presidents should have arrived a day earlier than the other, to avoid confrontation.   86. Analyzing the situation, I think HH &Co wanted to disrupt the Kuomboka by provoking the police. This would have created a chaotic scene. The government did well not to respond and decided to deal with the matter later.
