Police in Kasama District in Northern province have shot and wounded a suspected dangerous criminal involved in the illegal production of counterfeit banknotes.

ZANIS reports Provincisal Police Commissioner Richard Mweene confirmed the incident  in an interview saying that the incident took place  around 12:00Hours on Friday.

Mr. Mweene named  the suspect as Richard Mwamba Chimwaka of Ndola on the Copperbelt.

He said the suspect was shot at after he attempted to run away despite police firing warning-shots for him to stop.

He said the police had earlier received a tip off from members of the public that Chimwaka allegedly manufacturing some counterfeit banknotes in Kasama’s Newtown area.

The Police Commissioner said the suspect sustained a bullet wound in his right thigh and is currently admitted to Kasama General Hospital where he is receiving treatment.

Mr. Mweene said Chimwaka is believed to be behind the illegal production of counterfeit banknotes which have been circulation within Kasama town.

He also said the suspect is linked to a spate motor vehicle theft, which were recently recorded in Northern Province.

The Police Commissioner has since warned that the police command is equal to the task will not condone criminality in region.

  2. My exact sentiments Njemushi. Can’t the Police run anymore? Or was the suspect running at the speed of light? Why shoot when he was not armed? This is prejudging and punishing somebody for an allegation.
