Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) Esther Mwaata has revealed that 13 bodies out of the 17 victims in the Luangwa accident have been identified and postmortem was conducted yesterday on eight bodies.

She said among the identified, seven are female while six are male and most of the identified victims were based in Eastern Province, one Tanzanian while others were from Copper belt and Lusaka.

Katongo noted that those identified are as follows: Bridget Mutale, Ann Chali both of Lundazi District, Willy Mwanza of Nyimba District, Ian Tembo of Chipata District, Ann Lungu of Nyimba, Agnes Ngoma of Katete, Laston Ngoma of Chipata, Susan Shamilimo, Janet Kasalu of Luanshya, Hassan Munkondya of Lundazi, Paul Ngulube also of Lundazi, Abel Mwakasala, a Tanzanian national and Thokozile Nyirongo of Lusaka’s Zingalume and she has since called on members of the public to continue helping the police identify the remaining bodies.

And the Police spokesperson said the driver of the Kapena Scania bus has been identified as Matomola Mubyana aged 36 of Lusaka’s Zanimuone and will soon be charged with 17 counts of Causing Death by Dangerous Driving.

She said the driver who had initially escaped was apprehended yesterday from Lusaka’s Garden compound around 22:00 hours and he will be taken back to Luangwa District where he will appear in court after being examined by doctors since he is complaining of body pains.

Most of the drivers that have caused such deaths by dangerous driving go Scot free, I have never heard of a driver that has been jailed in recent times for causing death by dangerous driving. Few days later he will be found on the streets of Lusaka again.

Actually there is one driver in Lusaka who was slapped 8 years for careless driving. The driver had last year driven over a police officer, not sure if it was an accident or he tried to escape the authority and in the process ran over a police office causing her serious bodily injuries. However, the cases are many but convictions are very few!

POST MORTEM conducted on 8 bodies How did you identify the 5 bodies to make 13 that have been identified so far? The driver a LOZI man and UPND how does he run away from the scene how possible was that ? We have lost lives due to careless driving and a TANZANIAN national what was he going to do in Eastern province (Were the wise come from- ECL RB) ? From the list of Names its really one zambia one nation therefore let us be united in these trying moments, extend a helping hand to those of you near to homes for the deceased. EMBRACE UNITY as HH remains incacerated

Comment: There are Zambians legally in Tanzania in a variety of regions, such as Geita, Morogoro, Rukwa, Mtwara, Mbeya, etc. Nothing wrong with that.

When Easterners die in numbers you want unity and police also mention of driver appearing in court coz he sounds western. I have never heard of many of such cases the police have taken to court and win. Do you realise later that they are your relatives from the East?
