COACH Beston Chambeshi said the match against Germany was not easy as he hailed Zambia’s historic qualification into the quarterfinals here at the ongoing FIFA Under-20 World Cup finals.

Chambeshi, who become the first coach to lead Zambia into the quarterfinals of this competition, watched on from the touchline as his team came from a goal down to lead 3-1.

Then saw that lead squandered as a determined Germany scored two late goals and earned a 3-3 draw at 90 minutes and forced the tie into extra time.

Shemmy Mayembe gifted Zambia the hard fought qualification in the 106th minute to see the African champions win the intense tie and reach the last eight at the World Cup level for the first time following two failed attempts in 1999 and 2007.

Chambeshi said the tactic was to avoid conceding early because he was aware the Germans would go for an early goal.

“It wasn’t an easy game and especially if you are playing a team like Germany. I am happy with the result and would not want to find any faults at this moment because this was a knockout and you take the result,” he said.

This win also served as revenge for Zambia who suffered a 4-0 annihilation at the hands of Germany on September 25 during the Seoul 1988 Olympics.

Chambeshi said he experienced a lot of pain as a footballer and vowed to become a winner adding that he was happy with his achievements so far.

“Yes I was part of that team that lost badly to Germany and I am happy to be part of this historic event. I suffered a lot as a player and I am glad things are getting better and it’s nice to be part of this winning group,” he said.

Chambeshi said he was happy the players remained resolute after Germany had taken the lead. He said the plan was to hold on till 30 minutes without conceding before pushing for a goal.

“Unfortunately our plan didn’t work but I am happy how the players responded in the second half scoring three goals. And that is not easy when you play a team like Germany that also wants to win. But our tactical approach won us the game,” he said.

Chambeshi also defended midfielder Boyd Musonda who had a bad game following his misplaced passes as well as losing possession easily.

“Yes Boyd has been my anchor man and needed someone like that in such a game because of the Germany team psych, he made some errors but we needed him to contend the taller Germans and in that area he did well,” he said.

Germany coach Guido Streichsbier said his side collapsed in the second half allowing Zambia to score three times before responding late in the game.

Streichsbier said Zambia were worthy winners and wished them well in the remaining games.

“We played a good first half then we lost the rhythm in the second half but we managed to score deep into the game which was good but again we failed to contain the Zambians in extra time. I didn’t have enough players to match Zambia’s system of play,” he said.

He expressed sadness that his team exited the competition but blamed it on poor preparations that saw most players fail to report for camp owing to the play-offs in the league.

“Zambia was today the worthy winner, my boys tried and tried but we just could not match our opponents’ fighting spirit,” he said.

    • Mushota PHD holder respect your friends fathers. Infact your English is even questionable. Its clearly written Beston and you write Bestoni……………which university did you go yto to get your PHD or were you given as an honorary PHD for your dull headedness. This man Beston needs great Kudos for he has lifted the glory of mother Zambia in terms of football standards and he is making headlines every where. Which headline are you making. …………..NONE apart from the fake PHD.

    • Ba Chambeshi learn to respect FiFA officials when celebrating a goal. Even if its Sikazwe officiating, don’t hug them ever again!!!!
      Chambeshi for PF President.

    • “This win also served as revenge for Zambia who suffered a 4-0 annihilation at the hands of Germany on September 25 during the Seoul 1988 Olympics.”

I thought we beat Germany in 1988???

  1. There are few people that have this kind of determination. VENGEANCY !!! The coach has rightly hit the nail on the head.It pained him when Zambia was beaten 4-0 by Germany. If our political leaders can emulate Quick Silver’s way of thinking this country would be a nice one. Get into leadership to change things that pained you for the better not to steal, encourage corruption and tribalism. Hear from Mr H Kalaba Foreign Affairs Minister when he talks, acts and directs. He encourages oneness and UBUNTU.These are the poeople that the nation needs.ADDING VALUE TO WHAT THEY DO & WHAT THEY SAY!!!!!!! It is sad that so far only few people are like so.

    • Boss, the first part of your statement was good but you veered off this track by bringing in Kalaba. Not everyone thinks Kalaba is a good example. Especially with the behaviour this group exhibited after the death of Sata, how they fought democracy just to be where they are now! Leave them out of this. No politics.

    • I agree with you totally @Chikambwili. Kalaba is actually a lost cause a racialist, was he not the one insulting Guy Scott and labeling him a foreigner, when he was just a chancer in PF? Guy scott and Sata worked very well but soon after the demise of the Cobra Guy became a foreigner in the eyes of Kalaba and his co-stupid masquerades.

    • The words
“It’s overwhelming to have grabbed the winning goal. It was always my dream to score for my country and now it’s become a reality. In the previous match, I missed a similar chance, so I was ready for it this time. I just hit it and it went in!” Defender Shemmy Mayembe, who scored his first goal for Zambia in extra time to secure a 4-3 victory over Germany.

  2. Congratulations boys! We are very proud of you. But here is a word of caution to all soccer fans: Just because we have beaten and eliminated the ‘mighty’ Germany from the tournament does not automatically mean we will lift the cup. Remember we lost to underated Costa Rica. Take it easy!

  3. Mr Chambeshi should b allowed to proceed with this Team at u23 level. Continuity is key. Most of Ghanas u20 who won the world cup in 2009 today make up the senior. Depite not winning AFCON they have never left the tournament without reaching the semis.

    • Oooops! Meant to say…Well done boys! Germany is quiet about your triumph…. who cares? You did it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. We know we won but just some advise to Beston, you need to make substitutions when you are leading and the game is coming to the end. Germany made three substitutions and that changed the temple of the game. By making subs you reduce the temple of the game and time is lost through this tactic. Leading by 3 to 1 you could also have deployed all the players at the back and defend the game and play with a lone striker just to frustrate them. Otherwise, thumbs up and good luck in your next game.

    • ABAUME: Thats exactly what I wanted to tell Beston as well. These guys behave as if they do not watch other leagues. SSlow down the game, kill the high temple by making Subs and taking throw ins late or slowly. 3:1 up with six minutes you draw level is very dangerous. Redesign your game plan in the next game. Why plan to hold on for 30 minutes? Not why plan to score within 10 minutes and hold on until half time?

  5. Chambeshi use your allowance to buy yourself a better jacket and don’t celebrate a goal like a four months old baby. learn to stay in your box don’t step outside because you might be give a card.

    • if you have no comments just keep quiet. What has the jacket got to do with his team.Bravo Bestone, we are proud of you and your technical staff, work with them nicely, mwishikulu wakwa shikulu, because they are your anchors.

  6. Mr. Chambeshi I also would like to echo my appreciation for putting Zambia back on the footballing map. Young Chipolopolo you have done the country proud. Match on with even more determination. Continuity is the word and I hope FAZ will ensure that these boys make up the U23 team and eventually the senior team. Politics out of this great achievement of the young Chipolopolo boys.

  7. Sometimes you wonder when Antoine Conte goes ballistic when Chelsea score they call it passion when celebrates he is called names. Weldone Beston against all odds and congrats to the lads for containing a taller more physical and well oiled machine. Yes we here ‘two’ players failed to make camp hence the poor side from Germany so I guess the 9 couldn’t hold the Zambians. Please tell Mangani to concentrate he lapses

    • I agree the second and third goal were due to Mangani`s lapses and Nyondo not effectively moving so that the German strikers get into offside positions.Otherwise exellent game.Forget the excuse of missing 2 players by our opponents

  8. Nyondo too did not concentrate the second goal for Germany was pure negligence of Nyondo, he could have covered for Solomon Sakala but decided to stroll behind him. That is the mistake that Zambia’s defense is facing- failure to react when you needed to make spot on decisions. Defense does not have a killer instinct, it takes time for them to make decisive runs. There was no delaying tactics in that game at 90 minute. Coach train the boys to know how to delay the game when you are leading!

    • We should have killed he game after we scored the 3 rd goal.We should just have stopped playing and park the bus and leave 1 striker upfront, hold the ball at corner flags etc to wind down the time.

  9. In the first half our boys gave too much respect to the Germans and were some what afraid of the big lads from German going by the reputation of German at such tournaments. Our boys need to concentrate from the first whistle and not react when opponents score. From the time this Mangani Banda goalie made that mistake that gifted the Iranians the first goal, the boy is not himself. You can tell from him facial expression that some confidence that he showed against Portugal in first game has evaporated. its high time FAZ thought about psychologists in our game.

  10. Congrats to the lads for believing in yourself. You were not intimidated by the name Germany. You have made us proud and shown us that with the right attitude, nothing is impossible. Thumps up to the coaching bench for moulding the boys into a formidable team to reckon with. My only advise to the coaching bench is that it is not always that you play an open game until the end of the game when you are leading. That almost cost us the game. Consider to start playing defensive football with a few minutes to go. Otherwise you are doing a very good job. Keep it up. We are waiting for the cup.

  11. Well done boys but I don’t have praises for you Chambeshi! Why didn’t you buy some time and make last minute substitutions like managers do in the last few seconds? Don’t you watch football? You could have costed us the match. Next time be smart and kill the game. We didn’t deserve to go through such heart attacks yesterday, shhhhhhaaaaa!!!!!

  12. Germany coach Guido Streichsbier said: “… I didn’t have enough players to match Zambia’s system of play,”. Thanks to our Zambian Coach who employed what the Germany coach called, “Zambia’s system”. This should convince us that we do not need foreign coaches and spend colossal amounts of money to maintain them. Take care of our coaches to develop “Zambia’s system”. Praise be to God!

  13. My advice to our lovely coach Beston is to learn some game management tactics. When you are leading with two goals and there are few minutes remaining you do not give the ball to opponents. Why should you panic as if you are the one who is down? Do some unnecessary subs or even tell the boys to hold on to the ball like we see people going for the corner section of the opponent. We would have been very disappointed because we almost gave away a good game to the Germans. Otherwise ni Go Zambia! Go Zambia! and congrats for the milestone

    • Pa Zed, all are coaches. What if, even after making substitutions of strikers Germany equalized anyway? then you have difficulties going forward. Football is for the strong, whether you like it or not, moments anxieties will be there. That is what makes it exciting. Congratulations boys and glad it was our day

  14. I hope Chambeshi has leaned something from this win that almost slipped away. what i mean is that when u have an option of substituting in the last minutes of of the game while leading, lets do that. that is called tactical time delay.

  15. The match is never won until after the final whistle. Leading 3:1 in the 89th minute and then allowing two quick goals by the opponent speaks volumes that the boys had momentarily relaxed, take a nap and let go the fight before the final whistle.

  16. Why even getting angry about what the commentator said about Zambia, is it not what you have been portraying to the outside world on online, twitter etc. that commentator has never been here if he had been he wouldn’t have said that but because of you who thinks by bad mouthing your country you are champions, those are the results my fellow Zambians learn to protect our country no matter how one may annoy you.
Congratulations boys and the entire group not forgetting Mr. Chambeshi.

  17. mushota I like u after reading u sign off that’s a gud one keep it up.u are a soccer fan I can tell prople don’t insult him .that’s the way he jokes

  18. I have read all the comments here-Some very negative and some with wisdom-But let me remind and clarify every Zambian on this forum-None has praised God for Zambians winning streaks and even understanding God’s way of doing things. The Under 20 National team pray before any match and even go as far as worshipping God in the closets glorifying God for each game they played. The one giving them the scoring abilities to score goals, strength, courage,to be one minded in heart and in spirit osGod through the Holy Spirit-You do not know that ALL what has been happening is because of Jesus and the prayers Zambians have been offering to God. Angels are always guarding the goal post of Zambia and when goals go in that means God is calling for prayers immediately to intervene in the situation…

  19. This guy called Mushota there is nothing positive about him he always comments negative what’s wrong with him.

  20. Ba chambeshi learn to manage games,,,,i couldn’t believe when we were 3:2 up with a minute to go,, Beston couldn’t kill off the game with a mere substitution tactic.

  21. Good job…Faz when you have a new kit sponsor its important you take new photos of everyone including the coaching staff in them and redistribute to the media.
Wake up and add sponsors to training kit!!

  22. Hats off for this Germany coach who has conceded defeat by explaining that his team could not match Junior Chipolopolo fighting spirit.
