OVER 220 local and foreign delegates are expected to participate at the 6th Zambia Alternative Mining Indaba (ZAMI) this week, to provide a forum for various stakeholders to discuss practical solutions to challenges faced by the extractive industries.

ZAMI will be held from June 20 to 22, 2017 under the theme ‘Mineral development for all: Leaving no one behind’.

Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection (JCTR) executive director Leonard Chiti said the main goal for the indaba is to create a platform for communities, governments, civil society organisations (CSOs) and mining companies to effectively deliberate on real- life experiences of the costs and benefits of extractive industries.

Father Chiti said at a press briefing on Friday that the platform will enable stakeholders to discuss how they can contribute to the sustainable development of the country.

“ZAMI will gather leading civil society members and experts from within Zambia, the southern and central African region, as well as international experts to learn and share about the development in the extractive sector in Zambia and beyond.

“It will also draw from the experiences of other countries in ensuring that mining adequately contributes to sustainable development without violating human rights and disempowering communities living in mining areas and destroying the environment,” he said.

Father Chiti said the indaba is also a forum for a variety of stakeholders to effectively deliberate on experiences of communities through testimonies and how Government, mining companies and CSOs can respond to them.

He said the combination of experts and stakeholders will create an environment where useful information will be shared for the development of specific recommendations.

He further said the indaba will set a precedent for how CSOs, mining companies and Government can inform management of the extractive sector for sustainable development.

  1. Father Lenard Chiti, I love you for this. You are always steadfast and focused. Keep the fire burning. We need our $1.4b. This what Catholic Church is known for. Not dividing the nation for a piece of silver

  2. This father is fake. We know this. JUst because ZIMEC is being held this week he proposes the same.

Lets see what happens is ZIMEC is postponed. They will also postpone theirs.

This is all fake. Fake Fathers with Fake followers!!!!

  3. Is this man not one of the sell-out fathers? He used to be a very serious advocate of good governance until last elections when he was given some bone to chew. He has been chewing the bone until now.

  4. I am really interested in the following:
    1.civil society organizations involved
    2. Mining companies involved
    3. experts from within Zambia, does he mean intellectuals or experienced hands on experts who have seen it all happening.
There is intense discrimination in the mining industry. There is a lot of tax evasion in the mining industry. There is a lot of labour discriminations etc. etc.
“effectively deliberate on experiences of communities through testimonies.” Father get testimonies from people working in these so called Zambian Mines.
