COMESA election Observers enter kenya’s country side to monitor today’s polls

Kenyan’s goes to polls to elect a president

COMESA Elections Observers’ teams left the Kenya capital for the countryside where they will observe polling in 29 out of the 47 counties in tomorrow’s General Elections.

COMESA Secretary General Sindiso Ngwenya who was in Nairobi flagged-off the teams representing 10 out of the 19 COMESA Member States. These include Zambia, Malawi, Egypt, D R Congo Eritrea, Libya, Burundi, Sudan, Rwanda and Zimbabwe as well as staff from the COMESA Secretariat.

The teams will observe polling in the following regions of Kenya: Coast, Eastern, Central, Western, Rift Valley, Nyanza and Nairobi.

Former Zimbabwe Minister of Justice, Ambassador Simbi Mubako is leading the observer Mission and will be based in Nairobi County.

The COMESA Mission is observing the various stages of voting, vote counting and declaration of election results. Shortly after election day, the Mission will converge in the Capital to issue a preliminary statement of its findings, and later present a final report with recommendations for improvement of future electoral practices in Kenya.

Before the deployment to the regions, the observers met key electoral stakeholders to understand their level of preparedness as well as the political environment. These included the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), political parties, civil society, government agencies among others.

Kenyans are  today holding its presidential elections.

President Uhuru Kenyatta, 55, is seeking a second and final five-year term in office and faces stiff competition from an opposition coalition led by veteran politician Raila Odinga.

Odinga, 72, is running for the presidency for the fourth time.

  1. useless observers; they did let us down in Zambia and they will do the same in Kenya; they are just going for their allowances;

  2. Election observers are supposed to be there two to three months in advance to monitor the campaigns, free press, violence before the voting date etc. Not the day of voting.
