Following our brief meeting with the incarcerated President Hakainde Hichilema at Mukobeko High Security Facility in Kabwe on Thursday this week, it is extremely delighting to note that the UPND leader is unequivocally committed to the reforms proposed by Commonwealth Secretary General Patricia Scotland which will be anchored on values and aspirations of peace and harmony as set out in the Commonwealth Charter.

Mr. Hichilema also expressed commitment to a process of multi-stakeholder dialogue, which will be facilitated through the office of the Commonwealth Secretary General, to ensure an effective framework for good governance and the rule of law is put in place prior to 2021 elections.

As the Green Party, we are very delighted with this commitment and hope that treason case will be done away expeditiously so that the implementation of the roadmap commences the soonest.

In this regard, we call upon both the prosecution and the defence teams not to waste time on pointless preliminary applications when the trial commences on Monday, 14 August. Both teams have had more than four months to prepare for this case. Therefore, purposeless delays should be avoided so that we get this case done away as soon as possible.

    • The reforms that tells Lungu to respect the rule of law. The reforms that allows people to assemble and campaign freely. The reforms that tells Lungu to Respect divergent views. The forms basically for PF to be exorcised from demonic influence.

    • Lungu is allergic of those reforms. He is agreeing now but by 2019, you will see Chagwa refusing to adhere to reforms of the ECZ, Concourt, Police etc. Lungu cant survive where there’s rule of law. he thrives where there’s criminality. Before elections, Lungu will refuse to refuse and go for elections with the same systems and be declared winner by a useless concourt judgement again. then he will say he is ready to adhere to reforms. This is the same thing that happens in Uganda, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, Burundi etc. That is why I am not optimistic about the so called commonwealth roadmap.

    • Reforms that should reduce Presidential powers, and have an independent Committee to appoint IGs, PSs to avoid Party alliances. The appointment of cadres who know nothing in to strategic positions should stop. No more nepotism as all Zambians should be given a fair chance. Disgusting to see the nonsense PF have brought to our country.

  1. I trust HH but I have some doubts that Lungu and his Criminal Advisers will play ball. Already Lungu is manipulating HH’s Treason Trial from an Open Court into a Secret Trial. Anybody who trusts Edgar Lungu does so at his own Peril. The Commonwealth SG is giving Lungu the Benefit of the doubt but she will soon find out how untrustworthy Edgar Lungu is. SADC,Zuma and Commonwealth SG will need exert maximum pressure for Dictator and Sadist Lungu to play ball. Time will tell!!

  2. @4: Sharon, you must be ignorant. Over the 240 year course of United States history, 12 Presidents smoked weed. George Washington, the 1st President was himself a hemp farmer. Thomas Jefferson the 3rd President also farmed and sold hemp. James Madison the 4th President, also known as the “Father of the Constitution” claimed hemp gave him the insight to create a new democratic nation. Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George Bush Senior, George Bush Junior, Bill Clinton and Barrack Obama all confessed to smoking weed. What nonsense is this to argu any person who smokes weed is not fit to be president?

  3. We dont need roadmaps Chiluba beat Kaunda at his own game with hios own rules and Sata beat MMD Banda at his own game with his own rules. So why is HH failing and asking for external help? He should just continue to spread his party to other areas and when time comes he might win like the others have done in the past. The system or the rules have never stopped us from changing long serving governments (UNIP 27yrs/ MMD 20 yrs) when ever we were convinced of the merits of the new proposition on the table. If UPND fails it to dislodge a 5 year government it should not blame the rules. Just convince the Zambians and you will see that those rules never hindered any one from beating the encumbant. JUST BE MEN!
