The opposition Republican Progressive Party (RPP) has called on President Edgar Chagwa Lungu to instruct the Lusaka High Court to put incarcerated United Party for National Development (UPND) leader Hakainde Hichilema under house arrest as a key step towards reconciliation.

In an interview, RPP President James Lukuku said the efforts made by Commonwealth Secretary General Patricia Scotland, former Nigerian President Olusegan Obasanjo and the three church mother bodies in Zambia to facilitate constructive dialogue can prove futile if Mr. Hichilema continues to be behind bars.

“President Edgar Chagwa Lungu to instruct the Lusaka High Court to put incarcerated United Party for National Development (UPND) leader Hakainde Hichilema under house arrest as a key step towards reconciliation” he said

And Republican Progressive Party (RPP) president Lukuku has implored Government, the Zambia Police Service and the judiciary to conduct thorough investigations on charges leveled against political figures before arresting and subsequently detaining them.

Lukuku was reacting to the recent series of acquittals involving opposition politicians which he termed as ‘politically motivated’.

“Government, the Zambia Police Service and the judiciary to conduct thorough investigations on charges leveled against political figures before arresting and subsequently detaining them’ Lukuku said

Last week former Patriotic Front (PF) Kafue Member of Parliament Obvious Mwaliteta was acquitted by the Lusaka High Court of an aggravated robbery charge with his co-accused persons after the State failed to provide evidence and today United Party for National Development (UPND) vice president Dr. Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba has been acquitted of a charge of assaulting a trader at Kitwe’s Chisokone Market and maliciously damaging goods worth K490 last year in May.

    • Ecl is the wrong person to do that. Appeal to the court to do that not the president. It’s against the rule of law and separation of powers fit the president to intervene in judicial matters.

    • IS THIS COMING FROM A POLITICAL PARTY LEADER?; “The opposition Republican Progressive Party (RPP) has called on President Edgar Chagwa Lungu to instruct the Lusaka High Court to put incarcerated United Party for National Development (UPND) leader Hakainde Hichilema under house arrest as a key step towards reconciliation.” HOW CAN THE PRESIDENT INSTRUCT HIGH COURT? WE HAVE TOO MANY MEDIOCRE PLITICIANS IN ZAMBIA

    • Opposition leader is that what u want to be doing when you get into government? instructing the judicially?

    • Leave that to the lawyers to argue it out in court. It’s possible he can be put under house arrest but it’s not in the president’s power. It lies with the courts. I support the idea.

    • Yes better he is put under house arrest I agree but why haven’t his own Party UPND put in that request? Why should it take another party to voice this out? UPND have really failed as an opposition party, I’m sure even HH has seen that his party is made up of opportunists! You UPND chaps have been a big dissapointment to yourselves and to your own boss HH, you have let HH down terribly!

    • RPP President James Lukuku~Ni HH wanyoko?

Let the courts(judiciary)do their work independently from visionless Lungu & PF executives bandits.

This James Lukuku maybe is urging Jonathan Lungu interfering with the judiciary to FORCE his dictatorial self on the PFudiciary, PFourts & PFudges.
What house arrest when HH is an innocent man persecuted by PF bandits over a traffic jam issue.
Just let the presidential petition be heard after Lungu gives power to the speaker with regards to the constitution.

    • What crime did he commit for the House arrest? Lungu should be the one under house arrest as he is abusing his presidential powers by controlling the justice system.

  1. The 50%+1 who voted for Ecl would love that hh be jailed in a public toilet and you are talking of house arrest. Pf means power to the people and if wanted we can push for that to happen.

  2. It appears Some People don’t understand themselves. How can you ask The President to act in that manner as he is the Judiciary. Its the same people who will again condemn the president of interfering with Judicial process. Its better sometimes to keep quiet if at all you don`t have anything to say.

  3. Lukaku my fellow mtendere dweller, you are still there in mtendere right? From Chamba life to political life,God help Zambia.Just weigh his analysis full errors and calling yourself….what upp?

    • @P you are right! Ba leader ba mafi fye! Ati UPP leader! Amafi yekayeka mumutwe. It’s dagga at work in this Lukuku chap!!!

  4. The call by dim.wit Lukuku does not hold water, HH deserves neither prison or house arrest. Let due process of the law take place. He should be released if found with no case to answer

  5. I voted for ECL but it doesn’t mean I love him or I hate HH, ECL has shown his true colours of bringing back corrupt MMD we kicked out in 2011 the wind of change is finally here we just have to vote for HH not because he’s the best but coz PF/MMD shud go

    • Look closely in upnd and you will see a big junk of mmd mps and members there also. Some are even advisor to the leader while the other is a running mate.

  6. Lukuku should have advised UPND lawyers to apply to the courts and not the President.By doing so and being an opposition leader,Luluku has exposed his depth of ignorance about the separation of powers(grade 8 civics subject).By the way does he have followers?

  7. HH is a free man now! How disappointing! I was looking forward to see the evidence the state had, now we can only speculate. Its like someone can now just put you behind bars, keep you in there for months and when its time to account, just enter a NOLLE!!!

  8. lukuku you are not well in your head that you shod admit it. just How special do you think HH is for you to ask The President to act in that manner as he is the Judiciary? Let due process of the law take place. He should be released if found with no case to answer. the UPND lawyers are the ones to apply to the courts and not the President. go back to school if you cant understand the powers of the president you fu.

  9. No he doesn’t deserve to either be in prison or on house arest is he not a free man, that he has pleaded not guilty .
Indeed there is no case to answer but the problem is how he got where he is now . Yes indeed you cannot be imprisoned without conviction the reason we have all those learned lawyers we are in a civilised world .
What I dont know is those lawyers have proved in effective towards the release of the innocent person .
This world can have nukes not easy to turn these are all symantics that keep the pollitician behind bars .

  10. @HH Oval Head; everyone know that Lungu is the one directing the long imprisonment; so he should release HH;

    • If its ecl as you have put it then you shouldn’t even expect hh to be released. Because ecl instructs the judiciary then let him tell them to lock hh indefinitely. What if hh gets aquitted are you going to say the judiciary disobeyed the the instructions from the president. You live in aussie and you can’t see how dull and ignorant you are at law.

  11. WHY ARE YOU NOT REPORTING ON THE RELEASE OF HH ???? I NOW KNOW THAT YOU ARE NO LONGER AND INDEPENDENT NEWS SIGHT YOU ARE NOW A POLITICAL TOOL !

  12. Absolute abuse of power! I was waiting to see Keith Mweemba grill the State witnesses. They have been saved from further embarrassment

  13. Please do you hate HH that much that you want him back under arrest lets move forward look at the broken constitution, our electoral commission, the constitutional court and even the leadership of the police service; let us come up with things that are positive and not always fueling tension lets stop burning public property and lift article 31, stop saying arrest me; prison is not a good place to be…
