City of Refuge Ministries Overseer Pastor Kangwa Chileshe says police have now allowed him to hold a thanksgiving ceremony on the day of his choice.
This follows the move by police yesterday to block the thanksgiving prayers at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross for UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema following his release from prison.
Pastor Chileshe told QTV News that police canceled yesterday’s thanksgiving ceremony on the basis that he did not get a police permit to organize such a gathering.
He said following his summoning by the Lusaka province Police Command yesterday, he was told that he needed to write to the Ministry of Religious Affairs notifying the Minister of the event.
Pastor Chileshe, however, argues that in his twenty years of ministering, he has never been stopped by authorities on the pretext that he did not get a police permit.
Pastor Chileshe explained that when he attempted to enter the premises of the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, he was denied entry by the police.
He says he was later in the day called back by Lusaka Province Police Commissioner Nelson Phiri informing him that National Guidance and Religious Affairs Minister Reverend Godfridah Sumaili had given the go ahead for the prayers on the day of his choice.
Pastor Chileshe has since stated that he will communicate the new date on which the prayers will be held.

The pastor should not pretend. He is very much aware that with the introduction of the ministry of religious affairs. Any church invent of this size including crusades should be registered with the ministry. The ministry then informs the police about the event. He is a pastor so he should be up to date with the law esp regarding his area. Our small church recently organized a crusade and that is what we did. Nothing polical here please.

HH should go to any Adventist church and worship the Lord in truth and spirit. Genuine prayers should not be politicised. It is the ardent prayers that are answers. Other politician who are not catholics know that God is not only in the cathedral but also in other churches. Catholic members are many and when someone is invited for prayer meetings , he does not see them as christians but perceives them as potential voters or a vehicle to take him to plot one

The requirement to get permission from a government minister to pray is bad law, if at all it is now law. These are the laws that bring unnecessary tension and acrimony in the land. Why bring such a law now, what are they afraid of?
In reality this is a political gathering – who do you think you can cheat that it is a thanksgiving for a politician? Where in Zambia’s history did we have such?

Pastor Chileshe later releases the tape of his recording of his discussion with Police Commissioner Phiri on social media. It is all over. What was the intention to embarrass Phiri? How do you work with people like this, who think everything is a joke? Phiri was only doing his work. Does UPND if it will ever come into power have a police service that has no discipline? Pastor Chileshe should be thankful that he was allowed to go ahead with his celebration of HH release from prison. What he is planning can hardly be called a church service. In a multi party system police have a tough job to undertake. I hope people like pastor Chileshe understand that.

Allow HH to even hold Rallies .Let all those who have time and those who dont have better things to do attend, Give him enough rope to hang himself. Let him however follow the law. There is nothing wrong notifying the authorities about holding the Thanks giving service for HH’s release from prison. Its as simple as that follow the procedures and avoid breaking the law. Its Mwikala Pa Lalala. Why do people don’t read the situation on the ground. Ba Pastor don’t forget article 31 (Declaration of State of Emergency) is still active. We are a country of laws and let us follow the law.
