Opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema says he has forgiven all those that plotted his brutal arrest and incarceration for over four months.

Addressing thousands of worshippers during a thanksgiving prayer service held at the Anglican Cathedral of the Holy Cross to thank God for his release, Mr Hichilema said he will not seek revenge against his political enemies who took him to jail along with five of his supporters.

Mr Hichilema said he did not harbour hatred against the authorities after he was brutally arrested in April.

“Despite the injustices that we went through, we harbour no hatred and we do hereby forgive… all,” he said.

“And there are many who were involved in our brutal arrest and subsequent detention,” Mr Hichilema told a cheerful crowd.

“We are Christians and it is therefore imperative that we love one another. We should not be paying evil for evil. We should strive to live at peace with all men,” he said.

Mr Hichilema also called on his supporters and Zambians at large to put aside all the hate they might have over what transpired in the recent past for the sake of unity.

“On our part, we have been very consistent in our messages that we habour no grudges nor hatred against anyone despite the dehumanising ordeal we went through from the time of the brutal attacks at our residence in Lusaka to the time of incarceration in various detention centres in the country,” he said.

“We are not bitter, and like the Bible teaches us, from deep down our hearts, we have truly forgiven all those who issued instructions that we should be brutally arrested and those who carried out the instruction. We don’t wish them to go through what we went through. We wouldn’t wish them that. If we did that, it means we are no different from them. We will be better qualified ourselves not to do what they did. We should not continue with this vindictiveness and hatred in our country.”

He added, “We seek love and unity in the country based on respect for the rule of law and respect for institutions of governance which is key to economic development.

He declared that he is ready for genuine dialogue and reconciliation that will see unity prevail in the nation.

The UPND leader says he believes that his incarceration was for a purpose adding that his incarceration has strengthened his vision for a free and prosperous Zambia.

Mr. Hichilema adds that Zambia needs to observe fair justice, human rights and the rule of law.

He also thanked both local and international leaders who tirelessly supported him during the time he was in prison.

    • Very welcome message from HH but he too must also ask for forgiveness for some of the very bad things he said to the President, he should apologise for the insults some of his followers have been saying and the acts of violence they have committed.

However this is a good move in the right direction!

      One Zambia One Nation!

    • Sometimes it’s just enough to say A without adding B.
In this case, it’s simply “good move in the right direction” and “Great gesture and Fair Enough”.

HH, that is great and exhibiting leadership for taking the first step, we applaud you.

    • It is an induced forgiveness. He should have first confessed his wrong doings and forgive. But from the look of things he is still claiming innocent. You cant masquerade as President and the law is watching you. YOU HAVE TAKEN YOURSELF EVEN FURTHER FROM PLOT ONE. By the way those are NOT Senior Citizens but TONGAS

    • Forgiving someone who hasn’t asked for forgiveness is NOT Christian. There’s no guarantee that lungu won’t cage HH again as he hasn’t repented.

      – KK was forgiven for his 27 years One party dictatorship rule, that’s why lungu & PF00Ls feel they can take us backwards
      – FTJ was forgiven for theft thats why PF00Ls today continue stealing thru road contracts & other tenders
      – RB & sons were forgiven for grand theft & corruption
      – lungu & PF have looted the country whilst indebting our nation to $31BILLION, they’ve rigged elections, rap.ed the judiciary yet President HH feels they need to be forgiven.

      I disagree. Justice must prevail.

    • HH says he forgives those who encaserated him; it that mind almost sound good.

But wait a minute, did HH admit having committed any wrong?

Did HH acknowledge any offense or mistake that he committed?

Or does HH consider himself to have been a perfect man who was brutally mistreated by others?

As long as HH does not realise that at least he needs to apologize for the offence that was seen by the whole world, of blocking the presidential motorcade, serious people will not take any of his word seriously.

Instead of doing introspection he is busy finding flights in others and pronouncing ‘forginess’.

He goes in church and says ‘Lord me am Holy, I am not like those others who offended me; I hereby forgive them all’, instead of looking at his own stand with God and asking…

    • He goes in church and says ‘Lord me am Holy, I am not like those others who offended me; I hereby forgive them all’, instead of looking at his own stand with God and asking for forgiveness.

How can you disown government and say you are righteous person who needs no forgiveness, but that others who are sinners need forgiveness?

Yes, when you forgive others then you also will be forgiven – but you must confess your sins too, not concealing them.

    • @Advice!

“….at least he needs to apologize for the offence that was seen by the whole world,….”

You got it wrong. HH didn’t commit any crime. The state couldn’t prove wrong doing. Please understand that HH was incarcerated by a cruel and very vindictive evil dictator just to show HH that he has power to do anything. That was all it was about.

    • And you wonder why everything is a mess in Zambia with Justice system…when he came out of prison he stated he will push for reforms, now he consults religious folk and colonists they tell him to forget about it….pretend you were on holiday…its the same cycle from KK era.
When these UPND fooools going to wake up…you have MPs in Parley push for reforms of Police, Corrections and Justice Dept. Reduce the salaries of MPs…

    • We hope HH can also find peace with Namwala victims of UPND instigated violence as well as City Market marketeers who have suffered their own fair share of injustice at the hands of UPND instigated arson. We know these were fires set by ex-commandos on the instructions of the UPND leadership. As we speak, these arsonists have already been nabbed and we await the next course of action in the courts of law. It is not just enough for HH to cry over the injustice he and his henchmen suffered. He should also think about the injustice suffered by others at the hands of the UPND.

    • Just an observation not related to this topic

Mushota has not been commenting in the last few days. Nubian Princess was not commenting as well.
      What a coincidence?

      Mushota = Nubian Princess
Anyone, one can also tell from the type of comments. PhD with two faces.

    • HH claims to be Seventh Day Adventist. Why weren’t his prayers held at an adventist church? Is it becausee they don’t know him? This free mason.

    • So even the church is divided. we have pastors for opposition and pastors for ruling party. I have never seen this group of pastors on state functions.

    • @ 1.9 Wantanshi,

So you believe that your so called cruel dictator instructed HH to block his motorcade, and HH obeyed.

Then later the ‘cruel dictator’ turned and took HH to task?

Then HH is so easy to manipulate. If I were him I would not fall into the ideas offered to me by the ‘cruel dictator’.

Where is my own thinking and reasoning if I will come out and claim that my bad actions were as a result of the ‘cruel dictator’.

    • WHO IS SUPPOSED TO FORGIVE WHO- HH OR THE NATION? THE ARREST OF HH WAS IN THE INTEREST OF ZAMBIA. SO HAS HH FORGIVEN ZAMBIANS (THE MAJORITY, ANYWAY) WHO WAS ARRESTED FOR THE SAKE OF PEACE IN ZAMBIA. OR, ISN’T THE ZAMBIANS WHO ARE SUPPOSED TO SAY SUCH WORDS. IT SEEMS HH HAS COME BACK STILL WITH HIS BITTERNESS AND HATE OF CONTINUOUSLY LOSING ELECTION THE DONKEY KNOWS FOR HOW MANY YEARS. ZAMBIANS NEED HUMBLE LEADERS AND NOT ARROGANT LEADERS.

  1. Now declare and publicly recognise President Lungu and people will believe you. Emotions during the thanks giving prayers must not be translated into reality but actions will prove it.
Further begin working with Government to provide the needed solutions to our country. Remember that’s what constitutes patriotism and servantship.

  2. Mumbi Phiri and kaizer have been forgiven,, I hope my friend @Nostradamus will forgive them also for grabbing his plot next to uncle mwenye musenge ‘s bus station

  3. The next hothead leader to be detained is Kenya’s Raila Odinga.Hopefully HH has been born again politically after his ordeal.

  4. As for Mumbi Phiri, she is not forgiven! She must first go to Kambwili for him to check and grab her genitalia and lock it up with “runyoka” to ensure that Jonathan stops messing around with aPhiri’s vile rotten p.ussy!

  5. Instead of forgiving them you should be thanking them for arresting u because had it not been for they arrest, your political career could have been tarnished by your own upnd members.

U really wanted a way to stay in power after that painful defeat u went through.

Now command your upnd party to go to a conversation.

  6. Comment:it is only in Zambia where a person who wanted to harm The Head of State expects sympathy from people…this conical headed brat shld should apologise to President Lungu in particular and Zambians in general for what he did in Mongu…Shameless

  7. Ba Lsk Times can you please remove the comments from this Rwandan Hutu troll calling itself Amani Mahoro…that comment has nothing to do with the subject matter of this article.

  8. SO Ba Richard Sakala could be right that GBM was evacuated to SA and he is ailing and could die soon. GBM likes showmanship. If he was around , we could have seen in in all the pictures at this prayer meeting. I hope ZWD start addressing him as Ailing Vice President GBM because if he was in PF that is how all UPND cadres would have been calling him by now

  9. 1.Underfive reciting forgiveness as instructed by the pastor. You can still see the inborn hatred by this infant. I think we should wait until.he completes his vaccinations for whooping cough and measles.
2.How can you say you have forgiven “all who instructed and incarcerated us on trumped up charges” when all we know is that you were nolle-d and not acquitted for a serious offence?
3.The boy quotes the Bible but makes no apologies from himself for his transgressions against others and the people of Zambia- clearly a coached recital, I would rather we continue to watch underfive and keep his place in that correction centre.
4.And by the way, didn’t we hear from his lawyers in Luanshya court the other day that underfive was off sick for five days?

    Zambians don’t duped,…

  10. Zambians don’t be duped, UPNDonkeys are still very muvh the donkeys that you have for the past one year, they will still sabotage and arson and insult and block motorcades. No change.
For me there must be an apology and it must start from the day underfive was (s)elected to replace Andy Mazoka on “trumped” up basis.

  11. He plotted his arrest and has forgiven himself.
    May God pardon you.
May it not be an academic exercise as usual.
May you find Christ, and make him your personal saviour.
May you repent of your past sins.
May you start leading a Christian life and not a life of bitterness.
May your Armageddon motto be forgotten about
    GOD LOVES YOU

  12. The Lord’s Prayer…”Forgive my trespasses as you forgive those who trespass against me” …

HH has not asked for forgiveness! No matter what he thinks he is not perfect in this matter!

HH is part and parcel of his recent incarceration and he should humble himself and admit it as such!

  13. Of course it was expected for him to preach forgiveness. Did you honestly expect him to say “when I come into power I will sort out those who wrongly incarcerated us?”

  14. HH is a great man; If Lungu had not stolen HH’s victory, Zambia would have been hundred miles ahead in terms of development by now; nice to see young bishop Chihana and others

  15. God is God, do not use his name in vain, you politicians. Today you are praying tomorrow, you plan evil, violence and hatred. Then you are surprised why things go against you. Be true to God, that’s all, if you want true blessings.

  16. HH should now declare and publicly recognise President Lungu and people will believe him. I still doubt this man because this time he can say that he has forgiven all people who were involved in his arrest, but deep down his heart he is looking for opportunity to misbehave again. With me I cannot oppose the stance government took to arrest Hakainde and his team for the behavior that they exhibited. I wish it was Kaunda time so that some of them would have been history!!!Being in opposition does not mean breaking the law or doing things contrary to the laws of the land. Good lesson from incarceration.

  17. Leadership comes from God. Only God knows why he is not allowing him lead Zambia. If he wanted no one could have stopped it.
They tried to stop Lungu, but God saw him through.

    • @John,
Very dumb comment. So, according to you Hitler in Nazi Germany came from God? Voster the Boer in apartheid South Africa came from God? Idi Amin in Uganda came from God?

  18. With or without HH Zambia will continue to prosper why does he always think that without him getting elected to plot one Zambia will remain in shambles? Our able Leader is egocentric that is the only problem he has, imagine his party has never gone for a convention ever since he too reign from the late Mazoka (MHSRIEP).
It is such Leaders who cling to power once put in office and remove the two Presidential tenure from the constitution just to satisfy themselves.
He shouldn’t be using the house of God for lies when we all saw what happened when he and his supporters blocked the Presidential motorcade. God’s house should not be taken for granted we even read in the Bible when the son of God was angry against those who were selling their merchandise in the house of God. He wept and…

    • What about lungu and his thugs threatening extreme violence on anyone who wants to challenge lungu, as they did to kambwili ??

  19. It is the international community and the need for an IMF bailout that put pressure on the few sensible people in PF to allow this thanks giving and the UPND renewal exercise to take place…….BBC , Aljazerra and others media had started painting lungu as a dictator…..

To date we have sent more than 3000 targeted petitions using spam software….then for the recent courtcase we must have invited all international media to peak their interest in matters bordering on dictatorship….

The response we recived was unbelievable.
    Already we are seeing results…

To everyone who wants a free a fair Zambia We thank you,
    May God bless Zambia.

    • Thanks and appreciation must also begiven to to the unsung heroes of the media campain, you know your selfs, some of you are very well known, some of you not, you are all true sons of the soil. Thank you on behalf of Zambia.

Without your efforts Zambia would be facing darker days.

IT must be stressed that there was no fabrications in all the campaigns we took part in, all incidences are verfiable so no one can accuse us of being unpatriotic.

    • Agony is to burn your own home thinking the insurance will pay you only to discover you never even insured it and starts living in the dilapidated house.

Your warped thinking of scanderlising zambia to the outside world will remain like that for hundreds of years when pf will be no more and that is the battle you will start fighting to correct. How are you going to justify it when 90% of your cabinet will be from either pf or mmd. Your are just creating a monister which you’ll fail erase. The release of hh had nothing to do with imf. If it had like you claim tell us when imf will release funds to Zambia.

    • Hh oval head

Can you tell us something, how is sending out petitions on lungus undemocratic crackdowns on the opposition scandalising zambia ??

Am I missing something ? Because no lies are in those petitions, all incidences are verifiable…….so what is scandalous about informing the wider world about those incidences ???

    • Hh oval head

On another point, you have mistaken me for a UPND cadre…that I am not….i am only intrested in a free and fair democratic Zambia where one can be assured that in elections that are free of thuggery and violence Zambians will freely chose their preferred candidate……also leadership is supposed to take the moral high ground and lead by example…..who ever becomes President and exhibits the same thuggery, corruption, violence and moral bankruptcy as lungu and PF can be assured that there will always be people like myself opposing them.

  20. BUT HAVE YOU APPOLOGISED ABOUT WHAT YOU DID IN MONGU?
WAS IT CHRISTIAN TO DO THAT?
EVEN IN THE LORDS PRAYER , YOU FIRST ASK FOR FORGIVENESS FOR YOUR OWN WRONGS, THATS WHEN YOU START THINKING OF FORGIVING OTHERS WHOM YOU THINK HAVE WRONGED YOU.
IT SAYS: “FORGIVE US OUR TRESPASSES , EVEN AS WE FORGIVE THOSE WHO TRESPASS AGAINST US” (Matth 6:12)

    • Hh was going applogise for the motocade incident before he was brutally arrested and jailed…..will lungu appologise for trying to frame HH with fake treason charges ??

    • Hankupu

Thank you for the compliment, but I am an easterner and we are all Zambian only intrested in a free and fair democratic Zambia.

    • @Haspaka Hadonkey: So you agree with me that all upnd supporters are expected to be tonga, right??…kwekwekwekwe…that is the reality on the ground, dude. Our Senior Accountant, who is Nsenga, put up a challenge to us and his friends and colleagues: SHOW ME A TONGA WHO IS PF AND I WILL JOIN UPND TODAY; That challenge has stood for 5 years and still counting….

    • Zambian citizen

Why should Tonga support pf if they don’t like their policies ?? No one should be forced to support any party they don’t believe in….maybe Tongas are less duped by the useless PF slogans than most.

    • I doubt it my friend. Even my latest business partner is 100% bemba and a upnd fanatic; I have a lot of friends who are not from Southern who are upnd. I am yet to come across a tonga who is PF, never!!! It’s all to do with tribe, my friend.

    • @Zambian Citizen
“I am yet to come across a tonga who is PF, never!!! ” You made it sound as if there was no Tonga in PF at all.
And when confronted with facts, you change your statement.
This says a lot about you.

  21. HH says he forgives those who encaserated him; that might almost sound good.

Instead of doing introspection he is busy finding faults in others and pronouncing ‘forginess’.

    • He goes in church and says ‘Lord me am Holy, I am not like those others who offended me; I hereby forgive them all’, instead of looking at his own stand with God and asking for forgiveness.

How can you dishonour and disrespect government and say you are a righteous person who needs no forgiveness, but that others who are sinners need your forgiveness?

Yes, when you forgive others then you also will be forgiven – but you must confess your sins too, not concealing them.

    • Advice@25 you are absolutely correct.HH should have at least admitted that it was wrong(or should have apologized for) what his cadres did to the Presidential motorcade in Mongu. Then his stance on forgiveness could have been accepted

  22. i am very sure HH shall rule this nation day one, am so very sure. if yu are not freinds with him better be, or else. this is my conviction and i believe its Gods doing

  23. Chiwamila mbuzi kuluma galu. Some people complained that how can we have pastors/Christians for Lungu. Now we essentially have them for HH, including those from denominations who have completely nothing to do with the Sunday worshippers. Missing in the equation are the chiefs who declared that they will not hold their “non-political traditional ceremonies” because one politician was in custody.

    • @My dear Lucy, I am just ok. The problem I am seeing is that Politics have infiltrated institution which we are supposed to run to for guidance and protection. Tell me, since when did we see this level of participation in active politics by our traditional leaders and the church? Everyone appears to be charged up politically. Can’t you see the intra and inter political differences among and between the Catholics, Pentecostal, evangelicals and now SDAs. Tell me one thing which at any point brought the SDAs, Catholics and Pentecostals to congregate and hold prayers together at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross.

  24. #Amani Hahoro Peace come back to earth this is Zambia not Rwanda what the heck are you talking, who wants to know about Kagame go and toot your horn in Kigali my friend.

  25. He should also have apologised to President Lungu and the people of Zambia for putting the life of the president in danger; the fact that he has not been convicted doesn’t mean he is innocent. Many people watched that video world over and it wasn’t a joke. Anyway bygones are bygones, let us all forget about the past and forge ahead for a better and prosperous Zambia for all. One Zambia one nation. God bless Zambia!

    • Kanganja is the one who put Lungu ‘s life in danger for clearing Lungu’s motorcade in a space of time. This is the reason the DPP saw that the case was not going anywhere because it was a planned move by PF.

  26. Thank God because HH is heading in right direction. However, when he talks about forgiveness, he shouldn’t just forgive others but he should also ask others to forgive him for acts of arson, blocking the presidential motorcade and the Namwala atrocities committed by UPND cadres.

  27. Thank God because HH is now heading in right direction and for this reason he is likely to gain confidence of Zambians and might even win an election. However, when HH talks about forgiving those who arrested him, he should also prove that he is fair, just and objective by asking Zambians to forgive him for the acts of arson and Namwala atrocities committed by his followers not to ignore the blocking of the presidential motorcade. I hope that HH realizes that people haven’t forgotten so soon. Even Chishimba Kambwili hasn’t forgotten.

  28. Bishop Chihana, just the name of the so called bishop tells it all…….tribal Don-keys in a tribal prayer meeting for their tribal small god.

  29. Adventist church elder, have you forsaken your church just because politics ?Shame. Many are called but few are chosen.Next you will go back to freemason cult

  30. If Zambia is truly a “Christian nation” while we are talking about forgiveness, I would urge the former president of Zambia, Mr Kenneth Kaunda to ask for forgiveness for the pain he caused to the people of Zambia during his dictatorial rule. Some people lost their loved ones and are living without fathers because of His insecurities. Mr Kaunda before you face your maker, you better tell the world of all the evils you did to the people of Zambia and say sorry and ask for forgiveness. God bless you and God bless the republic of Zambia

  31. Ask him may be he is now born again, prison has always helped people to be saved .
Zambia is a Christian nation this guy who used to refuse prayer now hands on his head with prayer

  32. It is gratifying to learn that HH is slowly coming to terms with the fact that ECL is a head of state. If he was a physicist he would understand that for every action/force there is an equal and opposite force. HH is already in overdrive election campaign for 2021 otherwise his “forgiveness” message is spoiled by adding “brutal arrest and incarceration”. HH should be the first to know that the little sanity we have in our great nation is that the criminals are not treated with kids’ gloves. HH should thank his Excellency Edgar Chagwa Lungu for agreeing to release his (HH) potential killer. If ECL did not consent to have HH released, HH would still be counting the ceiling nails at Mukobeko maximum prison. We need a strong and rational opposition leader to take our great nation to the next…

  33. But remember the Magistrate’s caution ,” You can be rearrested on the same case” knowing your arrogance based on your Veep’s Intercity-type of politics,,,,,uzangena anso !

  34. No man knows what God has in store for him in future all this talk about 2021 is a non starter, we should learn to live for the day and leave everything in the hands of the most High for the days to come. Who knows if those people vying for 2021 will still be alive then?
Only the Almighty knows what the future holds for each and everyone of us, imagine how many people we have lost on the roads who after calling there relatives that they are about to reach their destination only to be bundled in the mortuary or hospital beds hours later. Even these people who are busy talking about 2021 that they will take over are just building castles in the air. One bird in a hand is worth milllions than two birds in the air. ECL has the mantle now and his leadership is worth talking about. Those…

  35. HH is a hero wether you like it or not. It is the reason why the international community came through to expose those who were torturing an innocent man. He is a big man so stop ignoring that fact. It is the reason why pipo can’t stop talking about him.

  36. What he did not do was to put himself in the other’s shoes. We ought to know that nothing happens for no reason at all. The actions which lead to the consequences were well calculated otherwise he would have INSTRUCTED his team to pull to the side and let the other pass. Never the less its now water under the bridge as pronounced by the man in question.

  37. “Tell me the truth. When you were leaving prison after twenty-seven years and walking down that road to freedom, didn’t you hate them all over again?” And he said, “Absolutely I did, because they’d imprisoned me for so long. I was abused. I didn’t get to see my children grow up. I lost my marriage and the best years of my life. I was angry. And I was afraid, because I had not been free in so long. But as I got closer to the car that would take me away, I realized that when I went through that gate, if I still hated them, they would still have me. I wanted to be free. And so I let it go.

  38. @ 1.9 Wantanshi,

Where is my own thinking and reasoning if I will come out and claim that my bad actions were as a result of the ‘cruel dictator’s ideas.

  39. If I slept in the same room with HH I would always sleep with one eye open. I don’t trust him at all. Edgar must be careful especially at the Traditional ceremonies that will be held in a certain province.

  40. Damn we are so divided. Smh

If anyone doubts that we are divided just take a quick look at the chats above.

This is why our Nation is a well known beggar nation with low productivity.

Country men and women sorry to say but our intellectual caliber and state of unity is quite low at this stage.

  41. I salute, H.H for his stance to forgive those that wronged him. I find it strange to some people who are suggesting that He blocked the presidential motor cade which is to me sounds childish because there were over sixty motor vehicles on that road that day. So! Why concentrate on the vehicle which is on the middle where H.H was leaving other drivers? Please, it’s nice to forgive though others find it very difficult to forgive because they are are not Christians. It will be foolish to suggest that H.H should apologize to the people of zambia because he did not commit any offence to warrant arrest no wonder even the those that arrested him know it DEEP down their hearts. That H.H
