Four former first ladies on Saturday participated in a fashion show to raise funds for distribution of free sanitary pads to rural and vulnerable school girls.

The show held at the Taj Pamodzi Hotel featured Mrs. Vera Tembo Chiluba, Dr. Maureen Mwanawasa, Mrs. Thandiwe Banda and Dr. Christine Kaseba in an unprecedented demonstration of support to the event organized by Smart Brands Limited.

The outfits for the First Ladies were designed and made by fashion designer Chisoma Lombe.

The four former First Ladies were modelling for a project initiated by Chembe Member of Parliament Sebastian Kopulande to raise funds for distribution of free sanitary pads to rural and vulnerable school girls.

Mr Kopulande said the event was a follow up to the plea he made in his maiden speech to Parliament on 1st November 2016 to assist in the distribution of free sanitary pads.

Freedom Fighters Mama Chibesa Kankasa and Mrs. Christine Mulundika, Copper Rose, a specialized NGO in Menstrual health also attended the event as well as Ms. Mwenya Mapoma from the Graça Machel Trust attended the event along with a number of corporate sponsors.

Mr Kopulande thanked all the former First Ladies for their support in this effort saying it was humbling to see the enthusiasm with which they came to help build mother Zambia by doing something to allow that poor girl child in the rural and other deprived areas get an education, the very first step in empowering the women.

“To you First Ladies, I cannot find enough words to thank you but only to pray that the Almighty God continues maintaining in each one of you the spirit of service that you demonstrated while you worked with your dear husbands in the Office of President of our country. You have inspired me greatly in the cause of girl child education and I will continue this advocacy as I serve as Member of Parliament for Chembe,” Mr Kopulande said.

He added, “You further inspired many young women who were present at the event and you will indeed inspire those who will just hear about the event. You inspired all those who invested their time in organizing the fashion show and all those that contributed to the success of the event.”

    • What a forward-thinking MP, Sebastian Kopulande is! This is really impressive! And Chisoma Lombe is simply world class. To the former first ladies, I can’t thank you enough for raising the profile of such an event. That is how it should be.

    • Quiet frankly I’m not envious.

I have a PhD, an MSc, MBA, Bsc, MA,Bsc FCCA and CIMA

What you will never hear me or see me do is show off or claim I’m the messiah and rum my achievements under your throat.
I stay humble and stay out of the limelight as it’s the right thing to do.
Why should I be jealous ?

      Thanks

    • Mushota, it doesn’t matter how much or how many majors, it’s the quality and utilization that really matters. For me baby girl Mushota, all I’ve is just two associates and a couple certification which I accomplished on an accelerated scale. But my performance and the MONEY I make is way too much to believe for humans like you. I can even make more money but like to sleep in my special bed and drive my 7s to and from work. So, stop online schooling of Zedians online everyday.

    • @Nostradamus
Wow! Muka Yama there, by the way when is the house warming party??,, am waiting for an invitation from you to the new house,,, has Johnathan fulfilled his promise and given the house??

    • Sebastian Kopulande has a Masters degree for Oxford, he is a PF MP, why is he not in Cabinet. Answer is simple. Lungu prefers thugs like Lusambo, Kampyongo, Kapata and Kampamba

    • When they were First Ladies they couldn’t help girls with sanitary towels, they were busy shopping for themselves. How exactly will they help now? Very delusional people Zambians.

    • Mushota all those fake claimed qualifications have not helped you much hey, you don’t know the difference between “rum” and “ram”. Ati “rum my achievements under your throat” Is Nick a pirate? Since pirates like drinking rum. SMH

    • wow. making sanitary pads a big issue as though women just started having their menses this year. Africans have been on this planet for close to a million years. you mean to tell me this is when they are realizing ati they need these pads. they will get there with the pads when they do. dont make it seem as if it is priority number one.this is is why i say you are miseducated, ati masters at oxford kanshi it is a masters in being brain washed.See every drug dealer knows that to make money, you give the first doses or heroin, cocaine for free.just enough to make the person become dependent or addicted to them then you start charging them for every dose cause you know they will always come back.same here, make our people dependent on these pads for free then make them pay after they lose their…

    • …..old ways of taking care of the menses.no choice but to go back and pay whatever for more.Nothing is for free bantu bandi.this is a capitalist mans game. And with our so called educated people from oxford,we always fall into the trap. What he and these Drs kaseba etc should have done is ask or remember what they used back in the day.did they use a special tree, leaf or plant.research that plant and then engage the lawmaker to talk to the commerce, finance ministries to see how they can find some research locally to make an enhanced version of the”traditional pad”.Look for sponsors from thieves like Kaizer or the president himself to start a small industry to mass produce, instead of just buying range rovers and building houses.this will create jobs and more importantly make a…

    • …..local and natural pad that we know for sure will not have side effects because it is designed by us for us. this is what educated people do. they always think in terms of self first and not from an outsiders perspective.

    • There are actually people who find something wrong who wrong with this gesture by FORMER FIRST LAD
DIES of Zambia? Wow, sometimes you feel Zambians have too much time to lazy around and complain about nearly everything!

@Zagaze, old methods of women, especially younger women, does jive with modern day busy life style. If I tenner correctly, not even too long ago, when a girl is on her monthly period, they had to be kept home until their period is over. Now, how do you think that affected their education and career prospects?

This is marvelous help on the part of former first laddies!!

    • yamba why do you think that when we talk of african innovation, we mean living 3 millions years behind. do you honestly believe that africans potential stopped to develope the moment white people marched in the hinterlands? i did highlight that we go and look at what we did before and improve on it. in short, i asked that we make the idea of menses sanitation our very own. Education requires that you customize the acquired knowledge to best suit your environmental capabilities and perfect harmony with it. but buying pad from europe will only mean we will become addicted to them such that when we cant afford to buy them, we will be back to square one where we make the girls stay at home during their cycle. so what we thought then was progress will turn out to be an illusion of progress

    • @Zahara, brother when you talk about leaves and plants women used in the past, are you not talking about going back a million years? Those plants and leaves you are talking about have already been researched. The plant is called COTTON PLANT and the product is known as COTTON. So why do want people to waste resources and energy to REINVENT THE WHEEL? If you said Zambian should strive to own Companies to manufacture such products (pads, etc), then that’s a different discussion (a business one) and I would agree with you!!

  1. I always what young girls in the rural areas use…
Hope pads you will be given them will have no carcinogenic properties.. They should be properly screened, we don’t want ama cancers in the near future…

And Mr Kopulande championing women health issues…

    • Why isnt Kopulande one of the Minister in the PF Government I wonder. World class economist with vast Government experience; and he is also a PF MP. Him and Dr Malama (former police IG), I wonder how come they didnt make the cut for this cabinet. Meantime well done Mr Kopulande and our mothers the forner first ladies. Those pads make a difference between a girl going to school and missed a whole week of school every month.

    • iwe naiwe ulisaka sana ayi you have heard ati former first ladies but you are asking about madam lungu is she former?

    • Though it was for former ladies event as the incubate first ladies she was suppose to there to give solidarity. She was not there because she knows that she is most dirtiest first lady which Zambia has ever had; even worse than late Bet Kaunda. She did not want to imbalance here open nose (Chilimapemo or Vipuno vo vulika) that is why she was not present at the event.

  2. THESE ARE THE TYPE OF MPs WE NEED IN ZAMBIA, WORKING FOR PEOPLE. NOT FIGHTING AT PARLIAMENT BUILDING,BOWMAN LUSAMBO,CHISHIMBA KAMBWILI AND JEAN KAPATA(WEMWANAKASHI SURE) I WANDER IF YOU ARE MARRIED. YOU ARE A DISGRACE TO WOMANWOOD. YOU BROUGHT SHAME TO YOUR HUSBAND IF INDEED YOU ARE MARRIED. ATI JEAN THE BAPTIST, SHAME ON YOU AND NO ONE CAN LOOK UP TO YOU FOR INSPIRATION. YOU CALL YOURSELVES HONOURABLE YET YOU BEHAVE LIKE THUGS. BUT I WAS NOT SUPRISED BECAUSE BOWMAN LUSAMBO USED TO BEAT PEOPLE WHEN HE WAS IN MMD AS DIE HARD YOUTH WING LEADER.

  3. This is a commendable initiative and hope that the sanitary pads will not only be dished out to the girls in Chembe constituency but randomly around the country. Have you heard of a place called Kakoma which hosts Kambimba Border Post in Mwinilunga. The area is remote and girls in that part of the country need sanitary pads as well. Well done former first ladies and Hon. S. Kopulande for the initiative. It has come at the right time. God Bless you ALL.

  4. Meanwhile Chawama Old Hen is recieving cheques for just being married to Lazy Lungu …all these contractors giving in return for something!!

  5. Current 1st lady Esther Lungu was on the Copperbelt where she graced the Inter Company Relay organised by ZAAA, an equally important event. Kopulande has always been a pacesetter, undeterred by the devastating accident he suffered that left him with one arm. We are yet to see more from him. The former first ladies look gorgeous! Beware of the losing Tonga Bull, I here he’s good at enticing widowed eminent ladies. He can strike!

  6. I thank you “former” first ladies. To me you shall for ever be first ladies. Indeed your coming together for a common cause just shows how united we can be when called to do just ventures. Mind not the young bloggers who have no regard for age difference and status. They always find assembly of words to demean others even when not necessary.

  7. SEX EDUCATION I SCHOOLS IS ULTIMATELY THE ANSWER. DONT BEAT ABOUT THE BUSH, BEAT THE DRUM . Thank you First Ladies nonetheless for stepping forward

  8. Wooow well done ba First ladies mwe!!! mwaliwama bonse nimwe bana No. 1. Jealous down
All of you came out No. 1. Lets have a round of applause pwapwapwapwapwpwapwawapwaaaaaaaaaa
