Roan Member of Parliament Chishimba Kambwili has labelled Grandview International, the firm at the centre of the controversial procurement of fire tenders as the Guptas of Zambia.
The comparison between Grandview International and the powerful Gupta family of South Africa could be due to the allegations of corruption that officials at Grandview are facing.
Bokani Soko, one of the Directors at Grandview International is believed to be a close business associate of President Edgar Lungu just as the Guptas are seen to be close to President Jacob Zuma and some of his cabinet ministers.
In an interview, Mr Kambwili said what is happening in Zambia today is a pure act of state capture where a few business persons are looting state resources using State House.
He said Mr Soko has easy access to State House and uses it to facilitate business deals.
“These are the Guptas of Zambia. Bokani enters State House like he is entering the extension of his bedroom and now he is into everything now from fire tenders, roads to fertiliser supply,” Mr Kambwili said.
He added, “Zambians have to wake up now. This state capture means that if one is not in good books with Bokani, then you can’t do business with the government. This is grand corruption and the evidence is there.”
Mr Kambwili alleged that Bokani Soko through Neria Investments is also supplying oil to Zambia at an inflated cost.
“For every litre of fuel sold, he pockets 1 dollar. This is why our fuel is the most expensive in the region,” he said.
