Katete village ‘bankers’ want loan ceiling increased from K 2 000 to K 5 000

Women under the village banking women empowerment programme in Katete district have appealed to government to increase the loan ceiling threshold from its current K 2, 000 to K 5,000.

Hildah Phiri, a beneficiary, said increasing the ceiling would enable most women to complete their projects in time.

Ms. Phiri, who is currently building a five roomed house using the empowerment loan scheme, said she would complete her house in time once the ceiling is increased.

“I have spent so far K 5, 000 on my house but once government hears our plea of increasing the ceiling, it would help me put the floor and connect it to the power lines,” she said.

Meanwhile, Katete District Community Development Officer Sarah Banda said currently, the programme has about 96 beneficiaries in the district.

Ms. Banda said most of the 96 beneficiaries have become financially sound and were able to take up building projects and venture into businesses.

She said the programme was being implemented in three areas of the district namely Katete central, Mbang’ombe and Kagoro.

She said the programme was a revolving fund which has currently garnered about K200, 000 from its initial funding of K 45, 000.

Ms. Banda however said the programme was facing some operational challenges which have hampered its service delivery.

“The challenges we are facing are mainly transport, funding and operational funds to run the project because it is a revolving fund so each time we make an interest, we get to use from the same interest for operations, so the growth rate is not that much big,” she said.
