Government bans pig movement and all pork products in Muchinga province

THE Department of Veterinary services in Muchinga Province says it has with immediate effect banned pig movements from the province. The department has also banned selling of all pork products in and outside the province.

This is in the wake of an outbreak of African swine fever affecting 5 Districts of Muchinga province which include Chinsali, Isoka, Chama, Shiwang’andu and Mpika Districts, respectively.

The highly contagious viral disease has so far claimed 10,600 pigs in the five districts of Muchinga Province adding that the disease has affected 2,700 households.

ZANIS reports that Provincial Veterinary Officer Dr. Wilson Katumbi said in an interview, today , everyone in the province is expected to comply with the ban or risk being prosecuted, accordingly.

Dr. Katumbi said dealers in pork products will not be allowed to sale pork products during the period of the ban.

Yesterday the department of Veterinary services called for an urgent stakeholders meeting to discuss the outbreak of the African swine fever.

The stakeholders’ meeting that was attended by ward councilors, heads of government departments, butchery owners, senior chief Nkula, among others, also resolved to intensify the sensitization campaign on the disease outbreak in order to contain it.

African swine fever is a viral disease with no vaccine or treatment and it is highly contagious with 100 percent death rate.

African swine fever was first reported in some parts of Chinsali in 2010.
