Siavonga district in Southern Province has recorded one case of cholera.

Siavonga District Commissioner (DC) Lovemore Kanyama confirmed the development to ZANIS saying the affected person is a Siavonga council employee aged 28.

Mr. Kanyama said the patient is currently being observed at Siavonga district hospital and would be referred to a cholera centre which the Siavonga council and the hospital staff are preparing in Kabila area.

He has since reiterated that all public gatherings in the district, which include church activities, the Monday market at the harbour and bars, will remain suspended until the situation is contained.

He has also urged the residents of Siavonga to wash their hands with soap after using the toilet, avoid eating already prepared food in the markets and buying fruits from the streets.

Mr. Kanyama said government was working hard to put up measures aimed at stopping the spread of the cholera epidemic.

Siavonga district last recorded a cholera case eight years ago.

And briefing the media in Lusaka yesterday morning, Minister of Health Chitalu Chilufya revealed that cholera cases have increased from 2,426 reported yesterday to 2,451 yesterday and 58 people have died since October last year when the disease broke out in Lusaka.

  1. You see now cholera is spreading further yet some misguided folks wanna tell us more movement and risky public gathering is okay?

  2. Don’t worry, our well able, hard working PF government will deal with this Cholera pandemic without ant hitches and expeditiously. Zambia is blessed to have ECL at the helm. Other countries throughout Africa envy us. Let all Patriotic Zambians support government plans, pursuits and purposes.

    • “able, hard working PF government” MY FOOT! It is because we have a corrupt and incompetent government, headed by the chief thief Lungu, that we have a cholera epidemic in the first place.

Lungu and his PF thieves are so busy stealing Zambians money, and borrowing to steal even more, they have had no time to do the jobs they are actually drawing salaries to do.

THEY HAVE CAUSED THIS DISASTER THROUGH THEIR IGNORANCE, INCOMPETENCE AND NEGLECT!

  3. The DC looks like a cholera patient too. Its better to close the pontoon in SIAVONGA no tourists from accross to avoid contamination. UPND in SIAVONGA NEEDS TO FIGHT THE DISEASE ALONE

  4. #1.0 Zambians are complicated. ..they corrupt the policeman and turn around that the police are corrupt. At this time everyone must cooperate with everyone if we’re to contain the scourge. It’s gonna be tough especially when those who live off the tithe are busy convincing people that the church is protected from cholera.
