MTN Zambia has donated bins vests and other materials to the Zambian government in the fight against Cholera

MTN Zambia has donated 300 bins, 60 vests and K100, 000 worth of assistance that will cover items such as hand sanitizer, towels and soap to the Ministry of Health (MoH) and Lusaka City Council (LCC) to help curb the Cholera outbreak in the capital city.

MTN Zambia has made the donation, worth over half a million Kwacha to supplement Government efforts in the fight against the outbreak that has exceeded over 2, 600 cases since December 2017.

MTN Chief Executive Officer Charles Molapisi said the contribution was in line with the company’s long-term responsibility to communities where MTN operates, through its corporate social responsibility program.

“The decision to support the Zambian government and local authority is in line with MTN’s commitment to look beyond its main operations by reaching out to the communities through its corporate social responsibility. Curbing the spread of Cholera is not the sole responsibility of the government and this is why we are making this donation to help citizens and local authorities mitigate the spread of the disease,” said Molapisi.

Molapisi further added that MTN Zambia believed the community needed support in ensuring sanitation measures that protect wellness and good health through a clean environment that stops the spread of the disease.

“We believe that even after the country manages the outbreak, health and sanitation must remain a priority and this is why we are thinking long term. There is need to ensure that residents have enough bins and awareness regarding waste disposal.”

MTN Zambia’s corporate social responsibility programme includes the 21 Days of Y’ello Care, an initiative that began over ten years ago as a way of MTN Group responding to social needs in the communities in which the company operates.

Under the programme, MTN staff participates in bettering the communities where they are present through a number of activities that include clean ups and waste disposal. Molapisi urged the community to continue applying good hygiene practices as a key preventative measure in the fight against the disease.

    • So!! What does Mumbi “No tissue mu chimbusu” Phiri has to say on this move? Everyone sees opportunity here, its not just UNDP. MTN has really hit Mumbi Phiri in her face….boom!!

    • Mumbi Phiri said cholera shouldn’t be commercialized. MTN should have sympathy on the victims.

      But ba PF fipuba.

  1. So!! What does Mumbi “No tissue mu chimbusu” Phiri has to say on this move? Everyone sees opportunity here, its not just UNDP. MTN has really hit Mumbi Phiri in her face….boom!!

  2. And the whole country goes yellow! they are simply advertising.
Cholera is now free space for adverts!

  3. Well done MTN corporate social responsibility demands plouging back part of profit into the community.
Branding them in corporate colours is ok, MTN runs on commercial basis with motive of making profit, and this is part of marketing communication.

  4. Thank you MTN for donating the materials which am sure shall be put to good use. Thank you to all concerned citizens.

  5. It will just be dirty all over! Yellow, Red, Green, hh cosmo, Chipimo everyone all over the streets of Lusaka! atase set some standards imwe! if it bins, lets same colour everywhere! Iwe sleeping kalumba efinshi ifi?

  6. The bins will be quickly stolen because they are too attractive-poor strategy ba MTN. However, those of us who grew up under the investor called ZCCM know that this 2nd Republic company never donated bins but had an obligation to look after its employees by providing bins, garbage collection services, sanitation services, water and sewerage services etc. We never heard of cholera in Mufulira, Chingola, Kitwe Luanshya. Only in Lusaka

  7. Thanks MTN Zambia for the donation. Congratulations for the effort made in an attempt to combating cholera in Zambia. This is a very wonderful gesture which deserves an applause. Commitment to a solution to a problem is far better than arm chair critics who are just bent to fault finding.Thank you a million times MTN. Please keep up with good work.
