President Edgar Lungu is welcomed by Minister of Labour ,Joyce Nonde Simukoko during labour day celebrations

The Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has called for an immediate end to the debate on the nationality of President Edgar Lungu charging that the debate is unproductive.

Speaking during the Labour Day Celebrations in Chinsali District yesterday, held at the presidents’ park, ZCTU Secretary General Cosmas Mukuka said the debate on the nationality of President Lungu should come to an end because it is unproductive and a waste of time and resources.

Mr Mukuka wondered why the issue of President Lungu nationality should become a matter of concern to the opposition political parties now when President Lungu has been in Government for a long time.

The ZCTU official said the debate is now becoming a source of income for some people at the expense of development.

He charged that the opposition risks becoming irrelevant to the Zambian people if it engages in petty and unproductive issues such as the current one on the nationality of President Lungu.

Mr Mukuka said the opposition is there to provide checks and balances on issues affecting the citizens and not on issues such as the nationality of a sitting President.

He has also advised Government to stop commenting on the issue of President Lungu nationality saying workers and Zambians in general have serious issues that need to be addressed adding that energies and resources being channelled towards the debate on President Lungu’s nationality should be directed to other productive matters that will contribute to the development of the country.

Mr Mukuka said politics of hate and selfishness will not take the country anywhere saying the opposition and the ruling party should also promote the spirit of dialogue.

He said dialogue and mutual understanding should be promoted among stakeholders of common interest for the betterment of society.

And Mr Mukuka has expressed great concern over the ever increasing bill for civil servants in Muchinga Province in terms of unpaid settling in allowances, Loading and offloading, subsistence allowances many others.

Mr Mukuka said Government should quickly pay the officers who have not been paid their settling in allowances.

This year’s Labour Day celebrations were held under the theme ‘’Building Partnerships for Sustainable National Development through Decent Job Creation and Social Justice.’’

Workers from several departments from both the Government and the private sector received awards in various categories with Tanzania Zambia Mafuta (TAZAMA) giving one of its employees K21,000 cash for hardworking, the highest amount of cash ever given during the Labour Day celebrations since the creation of Muchinga Province 7 years ago.

  1. Wrong approach.

President should address it or the office of the President should sue the people who are accusing him.

    Not the Police NOT ZCTU

    Thanks

    • Its a constitutional matter which needs to be settled in court…we are tired of these ba mwisa either Zambians are too kind or to DULL. I tend to think to DULL.

Zambians tend to take things on a very light note … this is a serious matter. Anywhere in the world the speaker of parliament would have been petitioned to immediately investigate this matter. This is national security at stake. All indication so far is that thei Malawian can not explain is being a Zambian

    • Mushota, they are not asking about the physical address but that opposition parties stop discussing (addressing) the issue of ECL being Non-Zambian or the the Government’s take that ECL is a Zambia! However, I would have thought this is the best time for Mushota to give us empirical evidence on the merits for or not discussing this! For a PhD associate, you don’t bring out any valid reasoning to your arguments except insisting you are a BB for a year in the past!

    • There are too many monkeys sharing the bread basket.

      ZCTU leadership is among them.

You can not stop people debating any subject. Why is “Lungu” so uncomfortable with this debate?

2021 is coming. The wicked and corrupt should get jailed when new leadership is ushered in!!

    • WHILE
“……… the debate is now becoming a source of income for some people at the expense of development.”

      It is also
becoming a source of some people to make themselves visible.

WRONG PERSON, and WRONG ORGANIZATION to issue such a statement. We are waiting for AMOS !!

  2. Instead of fighting for workers rights, you are fighting for the presidents rights. You travel all the way to Muchinga to make such an appeal.

  3. 4. It’s Edgar Changwa Lungu himself, and his sister, who have brought this debate to the fore. The matter deserves to be exhausted conclusively. There is too much trash already under the carpet.

  5. Why those contradictions from the purported sister or rather twin sister with 9 months apart after their birth and in different places.

  6. ZCTU completely lost as usual. This is not a trade union issue. What is difficult to comprehend kanshi. Wrong approach as well, workers rights first. And in any case, there is no offence to querry the origins of the President. What is difficult apa pene, is it school?

  7. All those challenging the nationality of Edgar Lungu are very dull. Where have they been all along? Are they so hopeless that they can’t beat him through a ballot? Focus your energies on real issues affecting Zambians by providing alternative solution.

  8. The reason Guy Scott, did not qualified to be President, because both of his parents Where not born in Zambia.

    Chiwamina Galu Kuluma mbuzi

  9. If your ZCTU is not intrested in discussion of your pay master’s Nationality, its you to stop.
How can you think so low on such a serious constitution matter? its your ZCTU that is becoming useless to the interest of Zambian workers.
    STOP YAPPING BANE

  10. There is one party which thinks that when the cock does not crow, the sun will not rise and this is the UPND. The country is in a democracy and for that matter with uncountable number of parties and the most compared to other Countries. UPND has of late applied all sorts of gymnastics to grab leadership of the country but in vain. Now they have a person who decided to remain silent in court and expect the same to speak for the people of Chilanga when she failed to do the same in the “people vs Munkanta. Even their own are questioning the logic behind this setup. As for origins of various people, have you ever wondered why names are common in border areas and fact that some have relatives in the neighboring countries who are not Zambian?

  11. If we don’t stop this, we, the Zambian people will b taken for rid by many people. This must end and be concluded. It may look small but big, very big

  12. ZCTU can go to hell.Ending debate Now is like abandoning a football match before half time.No wonder you have failed to represent the workers because of misplaced priorities. You have been dining and wining with Lungu. It cannot be a surprise knowing how you like good food and beer and cars.

  13. Until the late 50s Nyasaland, and the two Rhodesias were one country. Zambia became a country in 1963 and on 24th October, 1964 it had its first president Kaunda. Kaundas cabinet had people in his cabinet from Zimbabwe (Milner) and from Malawi etc. Do you see why this debate Lungu is all N.O.N.S.E.N.S.E? Lungu was born in 1956 when there was no Zambia. But for him he was born on the Copperbelt in Northern Rhodesia which later became Zambia. Lungu is Zambian period. These debates are now starting in Zimbabwe where they now claim Mnangagwa is Zambian, really! Whats wrong with us africans kansi? I agree this debate needs to stop, it is very unproductive.
