Business in Kasama town yesterday came to standstill when Minister of Works and Supply Felix Mutati led a team of officers from the Control of Government Transport Unit (CGTU) and impounded over 20 vehicles.

The operation that caught most government drivers by surprise was mounted at Shoprite area after the Labour Day celebrations.

Speaking to journalists after the operation, Mr. Mutati said he was dismayed at the rampant abuse of government vehicles by some institutions.

He said during the one hour operation, the team impounded over 20 vehicles from various institutions in the province because the drivers lacked proper documentation.

The minister said in some cases the drivers had no competence whist other government vehicles were driven by unauthorized individuals.

Mr. Mutati said the situation was saddening because the government was losing a lot of money due to the widespread abuse of government transport by workers.

He added that the abuse of government vehicles across the country is worrying, saying that the level of adherence to laid down procedures and regulations among government officers is very low.

Mr. Mutati said there is need to change the mindset on the usage of government property, saying that his ministry will intensify the battle against such abuses as it was a cost on the treasury and the common tax payer.

He said the government had a lot of projects and programmes that needed to be implemented but were being delayed due to a constrained resource envelop.

Mr. Mutati further warned that his ministry will ensure strict adherence to rules and regulations, saying those found wanting will face the wrath of the law.

And some residents spoken to commended the government for the operation.

Joseph Mwenya, a Kasama resident who witnessed the operation expressed happiness at the conduct of the CGTU officers, saying it was time to curb the levels of indiscipline by public officers who are in the habit of abusing government vehicles.

  1. Lungu categorically said “uubomba mwibala aya mwibala, ….”. These workers abusing Govt property are doing so in accordance with the advice from Lungu himself.

For as long as Lungu carries on saying what he has been saying, workers will continue to do what they have been doing.

    • Hands on management by Mutati.
Mutati, Lusambo, Siliya , Vincent are working…. All are MMD.

    • Are these vehicles given to PF thugs to chase GBM and mount road blocks to prevent UPND from voting?

They are the same vehicles PF thugs used to abduct some UPND officials and poison them.

All this shows how corrupt incompetent Lungu and dog advisors are

Lungu and his cohort must go by what ever means.

  2. The curbing of civil service indiscipline regarding vehicle abuse was very strong once upon a time, specifically during UNIP era. Alas, with the advent of the democratic dispensation around 1991 government vehicles were also democratized, such that every officer had a vehicle to abuse whenever they desired. So Minister Mutati must be commended for undertaking this discipline measure.

  3. Ministries have Transport Officers. They need to be held accountable for allowing vehicle movement on unauthorised trips with uncertified drivers.

  4. As a political Engineer, Please PF Mr Felix Mutati must be fired . He is campaining, ichikupempula echikulya, FIRE HIM NOW , why u allow a potential enemy to play around ur mind and u give him an opportunity to do so through ur own Government

    • Spaka like lilo, GPS very good idea. I hope they still don’t get around it…these ‘pests’ always have a way of reaping where they have not sowed or where pesticides have been applied. Only a President with a military inclination or background can sort out the mess in our country, not these wicked civilians. Apaboomba umusoja palamoneka. Umu civilian afulukutafulukutafye. Ni cimbwi no plan whether they are educated, wealthy, or not! God bless our great Nation Zambia.

  5. Better they just reduce the number of govt vehicles in service. That way they will save millions of US dollars spent on actually buying new cars, spares, maintenance, fuel, insurance and other costs!

But well done Mutati keep it up, whether its to gain political mileage or not keep it up don’t stop.

  6. I wonder why some people are insulting The minister.whether he is doing this for personal gain or for the Nation, his stance is a very good one bcoz its too much in terms of abuse of government properties.Just continue dealing with them

  7. We need to Magufulify our nation to sort out most of the mess in our country. These civilian minds will not change anything in this country. We need a ‘mad’ President to run this country; someone who even the Chinese and Indians will think more than twice before they can bribe him. Yes, Hon. Mutati is doing what is supposed to be done but is it a genuine intention or with a hidden agenda? One thing I realize is that these politicians know what is supposed to be done but they don’t do it because they all have a small-mind mentality – get rich before term expires! Very sad!!

    • By the way, at the moment we still don’t a suitable candidate for National President. Kambwili is still immature, HH is not presidential material but a businessman who is obsessed with his questionable wealth and thinks it makes him a good candidate. I wish Brig. General Godfrey Miyanda could rule this country. But alas, he’s disappeared into oblivion. I think Hon. Given Lubinda, if he were to take over from ECL, would bring sanity in Government. Mind you, I am saying, “I think”. God bless our great Nation Zambia.
