Government says it has secured land in Choma to allow investors put up shopping malls in the provincial capital and other districts of Southern Province.

Southern Province minister Edify Hamukale said land has been found for chain store supermarkets to open up shopping malls in the province.

Addressing a press briefing at his office in Choma, Dr Hamukale explained that the districts along the line of rail such as Choma and Monze have experienced population growth which has resulted in increased economic activity.

The minister said he is saddened that most people in rural districts in the province have to travel to Livingstone, Mazabuka or Lusaka to do their shopping.

He said his office is available to provide demographic information for market surveys to all those interested in the investment opportunity.

Dr Hamukale said the population of Southern Province has swelled tremendously and that people are desperate for shopping malls.

    • Let’s give credit where it’s due..am neither PF nor UPND but this is good news for our brothers and sisters in Choma

    • We need/want FACTORIES, NOT STUPI.D MALLS.

What use is a mall when we can’t afford even a decent meal? Lusaka malls are full of broke people loitering, window-shopping & broke youngsters taking selfies. When you buy full trolleys, they scorn at you ati “fya ma orphan”.

Malls sell imported goods from RSA & China thus creating jobs for xenophobic south africans.

Most mall workers earn peanuts. Ask anyone working for shoprite.

  1. We’ve sunk this low we now consider building malls & supermarkets full of imported stuff as “attracting investors ” really?

  2. Everyone wants a shopping mall to give foreigners money and jobs in RSA….what a lazy mindset perpetuated by these utterly lazy empty tins!!!

  3. What a foolish country….when will we ever have investment of production! A mall is not real development…to sell things from South Africa, China and india…

  4. securing land is not an achievement ,how do u boast of finding land in ur own territory to give infestors? I could be news if the title read CHOMA GIVES LAND TO A ZAMBIAN INVESTOR TO MANUFACTURE FARM IMPLEMENTS

  5. If this is the shallow level if thinking amongst ministers, no wonder we have such a mediocre government.

  6. Please , when are we going to start opening factories and manufacture plants ? , shopping malls shopping malls only ??

    • You live overseas and can’t think of putting up a factory in your country. What do you do in UK. Investor doesn’t mean it has to be a foreign national nooo baba even locals can be investors all you need is NOT money but a plan. With you whenever you hear of a mall south Africa business men comes into picture. Ask yourself what you can do for zambia before you think of any foreigner.

    • Oval head you’re mistaken. I came to Zambia to set up an investment project and the hurdles they have been putting in front of me are unbelievable. The fact is Zambians roll out the red carpet for foreigners but fellow Zambians who have real interest in the country and its people they treat with a dismissive attitude. People still exhibit the colonial ‘bwana’ mentality. Until Zambians rid themselves of colonial brainwashing, the economy will continue to be in foreign hands and we’ll continue to be dirt poor.

  7. Pipo in rural areas have to go to Livingston for shopping. Anything wrong to bring those malls near their townships such as choma, monze etc?what is wrong is to import everything from SA,etc.let the local pipo supply most of goods to those chain stores to be created.

  8. Yep! Shopping malls make a lot sense. If:
    1. I were a Choma vegetable farmer a market for my produce has come closer. Large chain stores are now stocking majority Zambian farmers produce.
    2. If I were a tax paying employee in choma either in private or government, I expect banks to come closer for convenience. Banks are a major feature at all shopping malls. Thumbs up.
3.i were a doctor, nurse or teacher or indeed and any government worker deployed to go and work in Choma, life will be easier with shopping malls available in rural Zambia. I don’t have to worry about being posted outside of the big cities. Choma people will enjoy my services.

  9. Just because Lusaka is swamped with shopping malls and people hare developed a negative view of them, it is not the same in every part of Zambia. Others are hungry for just one major store. Lusaka is not Zambia. Others want to live a quality life as well. It’s not all about you all the time. Are we so narrow minded that whenever you hear the word shopping mall, all you think about are goods in shop rite and pick n pay. There are banks at shopping malls, that’s employment for our people, photo shops, pharmacies, it brings service providers like airtel, mtn and zamtel that usually have major stores at these malls closer to the people.
Rural urban drift will no longer be an issue if we make rural areas livable. Now, please allow that nurse who is bored of rural life to take her…

  10. This is useless, locals locals?? Do you see how much they do shiit whenever they are given a contract?? They take advantage and do useless stuff..kaili they are locals.. Nothing is wrong na ma investors they create job too..

  11. Fellow zambia why dont we take a leaf from the way our Tanzanians economists are doing??They have promotef local products, agricultural products, you cant find shoprite, pick n pay there, malls are ok but who is benefiting??products are 90% coming from SA.

  12. You maloza you need to work! You are expecting the government to buy food for you? You need not to be lazy that is the real heart of poor people. Country men let us remain united for the betterment of our country Zambia.

  13. Let us not give out our land to investors in the name of investment.but instead we should also have shares in the same investment. There is no way we can be leasing out our precious land to foreigners for 99 years there is no way.But then let us just provide land and leave out tittle deeds for Zambians.

  14. In one breath the govt said they were going to ban investors from owning land then the next that govt are sourcing and giving them the land. as for Zambians doing this they can, nothing stopping Zambians from getting land and building a shopping centre however they want it for near free. there are lot of investment Zambians can do, problem is lots are too lazy to do it but are fast to complaint of others.
