Minister of General Education David Mabumba says the strategic reforms being undertaken by his ministry will improve the performance of children in schools.

Mr. Mabumba said the gradual process of addressing key elements which constitute the education sector in the country will have a positive impact on learner performance.

He said this when he addressed various stakeholders during an education indaba held in Solwezi district in North-western Province.

Mr. Mabumba said as long as strategic reforms are not taken, the performance of children in schools will not improve.

He noted that the indaba is being held to reveiw the strategic operations of the ministry and will give North-western Province an opportunity to address matters affecting the education sector in the province.

Mr. Mabumba also explained that the current infrastructure in schools across the country is no longer sustainable and therefore needs urgent attention.

He said all schools should work on creating and maintaining a healthy environment for pupils in line with the keep Zambia clean, green and healthy campaign which was recently launched by President Edgar Lungu.

Meanwhile, North-western Province Minister Nathaniel Mubukwanu called on teachers to help stop exam malpractice in schools.

He further urged parents in the Province to ensure that school going children concentrate on their education in order to improve learner performance during exams.

  1. There appears to be this draconian top-down behavior in Zambia that will make even good intentions stall. I hope the Ministry is doing things from a clean slate, to take up and consider matters in a bottom-up fashion. Always time consuming I know but it is empowering in the end to get a buy in from the so-called stakeholders. I see something brewing in the sale of a school in Lusaka as a case in point. Good luck.

    • The ministry of general education must come up with a parallel promotion system like it is in developed countries. a teacher can select to be a professional teacher or be in management. a professional teacher still can have his or her salary scale upgraded as long as they meet the performance targets. we are losing too many teachers in management thus losing their experience. this has created a pyramid for promotions.

  3. Issues surrounding education system in Zambia are well-known. We need an action-oriented experienced leadership. Rural schools lack basic infrastructure – class blocks, houses and dorms + furniture. Our old missionary schools had building & carpentry facilities where basic needs were met locally. These days they want to float a tender for a Chinese to produce benches from our local trees a politician gave them to cut, export to China to make benches to sell to the Zambian ministry HQ who will in turn send them to the rural school. You’d be lucky if half a bench finally arrives at Ikeleng’i school near where the original tree came from. The whole budget exhausted and yet we can still manage another one of those several workshops to strategize!!!!. One workshop can roof a rural classroom.
