Opposition UPND Leader Hakainde Hichilema has dismissed that the UPND should have a leadership change.
Mr. Hichilema said such calls are part of the PF propaganda aimed at diverting people’s attention.
He said the calls are a scheme by the PF to further destabilize the opposition.
Mr. Hichilema has since described the calls that the UPND should undergo a leadership at all levels of the party as cheap propaganda.
Mr. Hichilema said that all UPND members are aware that the party will hold its party convention when the right time comes.
Mr. Hichilema said that the members who have been calling for a change of leadership in the UPND are been sponsored by the ruling party to stir confusion.
He said it is insincere to link the party’s recent loss in the Chilanga Parliamentary by-election to to the perceived leadership challenges facing the UPND.
But PF media director Sunday Chanda has urged Mr. Hichilema to listen to the calls from his members to hold a national convention.
He also denied claims by the UPND leader that the PF has a hand in the call from UPND members for the leaders to seek a fresh mandate from the people.
Mr. Chanda said the UPND has a constitution which demands that the party holds regular convention.
He charged that the UPND is in breach of not only the party’s but the republican constitution regarding intra party democracy.
He expressed shock that Hichilema is not moved by the call for convention to elect new leaders.
He said the silence in UPND over the people that want the convention would soon explode because not everyone one is in UPND is happy with his way of politics.
Mr. Chanda claimed that Sylvia Masebo is under attack along with Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba and Mutale Nalumango after making pronouncement of the convention.
hh will stand in 2021. That general conference will be window dressing to endorse him once more.
HH is doing himself and his party a de-service by constantly answering to calls that deals with political leadership but keeps silent on calls that really matter, such as eSwatini gate, Zesco gate, etc.
ECL is doing well by portraying himself as one who stands for development. And he is being consistent with that image and people are buying into that, therefore, whatever case that is coming up is being deflected. The trumpism kind of… While HH, has not shown any form of image building, the negative image still remains and unfortunately, he is not doing enough. I listened to the final Chilanga Meeting….which to me lacked any selling. The issue is that politics in Zambia, is based on who shouts louder by criticizing the other party, but lack on what to offer.

HH has become a liability now – change leadership starting with him leaving presidency to fresh blood with fresh ideas. He has kept the party together but has failed to deliver the presidency.
Its only wise that if he doesnt want UPND to go into oblivion he steps aside, he has stopped making sense as an opposition.

As long as HH is the leader of UPND, for some of us it is ‘cant neva’! I dont see how going to a convention would harm the party. If HH loses the leadership, then the party can regroup or if it endorses HH then atleast he can say that the party is democratic and would apply the same principles if voted into power. It seems young man HH specializes in accusing everyone else except himself for his self created misfortunes.. Politics like football the aim is to disturb the opponent so that your midfielder can pass the ball to his striker whose job is to feint the goal keeper and put the ball in the net. Expecting someone to give you free passage is a dream that will never materialize. HH either doesn’t have good midfielders or he doesn’t allow them to play freely.

Edgar is the sitting President who already has won two elections. Edgar has not been the head of PF for over a decade. HH should have stood down when he lost in 2011, his third loss. Even if he did not step down but had some conventions in the intervening period, his position would be more tenable than it is now.
@kp, there is a difference. In PF the membership is clamouring for ECL’s sole candidature in 2021. In UPND the opposite is happening. The membership wants him to step down or better still, be tested at a convention.
Being endorsed by other people is not the same as endorsing yourself.
Just as you’re avoiding the clause that allows Edgar to stand in 2021, the others will also try to stop you standing with or without good intentions.

The real problem with HH is that he always looks inwards (self centered). Everything revolves around him. May be he is right but only to the extent that his father Anderson Mazoka endorsed him as the heir to the throne of a Tonga political party. One wonders whether his advisors would have any role at all. The man is a typical pseudo dictator. This leads us to another point. Our registrar of societies should ensure that they only register parties with a clear and un ambigious democratic constitutions. The ECZ should take charge of all Elections of political parties including that of student leader representatives at institutions of higher learning in the country. This will ensure that our democracy thrives at all levels of governance.

We can’t fooled again by H.H. by blaming PF for a long outstanding issue in UPND “call for leadership change”. You can’t afford to deny people their constitution rights to decide on who leads them into 2021 general elections. H.H. blaming PF as a force behind a call for a leadership change is an open insult to the intelligence of UPND members. Does H.H. believe that there is no one in UPND capable and intelligent enough to call for leadership chance in UPND except that idea injected by PF.
The problem is lies in treating a political party as a business property when it is suppose to taken as a social club with no absolute owner. Political party is a property of all members and not one individual.

Yes it is all about hh. Even when he was at mukobeko, GBM could not act as president, the upnd leadership had to drive to kabwe everyday to get instructions from hh. The other issue of not listening to the grassroots when it comes to adoption of candidates both in the unpd and PF is not good. PF lost 11 parliamentary seats to independent candidates and upnd lost 3 seats in 2016. You should listen to the grassroots because they are the ones who vote. hh thinks when he paints Zambia black in foreign countries he will win elections back home, he forgets that it is Zambians back home who vote.
