Chikankata farmers to sell maize to private buyers

Re-bagged sacks of maize awaiting FRA officials to buy from farmers

Some farmers in Chikankata district in Southern Province have expressed dissatisfaction with the floor price of a 50 kilogramme (kg) bag of maize grain which the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) has pegged at K65.

Chikankata district Cooperative Society farmers representative Hakeete Hamalambo said farmers in the area have since resolved not to sell their grain to FRA.

Mr. Hamalambo told ZANIS in Chikankata district today that the low maize floor price was a loss to farmers.

He added that most farmers in the district will hold on to their maize and later sell it to private buyers.

In another development, Henry Lweendo, a small scale farmer of Ching’ang’auka area has appealed to government to ensure that farming inputs for the 2018/2019 farming season are delivered on time.

Mr. Lweendo said this will enable farmers prepare adequately for the next farming season and possibly realise good yields next year.

  1. Wish every farmer could follow, k65 is just to small. The show is run by lazy things what do you expect!!!!

  2. Remember the MaizeGate Scandal.
a)The will issue a ban maize exports.
b)The ministers will use money from the Lebanese and Chinese to buy off the local maize cheaply.
c)They ministers themselves will then export the maize to neighbouring countries such as DRC,Malawi,Rwanda etc.
d)They sell the maize at higher price and pocket the USD millions in profits.
Anyway ,Zambians never learn.Continue with your Dununa Reverse.

    • I doubt even FRA got any money from that $100million Kenya deal and if they did they must have misused it!!

    • You are absolutely right . Let them continue to suffer as they seem to enjoy and love dununa reverse.I guess liberalised economy (export) is only for those in power and the not the poor farmers that put in the hard work.

  3. The price set by FRA is the price it is able to pay farmers who will be wiling to sell their maize to it!Farming is business and farmers are free to sell st higher price to buyers who can buy from them!Let’s have a changed mind set.
