Police in Nchelenge district have picked a body of a woman who committed suicide by hanging herself to a tree using a wrapper locally known as chitenge.

The woman only identified as Banza and believed to be a Congolese national was found hanging from a tree on Friday, July 20, around 17:00 hours.

Luapula Province Police Commissioner Elias Chushi told ZANIS that the matter was reported to police by a village headman Chipili Chabilikila.

Mr. Chushi said the deceased alleged lived in fear of immigration officers because she had no legal documents allowing her to stay in Zambia.

He said on unknown dates and time, the deceased disappeared from home and never returned upon hearing that immigration officers were going to the village in search of prohibited immigrants.

He said the deceased’s body was later found in a decomposed state in the bush after conducting a search.

  1. This is very sad. Why couldn’t she just go back home instead of ending her life this way. Borders have played a part in this tragedy.

    • Zambian immigration should focus on the Chinese first, then the Lebanese and the Indians. The Congolese people are our brothers and sisters. It’s the artificial borders set up by colonialists that separated us. Please be easy on them. Plus Congo is very unstable right now, which means Congolese nationals qualify for asylum in Zambia. Stop persecuting our African brothers and sisters, unless they’re committing crimes.

  2. You immigration and your chief are all very corrupt. You are are targeting your fellow black brothers and sisters while being bribed to turn a blind eye to the hundreds of thousands of Indians and Chinese illigal immigrants.

    Shame on you.

    • Spaka, my village borders with DRC and we have so many of our unfortunate neighbors from across the Luapula living in our villages without harassment. The case here is very unfortunate and the first of its kind. Our chiefs are supportive of the efforts by the “visitors” to better their lives as they seek refuge in our area.

  3. This brings a tear to my eye. This is so sad. Some of us who have seen the devastation of war in the Congo and know the kind of horrors that are perpetrated on women, children and even men by waring factions can only empathise with why this poor women took her life. Let us have a heart for our fellow African. Why persecuting our own brothers and sisters?Where was the UN’s IOM and where was the AU? Cry the beloved continent, your children continue to fail their own kin.

  4. People this should come to in end why should we live like animals Zambia and Congo we are just one family. This is not good.

  5. Being a former refugee public health Nurse this kind of sad development drives me mad. If the woman was in Europe Refugee Camp the only issue Wil conclude is that” the refugees are here because of reliable social welfare support. So what do we say about the poor woman who was living in poverty, in addition in the village that has seen poverty in all angles.

IT’S ABOUT PEACEFUL ENVIRONMENT SETTINGS. HOW DO YOU DARE GO BACK TO COUNTRY WERE YR OWN MUM WAS RAPED AND U HAD TO WATCH IT WITH YR OWN EYES…

I DON’T SUPPORT ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS BUT PLEASE LET’S GUIDE THE BLEEDING HEARTS ON HOW TO MAKE PROPER IMMIGRATION PAPER WORK.

IF GIVEN CHANCE, AM READY TO VOLUNTEER FOR SUCH WORK AND SHARE MY EXPERIENCE DESPITE OF THE LOCATION. SAFETY IS A BASIC RIGHT FOR EVERY HUMAN BEING.

    • This is the evil of corruption. If it wasn’t for this corrupt immigration officer going to hunt for this innocent woman, she should have been alive by now.
