A development activist in Mufumbwe district has called for capacity building of ward development committees (WDC) if rural places are to see meaningful development.

ZANIS reports that Michael Akufuna, who is also programme coordinator for Mufumbwe Caring Mothers, a non-governmental organization, said there is need for government and stakeholders to build the capacity of WDCs so that they can be effective in their contributions towards the bottom-up approach as desired by government.

Mr. Akufuna explained in an interview yesterday that in addition to funds, there are a lot of things most of the WDCs need to be empowered with such as basics in project planning, monitoring and implementation.

“ The WDCs are closest to community members hence they have better chances of understanding developmental needs in their areas, “ he said.

Mr. Akufuna however, commended government for its commitment to the bottom-up approach to development as it offers an opportunity for community members to choose projects which urgently need attention.

He was speaking yesterday during a stakeholders meeting for submission of recommendations for a local government policy in Mufumbwe district of North western province.
